So it wasn’t a Sydney idea and the mayor of cairns is the one who opened the door lol

Remind me again where the majority of NRL admin and media who are driving this idea are based?

The mayor of Cairns has done f**k all except a couple of sound bites that the media has latched on to. All the actual PNG bid work is being done by the bid team which does not involve the Cairns mayor.

At least two commissioners are from qld

have you heard of Peter Beattie by chance

the original idea was it to be based in Northern Territory then the cairns mayor opened his mouth

anyway if you look at the history of rl expansion existing clubs were losing parts of their area to new clubs eg Penrith taking parra area, sharks taking dragons, dolphins taking Brisbane

The NT idea was never actually any more than an idea, same as Cairns/PNG until recently, and it wasn’t PNG’s idea.

Fair chance the PNG based in Cairns idea does happen now even though Sydney or Brisbane would make more sense for a FIFO team. PNG based in Cairns won’t really represent Cairns in any meaningful way or convert many Cowboys fans or sponsors.

Probably won’t but that’s not the point of it being based there

png have said themselves the goal is to be based in png after five years

Last time i looked Government was based in Canberra.

This is not China, Albo does not make decisions for the national interest on his own.

Its a Canberra/national idea.
You mean the leader of the dominant NSW faction of the ruling party?

Luckily for all of us, Albo isn't going to be around for much longer.

That doesn't matter, if PVL is the chairman running the game, whoever is PM next won't risk a few million on good will to a neighbouring country who we are trying to keep on our side, that diverted money is a pittance, that was always going to go to them regardless of whoever holds power, it just means it will be used for a greater purpose, the idea is to inspire the kids to not only stay in school but to want to aspire to become a 1st grade nrl player, cant do that if there isn't a pathway built, and yeah funding might fall over in a decade, but the important thing is the pathways get built, then find suitable sponsors to keep that pathway going, even if they are led to any of the other 17 teams, you guys who are close minded to the idea, are looking at the wrong aspects of the bid, and shitting in it any chance you get... it will inspire a country, as the matildas did with us, or the warriors did for nz this season, theres a lot of good rl can do

You've made the claim before that it's already announced aid that is being diverted. Can you provide evidence?

And how is money going to elite NRL players a "greater purpose" than helping to get people out of poverty?

Ffs I'd be embarrassed to support a bid that was taking money off people in a 3rd world country to fund a professional sporting team.

If this claim is correct that it's actually taking money out of the already promised funds, the bid is even worse.

A PNG team will help bring prosperity to more Papuans. It'll get more kids attending school to play the game. If they don't make it in football then they'll have an education to fall back on.

Because kids in Papua are more likely to attend school when it has a rugby league team in the curriculum. An NRL team from PNG will inspire more kids to turn up to school to try their hand at rugby league because it will provide better opportunities to live out their dream.

So the last 10 years hasn't helped it, so now we need to give them an NRL team and hope it works?

Did you read the article?

The Program aims to visit up to 80 primary schools and engage up to 50,000 participants over the three years in three regions (National Capital District, East New Britain Province and Eastern Highlands Province) of PNG. It also aims to develop the capacity of the PNGRFL to conduct development-through-sport programs.

Sure did. I also read this one where we were still doing it in 2021.

It hasn't done much for the last decade, but it will definitely work this time.
