Let's be honest, the pokies were financing league for so long that they didn't really need to bother worrying about whether or not people turned up to the games.

League clubs in general have only been serious about the membership thing for the last 5 or so years.

I agree whole heartedly that they are doing better ... and I have heard similar stuff being done with GWS AFL team.

However (there's always a but), we'll see their level of commitment 10, 20, 30 years on .... it would be a piece of piss to pour money hand over fist into marketing (via memberships etc) in the early establishment days. Hell if we started the Parramatta Eels up today they'd probably put 1000x more effort into it all.

Obviously the club need to lift their game - but its a bit apples and oranges to compare to a start up.

I agree that being a start up club might mean that members are likely to jump on board but it's not as simple as it sounds. The Wanderers are running on a shoe string budget, not having the tens of millions of dollars thrown at them like GWS from a bottomless money pit that is the AFL.
The Wanderers home crowds have already surpassed GWS whole first season, and they still have 4 home games to go, including another garanteed sellout against Sydney FC. If you take away GWS's first home game at Homebush, when there were probably 30 000 Swans fans there out of 38 000, the Wanderers crowd stats look even better.
Thye are also only about 700 below the Eels 2012 average at Parra Stadium.

All I'm saying is that the Wanderers have worked terribly hard in engaging the fans from the outset. They let the fans choose the name of the team, the colours and the home ground. They also listened to the fans when complaints were made about the song that was played when they scored a goal. They quickly dumped it. They work hard with their active support group at the north end (yes, the flare chuckers) and assist them in any way possible to make the game day experience as enjoyable as possible for ALL demographic of fans. The Mariners major sponsor has jumped ship and is almost certain to link up with the Wanderers for next season. It's Primo Smallgoods, and their boss is on the Board of the Wanderers. The guy is worth about $400 million.

All this has been done in 9 months.
They are just doing things very well. As MITS pointed out, they are also winning, which helps, but it is about more than that. It is about everything Bongo has been campaigning for - FANS FIRST.
I know he has been to a game and shared a game day experience with the RBB. I'd be interested to hear his views.

I do agree - they are doing a very good job .... and its not just about winning

ffs I even considered going to a couple of games over xmas - but it was too hot and I didn't want to get sunburnt when I took off my shirt like all the other mad merkins on the north hill

(actually it was sold out on the north and I didn't wanna pay $25+ to watch a game of soccer - lol)

If you do decide to go to a game, I'd sit on the sides at the north end of the concourse or stand on either side. That way you get to hear the best. I haven't sat with the mad merkins at the north end yet, although I will when I don't have Jumsuit with me.

Sounds nuts - but I would give every one of those North Hill lunatics a ticket to an Eels match - same seats - all at the first home game. Ask them to dress in Blue and gold and do the same thing for Parra that they do for the Wanderers - um minus the flares !!!

It might start something...........

Most of them live in western Sydney.
Funny that.

I would never change my team no matter where I live. But that's just the type of guy I am. I have no time for dirty turncoats. It good all the dirty stinking turncoats can congregate together.

They sure are passionate. Better than the boring merkins who currently attend Eels games.

I understand that.
If the only team that you ever had to support was the Roosters, and the Eels started a team, I'd be quite happy that you kept supporting the Roosters.
I'd support the Eels.
