The loss of mnf was a major disaster for the nrl

Dave smith thought he was smart cancelling it without telling foxtel

so they got him fired, stuck us with a worse time slot of Friday 6 pm and still offered a crap deal

There was even a proposal of 4 x 25 minute quarters way back

if they did that and it worked the tv rights would dwarf afl

I think Qtrs ruins the game given how momentum is in RL.

This is the 1st year we have a had a proper schedule for a few seasons.

NRL ran the trials this year. From the 18th Feb-Nov 15 there is content a few years of similar NRL can go into talks with more ammo them before

NZ are part of the comp.. Of course you exclude them in your rant.

Maybe it hasn't but certain things have changed in that time to make the game better and the improved ratings on Kayo are a by product of it.

Sometimes the exposure is better than the cash
Not excluding them in the overall picture, it is after all the only positive part of the new deal! But like I said if we are talking about how Australian Tv values NRL v AFL then we need to compare equally.

NRL needs to take its current $370mill Fox/Ch9 deal to around $420mill a year from 28- for it to show any decent growth after a decade of staying the same and with expansion genuinely being paid for. At the moment bringing in team 17 has COST the game around $16 mill a year due to Vlandys failure to secure a bigger deal for the extra content from Fox/Ch9.

I think the 6pm Sunday is the time to go to. still early enough to be over on a school night and causes less hassel with the draw
Yep Monday night throws all sorts of scheduling issues for turn around times and will be another blight on clubs being able to earn decent revenue from fans and corporates. Unless FTA is going to pay silly money its certain to be a Sunday 6pm slot.

Advertising makes little difference to Fox, only FTA. FTA are now the minor partner and getting smaller day by day, I wouldn't be changing the fabric of the game to pander to a dying medium.

Poor quality trolling

the nrl has a team in nz

it’s not their fault nobody wants an afl team outside Australia

your basically happy to compare 15 nrl clubs to 18 afl clubs

I'm comparing how Australian TV values NRL and AFL. Simple as that.

In '23 and '24 that values is $370mill v $476mill. That's a heck of a gap to close in the '28 deal, especially if they realize anything like the news reports for 25-. Would need us to add some serious value to the deal, or hopefully some genuine competitive tension for that to happen.

Lets compare the 2.

10 years ago. AFL was played in every state on FTA Live. Besides the 2 new teams there has been no change

We had the RL farce of the 2 Friday night games in different states. Making the 2nd game much less valuable because of the spoilers. You had Mel, Adelaide and Perth rarely starting the coverage before midnight.

Since then FTA has lost exclusivity to it's games. Stan. Netflix etc has made the ratings for even the big games drop.

So the FTA value has dropped.

As for Fox. You had 5 games of the 8 on the platform.
You also had the NRL streaming games on the website.

That ending and Kayo starting has seen a surge in ratings but you haven't had a proper season since. So was hard to justify more from them

Ok since we’re making stupid arguments

nz tv values the nrl at 70 million pa
It values the afl at zero pa

the afl really need to get more money from nz

Not just shown on fta getting great ratings in nsw and qld

ie as much as nrl

then the ratings collapsed and seven put the afl on the channel nobody watches

nsw and qld tv viewers have seen afl and decided they don’t like it

That sounds just like Vlandys negotiating tactic lol.
Fox you want to pay $100mill less and get some covid cuts, despite us shutting down telstra streaming and shutting down our media content? Sure thing
Ch9 you want to pay the same in 2027 as you did in 2017 and have covid cuts? Sure why not, lets not worry about inflation and extra content of a 17th team in Brisbane, which you've being crying out for for years.

Hopefully he isnt left to his own devices again to negotiate the 2028 contract!

no it doesnt. It has traditionally valued it at $20mill and from next year at $32mill. Yep it isnt interested in AFL. Win for NRL!

So where what were the ratings on NRL.com? How can you know what the ratings will be to get more from fox? You can only do what the data says at the time

Again is ch9 getting the same content as in 2017?

and? When talking about what Australian tv pays for each code there is no relevance to what NZ tv pays.
Why are we soooo far behind, and falling further behind in Australia? Like I said next year and in '24 we will be a massive $100mill a year behind in our Australian partnerships. They've got an extra a tv slot and more ad space. We've got origin and bigger Pay Tv subscription audience. Does that equate to $100mill in value?? Or has Vlandys just signed a really sht Australian component of the deal until 2028? Can we claw back that gap in '28 with an extra game or will we need something else? All good questions to ponder I'd suggest

Arguably opportunity for better with introduction of Brisbane2. They still have 3 FTA games a week in same time slots but from next year could boost Qlnd audiences with Brisbane2. And for that we got $5mill contra lol

Lets be honest the '23 deal was the first deal in the history of the modern game that was signed for no extra money from the games Australian media partners. There's no gilding the lily on that. Hopefully the '28 negotiations go better!
