Ovechkin leads First All-Star Team

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=532564

Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin became the first player in NHL history voted a First Team All-Star in each of his first five seasons, highlighting the players named to the League's All-Star Teams for 2009-10.

Ovechkin surpassed the mark of Montreal Canadiens Hall of Fame goaltender Bill Durnan, who was named a First-Team All-Star in his first four seasons from 1943-44 through 1946-47. Joining Ovechkin on the First Team is Capitals teammate Mike Green, who earned his second consecutive berth on defense.

Each of the remaining First Team players is a first-time selection, including two Chicago Blackhawks -- defenseman Duncan Keith and right wing Patrick Kane. The last time the Blackhawks boasted as many First-Team All-Stars was in 1992-93 (goaltender Ed Belfour and defenseman Chris Chelios). Vezina Trophy-winning goaltender Ryan Miller of the Buffalo Sabres and Hart Trophy-winning center Henrik Sedin of the Vancouver Canucks complete the First Team.

Among those named to the Second Team is Canucks left wing Daniel Sedin, marking the first time in 36 years that brothers had earned berths on post-season All-Star Teams in the same year. In 1973-74, Boston center Phil Esposito earned First Team honors and Chicago goaltender Tony Esposito was voted to the Second Team.

Joining Daniel Sedin on the Second Team: goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov of the Phoenix Coyotes, defensemen Drew Doughty of the Los Angeles Kings and Nicklas Lidstrom of the Detroit Red Wings, center Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins and right wing Martin St. Louis of the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Voting for the All-Star Team is conducted among representatives of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association at the end of the regular season.

2009-2010 NHL First All-Star Team

G Ryan Miller, Buffalo Sabres
D Duncan Keith, Chicago Blackhawks
D Mike Green, Washington Capitals
C Henrik Sedin, Vancouver Canucks
RW Patrick Kane, Chicago Blackhawks
LW Alex Ovechkin, Washington Capitals

Second Team

G Ilya Bryzgalov, Phoenix Coyotes
D Drew Doughty, Los Angeles Kings

Sedin takes home Hart Trophy at NHL Awards

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=532580

LAS VEGAS – On a night full of star performances, perhaps the League's quietest player stole the spotlight at the 2010 NHL Awards Show at the Pearl Concert Theater at the Palms Casino.

Vancouver's Henrik Sedin pulled off a huge upset in winning the Hart Trophy as the NHL's MVP, beating out its two biggest superstars: the brash and gregarious Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby. Ovechkin had won the Hart in each of the past two years.

Sedin said Tuesday he didn't believe he had a chance to win the award against two established stars from the Eastern Conference. But one night later the Professional Hockey Writers' Association proved him wrong, giving him 46 first-place votes and 894 points, 60 points and six first-place votes more than Ovechkin.

"Like I said, those players are second to none,' Sedin said. "It's almost like I am not part of that group. I thought the Hart was going to be really, really tough. I thought maybe the (Ted Lindsay Award). I'll take this though.'

Sedin is just the second Swede, along with Peter Forsberg, to win the Hart Trophy.

Sedin also took home the Art Ross Trophy, given to the League's leading scorer, by piling up 112 points -- 30 more than his previous career high. Sedin also led the League in assists with 83. Still, he wasn't sure that resume was enough to beat the more established duo of Crosby and Ovechkin.

"They are the faces of the sport since they joined the League,' Sedin said. "To be standing next to them, it is a strange feeling. I'm very proud and it is a great honor for sure.'

Lindsay Award -- formerly the Lester B. Pearson Award -- as the players' MVP for the third-straight season, a feat previously achieved by only Wayne Gretzky and Montreal icon Guy Lafleur.

Crosby wasn't left out of the honors parade either, winning the Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award presented by Bridgestone. He also shared the Maurice "Rocket' Richard Trophy, as the League's top goal-scorer with Tampa Bay's Steven Stamkos. Each player scored 51 goals.

Chicago's Duncan Keith followed up a Stanley Cup title with a Norris Trophy after he was named the League's best defenseman for the first time. He beat Washington's Mike Green by 265 points.

Buffalo's Tyler Myers won the Calder Trophy as the League's best rookie in what was a landslide decision. He received 94 of the 132 first-place votes and his 1,178 points were 400 more than runner-up Jimmy Howard, the goalie for the Detroit Red Wings.

Myers is just the third player from the Sabres organization to win the Rookie of the Year Award, joining Gilbert Perreault and Tom Barrasso.

"It's nice to be put in that group of guys,' said Myers, who played almost 24 minutes a game, scored 48 points and was plus-13. "Even to be put in the group of rookies this year was enough for me. I was just happy to come and be in Vegas. To be able to walk up on stage, it's something I will never forget.'

It was a good night in Buffalo as goalie Ryan Miller won his first Vezina Trophy as the League's best goalie. Miller received 23 of the 30 first-place votes cast by NHL general managers. Ilya Bryzgalov of Phoenix finished second, 47 points behind Miller. New Jersey's Martin Brodeur, who won his fifth William Jennings Trophy as the lead goaltender on the team that allowed the fewest goals, finished third.

"I'm looking at all these names and the history on this trophy,' said Miller, who was also MVP of the Winter Olympics for the silver-medal winning Team USA. "To have my name on there is pretty amazing. My heroes are on here.'

Miller also won the NHL Foundation Award for his outstanding charitable contributions to his community.

The race for the Selke Trophy, awarded to the best defensive forward, was among the closest of the night. Detroit's Pavel Datsyuk claimed his third-straight Selke by just 33 points. Vancouver's Ryan Kesler received 36 first-place votes, just one fewer than Datsyuk.

Datsyuk was not as lucky in the race for the Lady Byng Trophy, awarded to the game's most gentlemanly player. Datsyuk had won the previous four seasons, but finished a distant third this time. Tampa Bay's Martin St. Louis won for the first time after several nominations.

"I have to thank Brad Richards,' St. Louis joked of the second-place finisher and former teammate with the Lightning. "He told me that Christmas cards to the referees really work.'

Dave Tippett of the Phoenix Coyotes capped a storybook season by running away with the Jack Adams Trophy, awarded to the League's best coach. Tippett orchestrated a 28-point turnaround by the Coyotes that earned the franchise its first playoff berth since 2002. He was rewarded by earning 291 points, 231 more than Nashville's Barry Trotz, the runner-up. Tippett also received 57 of the 59 first-place votes.

"We were a team that nobody gave much of a chance at the start of the year and we used that adversity as a motivating factor throughout our whole group,' he said. "In the end, we probably did a lot more than most people thought, but in Phoenix we think it is just the foundation of what we want to build on.'

Washington goalie Jose Theodore also battled through adversity this season, dealing with the grief of losing his young son, Chase, who died at the start of last season from complications stemming from his premature birth -- and was awarded the Bill Masterton Trophy for the way he battled through the tragedy.

"It's a mixed feeling. It was really tough year, but I'm proud of the way I handled myself,' Theodore said after finishing his teary-eyed speech.

The Coyotes' organization took home a second piece of hardware Wednesday night when Shane Doan won the King Clancy Memorial Trophy, which celebrates charitable and humanitarian contributions by a NHL player.

Hawks have done quite a big trade...

Hawks deal Byfuglien, Sopel to Thrashers

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=532495&navid=DL|NHL|home

It's official. Early Thursday morning, the Chicago Blackhawks traded playoff hero Dustin Byfuglien to Atlanta as part of a multi-player deal.

The Hawks will send Byfuglien, center Ben Eager, defenseman Brent Sopel and prospect Akim Aliu, a second-round pick in 2007, to the Thrashers for the first-round pick (No. 24) Atlanta acquired from New Jersey in the Ilya Kovalchuk trade, a second-round pick (No. 54) that also came from New Jersey, prospect Jeremy Morin, veteran forward Marty Reasoner and winger Joseph Crabb, who played his first 29 NHL games as part of the Atlanta franchise this past season.

The Hawks and Thrashers have a connection -- Rick Dudley, the Thrashers' new general manager, worked for the Blackhawks for five years before joining Atlanta last summer and being promoted to GM this spring.

Byfuglien, a 25-year-old forward, had 17 goals and 17 assists in 82 games with the Hawks during the regular season, then added 11 goals – including five game-winners, during Chicago’s run to the Stanley Cup. Sopel, 33, had 1 goal and 7 assists in 73 regular-season games and was 1-5-6 in 22 playoff games. Eager had 7 goals and 9 assists with 120 PIM in 60 regular-season games. He played 18 playoff games with 1 goal, 2 assists and 20 PIM.

"It is what it is," Byfuglien said on "The Afternoon Saloon" on ESPN 1000 in Chicago. "It's part of the job. You're not going to stick in one spot the whole time, so I've got to go."

"What we saw in the playoffs is the Dustin Byfuglien I imagined and who could become one of the league's elite power forwards," said Dudley in a 1 a.m. ET press conference call Thursday morning. "He has soft hands and he is as big a player as there is in the NHL. That combination is attractive."

Dudley called Eager "one of the NHL's better forecheckers" and said he adds toughness as both a player not afraid to fight when needed and "hits with a purpose."

Dudley said the deal was in the works for a while, especially after Chicago's Jonathan Toews earned a significant bonus for winning the Conn Smythe MVP earlier this month.

"I think I talked to Stan (Bowman, Chicago GM) more than when we worked together," said Dudley. "I am talking like maybe 50 calls in the last few days."
With the Hawks facing salary cap issues for 2010-11, defenseman Duncan Keith said losing some members of the team that won Chicago's first Stanley Cup since 1961 was inevitable.

"I've kind of heard about it. To be honest with you, it kind of saddens me," he said after winning the Norris Trophy as the NHL's top defenseman at the NHL Awards Show in Las Vegas. "It really does sadden me. Those are my good buddies leaving our team. Benny and Buff, I was with Buff since he was drafted.

"You know things are going to change when you win the Cup the way our Cap situation was, and things have to be made. It's too bad it had to be like this, but at the same time we've got to start looking forward. When these things do happen, I'm sure there might be some more, and it's not going to be fun. We're just going to have to keep moving forward, and a lot of times that's part of the business. It's hockey. Teams change every year and you lose friends, you lose teammates. You stay in touch, but it's not really the same as playing with them."

Reasoner, a 33-year-old who's played 11 NHL seasons, had 4 goals and 13 assists in 80 regular-season games. Crabb had 4 goals and 5 assists in his 29 games. Morin was taken in the second round (No. 45) by the Thrashers last year. He had 47 goals and 36 assists for Kitchener of the Ontario Hockey League in 2009-10, and also scored 2 goals and 5 assists for Team USA’s gold medal-winning squad at the World Junior Championship.

"You can't beat going to a team that just won the Stanley Cup," Reasoner told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's website.

"It's always a little shocking to be traded, but we've all gone through it before," he said of being traded. "I would have liked to stay in Atlanta for another year and help that team build, but it's a new chapter. It will be exciting. You can tell from watching the playoffs that the Blackhawks have taken over the city."

Report: Wings add Chelios -- to front office

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=535688

Chris Chelios is reportedly coming back to the Detroit Red Wings -- just not as a player.

A report by Fox Sports Detroit says the 48-year-old defenseman has confirmed his retirement and will be taking on a yet-to-be-determined role in the Wings' front office.

"It looks like I'm going to stay in Detroit and take a job with the Red Wings," Chelios reportedly told a Chicago Cubs TV audience Friday while appearing at Wrigley Field to sing "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" during the seventh-inning stretch -- a performance he dedicated to the late Bob Probert, a former teammate.

Red Wings GM Ken Holland told the Detroit Free Press: "I don't have a title for him, but he's going to do a little player development. After '09 when I told him we weren't going to re-sign him, I told him to keep in touch. He called me in May and told me he was going to take me up on my offer."

Chelios spent most of last season in the AHL with the Chicago Wolves, but played in seven games with the Atlanta Thrashers late in the season. It marked his record-tying 26th NHL season, including parts of 10 with the Red Wings after he was acquired from the Chicago Blackhawks in 1999 at the trade deadline.

Chelios, who won Stanley Cups with the Montreal Canadiens in 1986 and with the Wings in 2002 and 2008, played in 1,651 regular-season games and totaled 185 goals, 948 points, 2,891 penalty minutes and a staggering plus-350 career rating.

He also appeared in 266 postseason games, finishing with 31 goals, 144 points and 423 penalty minutes.

Chelios was originally selected by Montreal in the second round of the 1981 Entry Draft.

Selane (however you spell his name haha) is coming back to the Ducks for another season it's been reported.

Sid and Mario got to sakte on the ice at the Pens new home as well it looks pretty damn awesome too

Red WIngs have signed a veteran defensemen (can't remember his name) and Chelios has also been moved into the office with the club for some behind the scenes work.

The Kovy deal has been ruled out (for the reported 17years and how may millions it was) so he is back on the market for now though him, his manager and the Devils have got straihgt into re-organizing a new deal for him. Rumour has it the Kings might come back into contention for him but we'll see if that turns out to be true.

All this I have read from the NHL's official website

Game recap from nhl.com

Penguins 4, Blackhawks 1 Associated Press
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Evgeni Malkin scored for Pittsburgh and the Penguins beat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-1 Tuesday night.

Dustin Jeffrey, Nick Johnson and Mark Letestu also had goals for Pittsburgh, and Paul Martin had two assists. Kyle Beach scored for Chicago, which fell to 1-3 in the preseason. The Penguins are 4-0.

The game matched the past two Stanley Cup champions - but the lineups did not. Malkin played, but fellow Penguins stars Sidney Crosby, Marc-Andre Fleury and Brooks Orpik were among the scratches. Chicago chose not to dress, among others, Jonathan Toews, Duncan Keith, Marian Hossa and Marty Turco.

Both of the Penguins' third-period goals went in off of Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook.

Oh also forgot to mention Red Wings will open their 1st game of the NHL's new season at their home, the Joe against the Maple Leafs on October 20th, while the Penguins will be playing on the same night at the Blackhakws home ice. That is going to be a hell of a game. Two side both relatively young and the last two Stanley Cup Winners...gonna be great!!!
