Graham is our greatest player, his involvement with the Warriors as a coach was terrible though so hopefully he's just suggesting things and has no involvement with the Bears in NZ.

I’m assuming it’s just an opinion piece saying Bears should partner with Christchurch/South Island.

Having the same colours as Crusaders is counterproductive and could put off potential supporters outside of Canterbury. They could play more on the white which Crusaders don’t seem to use judging by google images.

They’d still have to loosen their “non-negotiables” for it to be an OK idea. 1 game in Sydney at the very most and if they do that they should never be home team at Magic. NZ teams played enough home games in Australia during covid to last us all a lifetime.

I think if a Christchurch-based team entered the NRL, the only way they could "sell" a red & black brand outside the Canterbury province is to team up with Norths. If they go it alone in those colours, it'll be tougher for them.

More likely they use some combo that can distinguish them from the Crusaders.

North Queensland are a great example of why a second nz team based in Christchurch works.
Townsville is much smaller than Christchurch but represents a larger geographical area for support.

Christchurch will pull 15 to 20k weekly even without success and the south Island is over 1 million people that that team will represent.

And for context... I'm currently in Christchurch.

Not really, 1. NQ is RL heartland, Christchurch is rugby union heartland. 2. NQ struggled for years, we’re bailed out by news ltd and reliant on a pokie den until relatively recent times.

maybe, maybe not. Like any club will depend on success to some degree, look at the warriors hugely variable crowds for years, but the fact remains at the moment there is no one putting their hand up to own and back a team in Christchurch.

as for the one million on South Island, how many of them live within 45 minutes of the stadium as that’s the real catchment for an active fanbase.

I think a team in South Island would attract more NZ kids to league.

Currently if your a talented 18 yr old you have the options of

A) play rugby in the domestic comp, play professionally for any of the 5 super rugby clubs, hopefully one day play for the All Blacks.

Or

B) play league, move away from your family and friends to play in the 1 team in Aukland or Australia

The choice is pretty easy for all the top talent in the south island.

1: Just about everyone here watches league and will just on a team if they had one.
2: at last count the immediate geographical area ( 45 minutes)
Is around 400k - triple NQ
