The thing is mate, all they say is " trending up" which literally means anything. It could be trending up since the opening of the season, trending up since covid...
If it was clearly doing well, we'd have the figures to judge for ourselves. Heck the journalists didn't get the figures.
We don't take opinion pieces here mate.

Trending up "year on year"... multiple years... its not that hard.

And what "you take" means nothing. What you believe means less than nothing. The only place that the journalists will have got their figures from is SkyTV. And SkyTV don't care what you believe, if they say figuresa ar heading up, they will continue to pay for the product. Of course in this instance Super Rugby is almost irrelevant to why SkyTV pays NZR for. They will pay for the 13- 15 Test matches that the All Blacks play each year, the World Cup every four years, the Lions every 12, The new nations cup every two years... The fact you think Super Rugby will have any real impact on NZR shows just how little you really know.

They've already tried the Sunwolves which was a financial disaster.

Super Rugby will hang on by the skin of it teeth as long as there are old boys willing to over pay for the TV rights.
If they'd only tried the ferocious Autumn Aardvarks the Super mob would have been on a winner.

Nobody would question it if it was a good product and attended well...

And "questioning" it means nothing.

In the end, the ONLY people who matter where ratings are concerned are SkyTV. Who also happen to be the only place the viewing numbers could have come from.

Whether you or your circle jerk believe them is irrelevant, they are what they are and will guide Sky in their next bid. You can choose to believe what you like, but it means nothing.

That's also totally irrelevant from my suggestion that a national competition is Australian RU's only hope of turning things around for the sport in the long term...
Yeh a competition of five teams which they don’t even have the players for will be a massive success

they can have a top five finals system too

Anyone thinking australia could ever sustain its own professional union competition is delusional to the sport in Australia
I don't like union and I certainly don't like the people who follow it, but Union in Aus could go pro if they used the club teams like every other sport on the planet has. The clubs and suburbs are known. But hey, I'm a lowly Mun go, wtf would I know.

I’d never say “never” without a crystal ball. I remember in the early 90s League people were talking about taking over Union. By the early 2000s Union was booming and League was still struggling with the fallout from the SL war and my north shore Toff boss was talking about how he wished League wild hurry up and die. Neither happened. Currently League is booming and union is struggling, but things can turn around especially if unforeseen things happen.
