Might sound too restrictive but maybe the guideline might be as simple as whats recognised as reaching a national audience.

How so?

Did Dally Messenger and the gang play if before every club match and if so, why hasn't it been a 'tradition' for the past 100 seasons?

If it's justified, you're saying we should play it before every club game this season and be gone with it next season up until the game's 200th season? :?
Maybe Dally got it wrong.

Great thread. Mixed feelings. I don't rate our anthem, I am a staunch republican and I think the national anthem should be reserved for matches of national importance (SOO and Tests, I guess). BUT, as much as I despise it, our national anthem still raises hairs on the back of my neck and we're in a garrison city and I love nothing better than the army marching on with the flag and rising for the anthem before every home game.

Geez I go wild when some f*cker butchers it with his interpretation!

And for the idiot bagging Beave, I've met the guy FOP and the national pride just oozes out of him. If you want to take him on, bring some mates, because I'll be standing beside him and you're gonna need 'em.

it's not like it's every verse that's being played just the first one, there's about 5 verses of the antheme but traditionally only the first 1 is sung but at special occassion it's sometimes extended to the second verse. The Anthem has actually changed from the original version of it, the version we sing now is more PC.

Rightly so, the views are split, because I think not everyone wanna have National Anthem before club games, rather play the National Anthem prior to important and special occasions. So my view is Heritage Round is fine, SOO sure, Finals Series no worries too, definitely Test Matches and that's about it. That way we do not under play or overplay the National Anthem and preserve its importance.

If it is decided to play the Anthem however, people should show respect, whether you are Australian or not, it doesnt kill someone to stand up for a minute surely. If you dont wanna stand, fine, just dont talk during the National Anthem or something.

Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We've golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in Nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history's page, let every stage
Advance Australia fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing,
"Advance Australia fair!"

When gallant Cook from Albion sail'd,
To trace wide oceans o'er,
True British courage bore him on,
Till he landed on our shore.
Then here he raised Old England's flag,
The standard of the brave;
With all her faults we love her still,
"Brittannia rules the wave!"
In joyful strains then let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"

Beneath our radiant southern Cross,
We'll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"

While other nations of the globe
Behold us from afar,
We'll rise to high renown and shine
Like our glorious southern star;
From England, Scotia, Erin's Isle,
Who come our lot to share,
Let all combine with heart and hand
To advance Australia fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"

Shou'd foreign foe e'er sight our coast,
Or dare a foot to land,
We'll rouse to arms like sires of yore
To guard our native strand;
Brittannia then shall surely know,
Beyond wide ocean's roll,
Her sons in fair Australia's land
Still keep a British soul.
In joyful strains the let us sing
"Advance Australia fair!"

The full version is a disgrace. Slopes, Mediterranean Descendants and Arabs need not apply. And as for chicks...or the locals...

In 2000, I was at Gallipoli and I heard about some Turks that were up the back talking and laughing during our national anthem. The version I heard was that they clammed up when some very big Kiwis turned around and told them to pull their heads in.

I know and that's not even the one from 1879 the lyrics for that one is as follows

In joyful strains then let us sing
Advance Australia Fair.
When other nations of the globe.
Behold us from afar,
We'll rise to high renown
And shine like our glorious southern star
From English soil and Fatherland
Scotia and Erin fair
Let all combine with heart and hand
To Advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing
Advance Australia Fair.
Should foreign foe e'er sight our coast.
Or dare a foot to land.
We'll rouse to arms like sires of yore
To guard our native strand.
Britannia then shall surely know,
Though oceans roll between
Her sons in fair Australia's land
Still keep their courage green.
In joyful strains then let us sing
Advance Australia Fair.

nice one Kiwis, I bet the Aussies present were respectful during the Turkish anthem.

Where's the 'don't care either way' option?

I mean i don't care if they have it at the normal footy. But if it was on i will stand up and respect the national anthem.
