Idiot call.... there is no number or no currency value on NRL licences... you don't need to cut of you're nose to get a boob job.... you make the competition stronger by expanding, not detracting and adding...
You'll never see the NRL ever go down the path set by the SLwar again, it was a nessesary evil back then as the game couldn't sustain 22 clubs, but nowadays, with sponsorships and broadcaster money, The league is more streamlined than ever..
We could expand to 24 teams if we wanted to.
Trouble is the player depth needs to grow first, you can't hope to plonk teams in Adelaide and Perth without a spare extra 60 grade players.. its why NZ and PNG are so important....
The blokes an idiot. It’s not going to happen and neither it should. The market will eventually eke out unsustainable clubs if there are any. In the meantime expand to new markets with clubs that force stragglers to thrive or die.

All clubs will stay viable nowadays, besides why dump a brand the NRL promotes heavily even if they are perennial losers... look at the tigers... they boast a whole heap of supporters and juniors, are we seriously going to lose that brand, then hope the giants of greater western canberra gain support off the back off it... no way.. licenses cost nothing.. theres no need to delete or remove anyone when it cost nothing to keep them around... its insular thinking that the game cant grow beyond 20 teams

Very true and what isn't thought of is that the game once was in such a poor state that teams were forced into mergers.
The game’s current state.. why aren't we considering de-mergers ?
Illawarra Steelers , Balmain Tigers, Western Suburbs Magpies and St George Dragons.
All of the brands offer authenticity, history and couture far greater than the watered down versions we have as merged entities.

Exactly. Just expand the competition and the market (sorry if I sound a little like Ayn Rand when I say the ‘’market’) will determine whether or not any club is viable or not.

It would be sort of negligence not to be at least viable when the ARLC gives so much money in grants nowadays.

I wouldn’t call Penrith or Brookie 21st century either and the Sharks are still hampered by reduced capacity due to the 21st century works taking place around the stadium and Tigers actually do alright at LO.

Not that the state of a club’s stadium should be the one and only decision to relocate two clubs which would each have over 150,000 fans.

Speaking of 21st century, relocating or dropping solvent clubs must be the most ridiculous idea of the 21st century.
West Tigers are a basket case of a club both on and off the field and have been for years.

cronulla can’t be taken seriously as a club with a restricted capacity of around 12-13k in today’s game.

Wests have a long sustained position at the bottom of the table in their future. I fear they could slowly wither way.

They struggle to recruit marquee players and retain juniors. That makes it hard for them to move up the ladder. The Magpies side of the merger will not be content until it takes full control of the club.

They also have 3 “home” grounds which is ridiculous of which 2 aren’t fit for purpose.

The game is holding itself back by allowing the Tigers to continue as a splintered merged entity. Either give the licence to the Magpies and rebrand as Western Sydney Magpies or hand it to the Brisbane Tigers.

Hilarious, you expect other cities to adopt failed Sydney brands because it’s good for Sydney but cant see that in a world of finite resources, despite mugab’s argument, that reducing an over saturated market to create clear space for new growth could be a good thing.
