CH9’S OLYMPICS CASH SPLASH

Channel 9 is paying $315 million for the Olympics until Brisbane in 2032. It’s a lot of money for what adds up to 10 weeks of live sport.

The network is also paying $100 million a year for two weeks of Australian Open tennis.

It makes their NRL deal look like a bargain.

Nine is paying just $115 million for 30 weeks of rugby league each year including exclusive rights three State or Origin games and the grand final.

News Limited reporter telling us what a bargain Ch9 got the NRL broadcast rights for. I`m still a supporter of PVL but I hope he`s reading this and squirming.

Well to be frank it kind of is. The game is getting ripped off by Pay TV as well.

Commentators slamming the refs becuase of "in their opinion'. Guess what dcks no one cares if youthink it was forward or not! I agree go back and watch games form 30 years ago and decisions hardly ever get questioned or played. Its a blight on the game.
re the qtrs thing, was ok but did stop momentum and flow of game. Might be worth a few $'s in a tv deal but not sure its worth changing the game for.
Like most, it's an easy game from the grandstand. If the commentators had a clue, they're welcome to pick up a whistle and show us how it should be done.

No one is disputing that, but I maintain that the faster the game gets and the less the amount of stoppages, the less having quarter and three-quarter time breaks would matter.

In relation to those talking about making NRL games into 4x 20 minute quarters, as opposed to the current 2 x 40 minute halves. If you did that, you would take away the fatigue factor in games, which would undermine certain aspects thought favourable in the current game.

If you go back to the old Amco Cup days, quite often teams who were near the bottom of the premiership table would do well in that competition as having a break after 20 minutes enabled them to be able to play a style which made up for their squad's lack of fitness and/or talent. Do we really want to suggest going back to that?

Production costs are very low for the Olympics too so less costs makes it more valuable not to mention it rates very well

Look like thoughts of Stans demise may have been a bit premature. Would Ch9/Stan go hard for all NRL rights and risk losing its partnership with Fox? Its clear they see sport as key driver for Stan.

Stan just offered for me to return one months free, Kayo offered me two months at $5 per month to come back. I took them both up. I'll quit my Stan before thew month is out. Kayo, I will see what happens.

Not according to Channel 7 it isn't. There was an article in the media back around the time it was announced quoting Seven Execs saying that due to production costs, they'd just about "break even" from a financial perspective when televising them. The advertising revenue didn't seem to completely cover their costs.

Yeh they might get the video feeds but thats a lot of commentators and panel shows they need, especially way its covered now with multiple streaming channels covering individual sports all at same time.
I thought the last Olympics coverage was outstanding and loved being able to watch lots of stuff, not just the usual swimming when Australians were taking part.

Stan have shown with their offer of 500 million pa for your beloved afl they have the funds

They've been incumbent partners in the rights for years. Sure theyve gone after each other but thats business, Nine selling Saturday night to them, Fox insisting on Friday 6pm etc. maybe they arent closely aligned for rights bidding but then why has no one challenged Ch9 for the FTA component in the last 3 deals?

If Ch9/Stan offer $500-550mill they'll win it. If they don't we need to ask some serious questions why they would value AFL more.

Can they afford to pay what they are for AFL AND put in a matching bid for NRL if Stan or Paramount offer $550mill? That would be around $400mill for the streaming rights element.

Foxtel aren’t losing their main content all they would be left with is afl for filler

Stan would crush them in winter

given foxtel turns over 2 billion pa I’m pretty confident they can afford to pay the nrl an extra 140 million pa

it all depends on stan

if they put in a decent bid then the nrl rights will end up at 550 to 600 million pa

And thats where we should be soon, not maybe in 2028!

I'd like to see 4 games FTA (Saturday night game of the week hyped up in decent stadiums only on FTA) and ninth game Sunday 6pm on streaming.
So 4 games FTA, 5 exclusive streaming.

If we can hit $500mil cash from Australia + whatever NZ ends up being that would be a big step up for NRL TV rights.

How much of that $2bill is generated from Foxsports?

Kayo streaming generates around $300mill revenue a year. How much is fox sports STV revenue?
