You seem to be new, so not sure if you're a troll/teenager like the others so will engage with you until there is evidence of that.

League was on a high in 1995. The Winfield Cup had basically saved Sky as it gave sport all weekend to watch and had been running for a few years. There was one game of rugby televised a week back then. Most Kiwi kids (rugby fans too) supported a team (mostly Manly and Canberra I think) and SOO was hugely popular.

I was at uni in Hamilton during the early years of the Warriors, we went up to Auckland for nearly every home game, all dual code fans.

Sadly a new team wont generate that hype now. Which doesn't mean I don't want a new team, I want a team to support other than clusterfudge that is the Oz journeyman collecting Warriors.
Im not that new, but im not here to argue the validity of expansion wherever they might want to expand to, im all for it... if they ever go NZ2 and its in Dunedin (not that'll happen) i won't be shutting it down... not after we have teams like the cowboys, which most comps wouldn't bother having a townsville based team, let alone a redcliffe or cronulla, having two teams in one city creates a healthy rivalry, and pits them against each other for sponsors, players and memberships, the problem with all the experts on media forums, is they expect a quick fix, that everything must be a hit asap, or it will fail... only have to look at the dolphins and the circus built around their poor recruitment or jersey design.. anything to make them fail

I meant new to this discussion we're having about league in NZ, not the forum in general etc.

You may be new to the nrl but guess what ?

league is on a high right now

it’s never been this strong

and it’s happening at a time when union in the pacific has never been as weak in the professional era

this stuff isn’t rocket science

No excuse to posting random stadia sites
Hamilton should get a game or two so should Wellington but sure if it’s just a South Island team that’s different

I doubt the South Island could sustain is team on it’s own

I think if Christchurch was the base then i think it could like i said, NRL has the cowboys... anything is possible

That’s where nrl clubs should spend their money is getting the best kiwi juniors into our systems rather than paying overs for an ageing all black

they really should bring back the old under 20s that was great for getting kiwi kids
Absolutely but pinching 1 or 2 would be a golden marketing tool for a new franchise.

Yeh

they need to be outside the cap and I think a few clubs would do it especially the warriors

not sure how much value an all black would be too a decent Aussie side though

they aren’t going to be stand out players in the nrl

Yeh their new stadium is excellent

dunedin and Hamilton have great grounds too

Wellingtons is unsuitable but it’s the capital so should get a few games

This upcoming Super Rugby season will be a flop, it'll be the lowest attendances and TV ratings in thier history. The new teams will struggle and thier viability will come into question. Super rugby stagnates for a decade before being abandoned and reverting to respective national semi professional comps respectively, with the best talent being snapped up by France , Japan and NRL.

Warriors on the up next year with a few good signings and a new coach sign RTS and make the finals.

Southern Orcas will be the 18th team.
They'll be playing out of Wellington and a couple of games at Christchurch.
They'll go after at least 1 All Black.
An All black or 2 might even express an interest ahead of time.

Orcas v Warriors becomes the overwhelming most watched professional club Rugby game in NZ.
New Zealanders are divided into either Warriors and Orcas akin to Blues and Maroons.

I'm just about to board my plane to the US and travel the America's for the next 6 weeks.
I probably won't be posting much but I wish you all thee very best!
Merry Christmas everyone!
And happy new year!

This discussion (if you can even call it that) is fascinating in that one side of the argument massively overestimates the potential of a second side in NZ, and the other side underestimates it.

I agree 100%.

it would potentially be the biggest missed open goal if the NRL didn’t add NZ2 to their competition in either the South Island or a standalone Christchurch team or a Wellington based team.

To put it in historical geopolitical equivalence terms it’s like the end of the Cold War with the NRL being the US and NZRU being the USSR.

Take advantage while the other side is weak and you are strong.
