Also is it normal at these announcements for Rupert to be wheeled out or was he there to posture and send a message to the NRL?

Clearly this.

Rupey has had his Jimmies rustled severely by all this and must honestly believe the NRL has no alternatives to Foxtel. He's been making bad decisions for the last half decade or so and that's part of the reason the brood is finally being elevated in the hierarchy.

Strangely Gygnel did value expansion but doesn't look like nrl took any advantage of this. Fox looks to have thrown its hat into the afl corner, if it will want to fund nrl growth seems even more distant.

Afl expanded to drive TV, nrl waits for TV to drive expansion. So sad.

The networks have said they don't care about a 9th game. It would certainly not increase the value of the deal enough to make 1/18 of the pie more for existing clubs than the 1/16 they get now.

Then why did Ch9 come out an say a second Brisbane would be great.
A second Brisbane team and a Perth team would add an massive amount to the rights.

They've also lost a lot more money in nsw and qld then nrl has in Perth melbourne and adelaide

That depends if you think the better TV and corporate deals they have achieved have been partly due to that investment in expansion. Unproveable either way so comes down to opinion.

At least we have a few bullets left in our gun...

We need to have a expansion blue print on paper

2018 Brisbane 2
2020 Perth
so we can sell 9 games in 2023

Then

2025 Wellington
2027 Adelaide

Sell 10 games in 2028
A few bullets? We have a nuclear arsenal. Perth, Brisbane, Western Corridor, Wellington, Adelaide, Central Qld, Central Coast... I could go on. Your timescales are conservative as well. It will be 2 teams at once. We have Rep footy. We are the highest rating sport on TV. We will get a better deal overall than AFL. Just don't shit the bed in the meantime.

You can smell the fear tonight from News. Why else try and bag the NRL with subtle digs and pathetic scare tactics otherwise when at an AFL event. We have them where we want.

Why is it that RL is the topic of discussion on the biggest night for AFL?

Seriously, this is amazing. This is uncle Rupey right now -

Go lie down .
You're rambling with incoherent garbage .

Tell me how do they CONVERT RL supporters .
We have had derpball shoved down our throats for yrs ,with little to show .
But according to your f**ked up logic us RL fans will soon be watching AFL .

Get a grip .
You've totally lost the plot .

I think you need to better appreciate my point, how do News make money from paying the AFL 266m annually? According to Thomson they will use News resources to grow the game in NSW & QLD, which he regarded as untapped potential for AFL. Now we all know that's blow-in bs, no one gives two shits about their silly sport and never have, but that is News Corps business rationale for such a big investment, and quite obviously they are betting on it to succeed at the expense of rugby league, hence less money for NRL and likely a NRL broadcast partner that has a direct interest in promoting AFL over NRL in nsw & qld. Whether any of it will work isn't really the issue, the issue is the AFL now will in all likelihood have leaped ahead of us again in broadcast revenue thanks to their second Kerry Packer. It's not alarmist to suggest that the massive deal for the AFL probably isn't a good thing for us.

For all of the hysteria:

Nine are paying $900 m/five years for the NRL and Seven are paying $900m/6 years for AFL.

So far the NRL are $30m/year up on the AFL.

Sure it is the AFL agenda to grow their game in NSW and QLD (afterall where else is it going to grow) but rugby league won't stand still either it will grow also.

Google the AFL press conference from 2011 when they made their last announcement on their TV rights they were saying the same things about NSW and QLD as they are now and they were going to take over.

Could the NRL be aiming to produce and deliver the remaining 4 games per round to sell direct to customers the same way the big American sports do? It isn't out of the question, it mat hurt financially to start but they would certainly reap the benefits long term.

Is there also potential to sell games directly to regional TV? ie sell Raiders games to WIN in Canberra, Knights to NBN etc? Just thoughts that are probably a long way from any reality
