Thanks guys, yep already had a response from the physc which is good just trying to lock a time in. Its weird though as I somehow how have rationalised ignoring it or pushing it back for ages and I have a new, more senior leadership role at work where I found myself talking about the importance of feeling good in yourself and realised I wasn't role modelling what I was preaching. So here we are...

I am confident it will really help, many people go through it from time to time but I don't get to be the person I want to be when it comes on and that's not OK.

Thanks for the support and will keep you posted.

Just posting this for information, and awareness that whatever someone is going through is likely a shared experience, and others have trod a similar path.

The article/headline implies it's surprising that 35-49yo is the age group with highest loneliness among men, but it doesn't really surprise me at all?

Hey Team,

Thought I’d share… For some reason my anxiety and panic is off the hook at the moment so I’ve been to the GP, been totally honest about it and gotten on a mental health plan.

I’ve had random anxiety and panic as long as I can remember, I just emailed a local psychologist who specialises in this so hopefully I can get in this week. It’s really effecting me at work at certain times and I’m fed up with dealing with it.

Anyway, just thought I’d share and will report back how the process goes as it may encourage someone else to take action. Really hoping I get relief.
For what it's worth, I have suffered anxiety my entire life. I'm now 67 and 3months ago I finally decided to see a psychologist about it. It's helping in a lot of ways. I think just normalising the whole thing rather than just keeping it my own dark personal secret, has helped enormously too.
Cheers, mate.

I was helping my son on Monday public holiday
With small renovations.
He had an accident and chopped off 4 fingers.
I spent 40 minutes searching for one of them while he was treated by the ambulance paramedics.
Terrible sight
I was trying to remember and administer first aid.
He had two reattached. Hopefully they take ok.
Lost his index finger which the surgeon said is not needed and the 1st joint of his little finger.
I'm arranging to talk to a physiologist as I'm having flash backs.
Thought I'd tell you guys to get it of my chest.
Geez, I can only imagine how hard this is for you. I have a son who's 25, and I just imagined that happening to him, and searching for one of his fingers in the midst of it all. That would be so traumatising
Not unusual for the witness to an accident to be more affected than the victim; particularly when its your own son. Good to see you're going to a psychologist. My thoughts are with you mate. Thanks for sharing, and keep us posted on the progress of both you and your son.

I seen a psychologist and she said there is no need to return unless I want to.
I think talking about what happened on here and with friends definitely helped before attending the session.
My son returned to work 3 weeks after his accident. He has been out to see clients and planning upcoming work.
His surgeon is very happy with the amount of movement he has so early after the surgery.
He said one of his better results at the moment.

Thanks mate. It’s amazing how many men just seem to live with it. I’m not trying to erase it as that’s unrealistic for me, but I think understanding it better and learning ways to lessen its impact.

Well said Stevie. You’ve got to learn how to be in charge of it, not the other way round, so to speak.

That's really good step to take and good to hear it's been worthwhile.

I reckon a lot of us blokes of a certain age think we're built to suffer things in silence, but it really helps to chat to someone (GP, psych, friends or other blokes, randoms on here) and realise things we keep to ourself and worry about are pretty normal and better shared.

Absolutely. If our aim is to erase these things completely, we are in for a very rough ride, because it generally isn't possible. But having realistic plans and aims for managing anxiety, etc, is definitely the way to go. Because that is 100% achievable.

This is a rant, also a thing that has been troubling me since Monday and fits squarely into the mental health sector.

I was at the Drs Monday morning. The medical centre I go to my son goes to as well. They charge me and they dont charge him (bulk bill) because he's a student. So essentially they use their discretion when they charge ir don't.

So Monday I'm waiting on the bench and in comes a homeless guy. No shoes and unwashed. Looks mid 60's. He asks reception if he can see a Dr. She snaps it will be $80. He says he doesn't have any money. She remains silent.

Yes, there could be a back story, but what happened to "how about you come back at 5? What's your name ? Have you eaten today ?"

I could see how deflated he was. I could sense his feeling of hopelessness. He was brave enough to seek help, yet was shooed away like a stray. <sad face>

Did you pay it for him?

No and I mentioned that with my fam over dinner. I am usually proactive with things like this and dropped the ball this time. I think I am harbouring some guilt about the whole thing.
I have worked with homeless men in the past. Accessing the health system is a real hard thing, especially once you need specialist care, and if you are in a regional area, good luck.

Sorry if my question triggered any further guilt mate, it wasn't my intent.
Like you, my goto is normally to dig into my pocket and help someone out if I feel the circumstances warrant it.
Not sure I would have gone as far as paying the $80 consult fee, however in this case I probably would have had a chat to the clinic about why they couldn't help this guy.

Don't beat yourself up too much, you don't know the individual's circumstances.
If you want to assuage yourself of any guilt, feel free to PM me and I will give you a link to donate to the sleepout I am doing soon for homelessness. ;)

I was invited to a sleepout for the homeless end of last year. When I looked under the hood, there were food trucks and bad weather maybes or maybe nots. Thanks but no thanks. From what I have seen the CEO sleepout is a tad more genuine in its message.

BTW I am part of the vollie crew for Long Walk Home. It's a big event for the Wayside Chapel.

This will be my 4th year at Bella Vista Farm as part of The Hills Winter Sleepout.
Unlike the one you were invited to, ours is held in the middle of winter with temps probably down as low as 2-3 degrees celcius. :(

BBQ supplied and managed by Rotary for sanga sandwiches for dinner and bacon and egg rolls for breakfast (at a cost) and a coffee cart supplied by a local charity. We get a couple of speakers from "The Big Issue" team and from the 2 or 3 local charities that get all the money that is raised.

I have progressed from cardboard bed under the stars to cardboard bed in a little 2-man tent but that only keeps the rain and dew off me, not the cold.

Beside this post on my screen is an add for Lizard Island. I did a day trip there on my homeymoon 26 years ago so I though I would take a look. Cheapest rooms were 2000 + per night. I suppose the bed is a bit better than a cardboard box.
