Former NSW player Braith Anasta has given Nathan Cleary a sobering reality check, saying he will never reach the heights of Mitchell Pearce in terms of what he can do on a rugby league field.
Anasta believes Pearce must be picked ahead of Nathan Cleary because he has a higher skill-set to succeed at the highest level.
“Mitchell Pearce debuted with me at the Roosters and I’ve watched him evolve as a player and this is no disrespect to Nathan, but Mitchell Pearce has levels of his game that Nathan Cleary will never reach,” Anasta told NRL Tonight.
“Nathan will be a great first grader for a long period of time, but Mitchell Pearce has the ability to be up there with the best when he is at his best.
“He has got so much fire power with his passing and his kicking game.
“I just think he has a level that Nathan Cleary will never get to.”
Cleary has come under criticism for failing to come up with any try assists or linebreak assists in his four Origin games to date.
Pearce is in arguably the form of his career after six straight man-of-the-match performances for Newcastle and Anasta thinks the time is right to give him another chance in the Blues No.7 hot seat.
“Cleary is a great player and I respect him, but Mitchell Pearce just has to be there for game two in my opinion,” Anasta said.
“He has struggled in the past but behind an underperforming forward pack and side.
“He has copped a lot of unnecessary criticism. I watched it. I witnessed it.
“If there is any time to put Mitchell Pearce in this Origin side it is right now because he is ready.”
The NSW team for game two will be announced on Sunday.
