NYC had a big impact on local players in NZ

Salary Cap increases will be another big impact

NZ playing community follows the money

Its one reason why the Warriors are happy to play in the NSWRL comps with the RG U21 and now U19 teams

But can NZ generate money locally is one of the big questions

Let’s be honest the warriors since 95 have mainly been a rabble

despite mainly poor on field performance their long term crowd average is very good (and mt smart isn’t a great ground)

whenever the warriors make the finals their tv ratings are on par with all blacks test matches

so it seems there is a huge demand from the nz public for club rugby league

and given how many of the players comes from kiwi or Polynesian backgrounds it’s obviously a game made for them

the problem has always been despite the talent, kiwi players struggle with the intensity of an 80 minute game and don’t know how to grind out games against Aussie sides

but the Auckland / nz warriors have been a massive success for rugby league in general and the game in Australia particularly

putting a team from Auckland into an Australian competition was a bold and visionary step

a second nz nrl side is just doing the job Albert Baskerville would’ve done in 1909 if he hasn’t died from catching the flu playing for the all golds in Australia

The Warriors have had rubbish coaches for most of their existence. Cleary was good and took them to a grand final. Daniel Anderson had some fleeting success. Can't think of a single other good coach they have had? Kearney, Elliot, Brown, McFaddan, Kemp - all crap. They should have done everything in their power to keep Todd Payten. Club seems to settle for mediocrity...

They used to produce players like Stacey jones and pretty much the whole team he played with were freaks eg lauititi or palessina were freaks

So Wayne bennett is after some guy called Shaun Stevenson whose in all blacks contention

after the next union World Cup we could be seeing a lot of these boys attracted to the wages and the challenge it would provide

Apparently Stevenson is something like 3rd or 4th choice for the AB’s so if he doesn’t crack the AB’s World Cup squad I already think he’s on record of saying he sign for the dolphins or another NRL side.

Still gets you nowhere without good coaching. People love to hate on Shaun Johnson but he made a GF in his one year under Cleary and had plenty of success as Kiwis half. Should’ve had way more but he spent the bulk of his career being coached by a parade of spuds

They were stupid letting him go to Cronulla

Yeah sure a second NRL team will affect the All Blacks. When one can command 2 mil a year for three years in Japan.

"He only began to regularly nail the starting No 10 jersey in 2022 – five years after his debut – but no-one could begrudge him a deal that could reportedly reap up to $2 million a year."

Why would any rugby player want to bash their body, limiting their earning years, playing in the NRL instead of playing for the All Blacks then towards the end of their careers cash in?

At the time the discussions with Bennett happened Stevenson had just missed out on the ABs XV (which is the NZ B team), but he got called in as an injury replacement and played really well. Sadly I don't think the selectors rate him as high as the public do.

Oh well let’s see how he goes at the dolphins then they have spots available In their roster and they won’t have to pay massive money for him

So what? Are you that insecure that you need to follow a "tough" sport? That's pathetic. A sport doesn't need to be the "toughest" to be enjoyable to watch or play.

It is also irrelevant. what is relevant is that a young rugby player sees more earning potential, for a longer time, playing Rugby rather than League.

It’s good for you to admit where league is better than union

the wages in union are going down meanwhile the nrl salary cap just keeps going up and up and up

You really are that insecure, you think "tougher" equals "better". I pity any women in your life.

Clearly a 2 million dollar a year payday clearly shows you're dribbling, Rugby paydays are getting better for the best.

The problem with union is it’s down to a few rich owners in France who are paying overs from their own funds putting in millions of euros a year from their own pockets to pay those wages

England tried to compete and two clubs have already gone broke

nrl salary cap is covered by 120 percent of the grant paid for by the game

but hey I’m happy union is spending money it doesn’t have then having to sell of itself to private equity

lmao

unions failure to build strong club competitions is a major problem for the sport

obviously league is tougher that’s why I’ve said not a lot of union players can actually excel in the nrl just from a toughness and the speed of the game (we’ll leave out the skill required for a later argument )

RL can only hope to carve out a strong niche in NZ. That should be its aim. The two codes need to work together to survive. There's going to be fewer people playing both games over the next few decades due to CTE.

Hey numbnuts, the 2 million a year was for a team in Japan. Not France. I swear you are actually getting dumber.

I wonder what you are going to do to measure your failing masculinity when they continue to remove the "toughness" from League, no "biff", no shoulder charges, sin bin for throwing a punch. And it will continue to remove the "toughness" the more junior numbers decrease.
It must be a worry to you that the NRL has already stated they don't have enough players for expansion and need NZs juniors, without even realising there aren't many of them.
