I agree whole heartedly that they are doing better ... and I have heard similar stuff being done with GWS AFL team.
However (there's always a but), we'll see their level of commitment 10, 20, 30 years on .... it would be a piece of piss to pour money hand over fist into marketing (via memberships etc) in the early establishment days. Hell if we started the Parramatta Eels up today they'd probably put 1000x more effort into it all.
Obviously the club need to lift their game - but its a bit apples and oranges to compare to a start up.
I agree that being a start up club might mean that members are likely to jump on board but it's not as simple as it sounds. The Wanderers are running on a shoe string budget, not having the tens of millions of dollars thrown at them like GWS from a bottomless money pit that is the AFL.
The Wanderers home crowds have already surpassed GWS whole first season, and they still have 4 home games to go, including another garanteed sellout against Sydney FC. If you take away GWS's first home game at Homebush, when there were probably 30 000 Swans fans there out of 38 000, the Wanderers crowd stats look even better.
Thye are also only about 700 below the Eels 2012 average at Parra Stadium.
All I'm saying is that the Wanderers have worked terribly hard in engaging the fans from the outset. They let the fans choose the name of the team, the colours and the home ground. They also listened to the fans when complaints were made about the song that was played when they scored a goal. They quickly dumped it. They work hard with their active support group at the north end (yes, the flare chuckers) and assist them in any way possible to make the game day experience as enjoyable as possible for ALL demographic of fans. The Mariners major sponsor has jumped ship and is almost certain to link up with the Wanderers for next season. It's Primo Smallgoods, and their boss is on the Board of the Wanderers. The guy is worth about $400 million.
All this has been done in 9 months.
They are just doing things very well. As MITS pointed out, they are also winning, which helps, but it is about more than that. It is about everything Bongo has been campaigning for - FANS FIRST.
I know he has been to a game and shared a game day experience with the RBB. I'd be interested to hear his views.
