I too prefer Christchurch and for a few reasons: The south Island shits on the north, it's gorgeous and the people are nicer. It's population will probably start to ramp up because of the remarkable beauty and safety too. A Christchurch team will probably pull all of the South Island into following the NRL that a Wellington bid would likely still miss.
A brand new stadium! The NRL needs to get serious with this! If we want to make our comp epic, we need to improve the visual appearance and stop playing games at sub par facilities and the cake tin is just that.
North island vs South Island- epic!
Kiwis don't seem to be divided by the 2 Islands... but this would certainly change that! Lol

You’re not wrong. South Island is one of the most spectacular parts of the world.

Sheesh, you're in for a shock if a bunch of Cantab/Crusaders fans switch to league ...

Ok. Let's play this out:
The NRL says, the next team in the NRL will be from Christchurch and we are opening the bidding?
AKA who in Christchurch would like to own an Rugby league team in the greatest Rugby comp in the World? We will give you 17 million dollars a year and you can spend 12 of that on the best Rugby players you can find, you'll also be expected to showcase this team in a brand new purpose built stadium.
Then crickets... no business men are interested that...

Are you aware of just how stupid you are?
If you are looking at it from a purely business case point of view the numbers simply dont stack up for an investment group to buy an NRL club, especially in a high risk scenario like a new start up in a Rugby union stronghold. The returns are miniscule and the risk is great, especially for a start up with no track record of financial performance in a small non RL city.

The idea that you can just throw open for bids and there'll be a stampede of private investors opening the cheque books is fanciful at best. Look at Brisbane, not one independent financial bid came in despite it being by far a safer financial bet.

The Crusaders fans I met already watch NRL. Not hard to follow 2 especially when 1 only goes a few months and drops off half way through the year and even then only half the games are competitive lol

It won't be a switch but a slow migration, they'll be asked 1 day and think.. shit, when was the last game I watched? How are they doing anyway?
The slow migration has already started, probably not that slow but not a simple switch.

And that's how Perth Red told us he has no business experience at all.

If you think ALRC are just going to pick a city and ask for bids with no signs that there is a safe opportunity already there then youve got rocks in your head. This isnt the Aleague.
Im glad youre not in charge of investing my savings lol

You completed missed the point - check the bold. The problem with Canterbury/Crusaders is not the team/players/coaches, it's the fans.

wtf? Christchurch doesnt have a financially sound bid, yet.
Perth does (maybe)
PNG does if Australian taxpayers stump up silly money.

PNG or Perth are very unlikely to go to a public open bid process.
Cant see them doing it in Christchurch either, especially with no viable bids on the table already.
Keep shifting the goalposts

gobsmacked is spot on

when they want a nz bid they will deal directly with the nz governments of all levels and call for bids just like they are doing in Perth

reality is even nz2 will be stronger than Perth

Nz two

juniors tick
Stadium tick
Value to tv companies huge tick
Expand international comp tick
Derby game to help warriors tick
There's no area that tick all the boxes so emphatically than nz2.
On all logical metrics wins hands down.
I think the Sharks should or another Sydney team should be enticed to move to Perth, that would be a strong comp!
Perth by itself is a disaster on recruitment and pathways ( why PVL said" talk to the Bears" It he first mention of Perth, a relocation is WA best move and the comp as Sydney is too diluted.
Why don't the WA government offer an existing club a deal to relocate?
Or at least build a bloody stadium 🤦‍♂️

I'll be very surprised if they call for open bids in Perth and dont go with the the one the WA govt is backing, very very surprised. Christchurch needs a credible bid option before NRL will even consider the place, imo.

20 teams gives good content for tv fans in nsw and qld and uses Sunday 600 pm and Monday night football as new time slots

foxsports would drool for those time spots plus the ones they have now

which is why there needs to be a credible bid option. At the moment the only one to have surfaced is nothing like credible. NRL wont choose christchurch as an expansion city on the hope someone will come forward to own it.

Yes they will

like they’ve chosen Perth without any bids on the table

sigh, of course they have and of course there isnt. Theres at least one credible bid team and a WA govt supporting it.

Christchurch at this point has a group of local amateur clubs with no money. Unless there is a serious bid option come forward NRL wont look at it, in all likelihood.

There's only 1 team bid . 1 and that's Brisbane Easts.
There are none.
By your metric , we are staying at 17.
Unless they go to Brisbane again 🙄

End of 2024 - a year away.. they announce a location likely for 2027..
Why is there no bids ^^^
Ffs🤦‍♂️
