New Zealand 2 will deal a massive blow to NZ rugby

Not really, 1. NQ is RL heartland, Christchurch is rugby union heartland. 2. NQ struggled for years, we’re bailed out by news ltd and reliant on a pokie den until relatively recent times.

maybe, maybe not. Like any club will depend on success to some degree, look at the warriors hugely variable crowds for years, but the fact remains at the moment there is no one putting their hand up to own and back a team in Christchurch.

as for the one million on South Island, how many of them live within 45 minutes of the stadium as that’s the real catchment for an active fanbase.
Cowboys fans travel hours to get to games lmao 45 minutes

And Sydney people won’t travel three suburbs lmao. The reality is 90% of a crowd is made up of people who live within easy travel of the stadium.

on the bears as long as they used a large chunk of white to differentiate from the ruggers mob it’d go ok.

1: Just about everyone here watches league and will just on a team if they had one.
2: at last count the immediate geographical area ( 45 minutes)
Is around 400k - triple NQ

And you and your active fanbase nonsense again.. people watch = fan.
Do they? the avg viewing on skynz for nrl games is 50k allegedly. There’s more clubs in WA than in the Christchurch region.

that’s good, now just need to convince the rugger fans to change allegiances And find a multi millionaire to own it.

im for nz2 but Wellington seems a more commercially sound choice than Christchurch maybe?

The Warriors have ignited a Rugby league fire in nz. We need to capitalize.
Christchurch will have a brand new purpose built stadium that puts them in the box seat and also is genuine expansion.

Sure because you’ve been to both and compared traffic densities and population densities ?
Actually I have lol. Sydney nearly every month and had the great pleasure of going to south island and driving around a few years ago. I’m not seeing many do the 4.5hr drive from Dunedin to Christchurch to get to a Friday night game!

Why do you pick the most extreme examples to make a bad point

Sunday midday for Australia is a tineslot the warriors used to own

im pretty certain team 20 will be nz2 and it will be split between christchurch and Wellington

Because the 6pm Friday slot is one of the big reasons people have been calling for a second nz team!

agreed, I think they’ll be called “the” somethings based in Wellington with 2-3 games in Christchurch. Just hope it’s a genuine relationship though and not cash grab like the dolphins on Sunshine Coast.

You know there will be TWO nz teams

Friday 6 pm won’t be filled solely by them

Friday 6 pm for Wellington games won’t be an issue

Incorrect, team 20 is Perf, and NZ2 wouldbe better suited in waikato. Not the south Island, in future maybe, but Auckland is the hotspot, and the major population centre, if you're thinking of emulating the dolphins V SEQ idea, then you base them on the outskirts of that area, Waikato/Hamilton fits that mould. Its geographical central enough to travel from Bay of Plenty, and Auckland, if you think of population of all those areas combined, its a great big chunk of it, yes it might take away from the warriors but its an already established RL city, its like giving an option to those people in Brisbane who didn't follow league or just hated the bronx

Waikato district, has 514k already, add to that Bay of Plenty region another 347k, plus 1.6million from Auckland itself, which to grotd potato question about waiting for another million population centre (which is unnessesary, when these 3 areas span 54% of the countrys populous)
Basically all up 2.5 million people in that upper north island, which 2 teams could easily service, and a local derby can ensure... then if if all goes well expand to South island or Wellington or both

North Queensland are a great example of why a second nz team based in Christchurch works.
Townsville is much smaller than Christchurch but represents a larger geographical area for support.

Christchurch will pull 15 to 20k weekly even without success and the south Island is over 1 million people that that team will represent.

And for context... I'm currently in Christchurch.
Just to be pedantic it’s currently at 1.2 million.

That’s kinda the conundrum with NZ2- you don’t really have a clear favourite for hosting a second club as all three have their pros and cons.

Hamilton/Waikato - by far the largest regional population, has a decent stadium. Close enough to Auckland that fans will travel in big numbers for derby games.
however had by far the smallest urban population and risks cannibalising the Warriors market the most.

Wellington - larger urban population, best potential for corporate support. Has substantial adjacent regional population. However stadium has restrictions with the number of night games it can host and already has two major tenants.

Christchurch - will have the best stadium as of 2025. Similar urban population to Wellington. Smallest regional population.

In terms of which region has the best existing player and support base that’s a good question but I’d guess Waikato due to the northern part of the region being a traditional league heartland. Plus it has a much larger Māori population and league has taken hold particularly well among Māori and Polynesian people.

Rugby league is followed like a religion in North Queensland.

Christchurch is rugby union country.

Terrible comparison.
