NRL and its clubs are expected to palm-off expansion until 2014 or 2015

Of the three favourites which two teams make the most sense?

WA are a must imo ..Brisbane should also definately have a second team....but the Broncos will be doing everything possible to make it not happen . The current setup for them now is too favorable and advantageous .

We can't allow Demetriou and the AFL to go around the country claiming that AFL is the national code, that's bullshit.

Therefore WA Reds should be next in, closely followed by Ipswich Jets. There is no need for an 11th NSW team.

In the next round Wellington should be a priority and PNG if they are ready.

I don't think PNG will ever be a reality tbh. Who would want to live there?? The logistics of the travel would be painful.

ohh look another expansion thread! :)

Done to death but, in order of priority;

2014
1. WA Reds
2. Brisbane Bombers (if solid proposal, if not CC Bears)

2020
1. Wellington
2. CC (if no team has relocated) or Adelaide (if they have got their act together)

2025
1. PNG (if the country isn't still a basketcase)
2. Adelaide (if not in 2020) or CQ/Sunshine Coast/Ipswich (basically another Q'land team)

I'd go with slight modification:

2014:
1 WA Reds
2 Brisbane #2 - NRL Commission to decide best bid from those applying

* Central Coast team to enter via a Sydney merger or relocation some time between expansion rounds.

2020
1 Wellington or Christchurch (Christchurch may have a stadium again by then)
2 Another Queensland-based team (Brisbane3? Central Queensland?)

I'm not sure Adelaide will be ready by 2020.. I'd love to be proven wrong, but perhaps the NRL & clubs can at least look at taking more games there to raise some more interest in the meantime?

Central Coast Bears 2013/14 - the demand is there, the corporate partners are in place, the schools, juniors and grades are all behind it, the resources are there, the support is there, sponsors, businesses are all beind the bid, huge community support, you have influential media persons like Singo and AJ behind the push. It's immediate success, all the infrastructure is in place already. If the only thing that people hold against it is too many Sydney teams, then sorry but no one services North Sydney or the Central Coast. No one has taken advantage of this huge league heartland. No one has invested time, resources into the region like the Bears bid have. All the ingredients for success are there established.

W.A. Reds 2014/15.

Ipswich/Western Corridor 2017/20.

Wellington or Central Queensland 2017/20.

It's all fair to say this place or that place deserves a team but without sufficient ground work, foundations in place and resources being spent then it's all hypothetical. How about bids prove they can sustain a bid for a few years first, sustain community support, build equity each year. What's the point of plonking a team without these key area's being shorn up first? What happens when bad seasons mount up? Sponsors don't re-sign? Fans don't turn up? TV money for all it's power cannot save clubs or bids in that instance and regardless of what many think, they are important. Not only to bids but existing clubs.

Bloody well let them all in and let the comp mature from there. Did God at some point pass down a commandment that there must be only 18 sides?

And here is a spanner in the works. If the warriors win the comp there is a massive chance a second NZ side could be on the cards. Wellingotn have already started making noise today

Wouldn't be a bad option. Perth + Wellington has enormous scope for code growth. Perth + Wellington then two Queensland sides after that would be great....

Perth & Brisbane2 in the next expansion round, Then New Zealand 2 & another Queensland team (Brisbane3 or Central Queensland) in around 2020?

That would make the balance of a 20-team competition as follows:
10 NSW
5 Queensland
2 NZ
1 ACT
1 Vic
1 WA
This is what should happen.
BUT, some current NSW clubs may struggle to the point of relocating or folding, and there is a strong case for the Bears franchise, which would be more successful than a couple of current teams.

The plan should be bring in Perth and a Brisbane bid as our next expansion, and look to a relocation in Sydney, maybe a re-evaluation of licences in Sydney - no point keeping perenial basket cases dragging along on the NRL breadline and holding back the Bears.

What should happen is the best 2 bids get up. Otherwise the IC are negligent or not independent.

And no one will know which are the best two bids until all have their day in front of the IC.

Expand - merge/relocate - expand might be the best path to follow.

I agree that the best 2 bids should get up. However, in saying that, the IC needs to consider what criteria to judge which bids are best. It could be that a team in say Liverpool could tick all the boxes in terms of sponsors and members but that would hardly grow the game.

The IC must have a goal for what it wants the competition to look like 20 years down the track and make decisions to achieve that goal.

I agree with holding ir off to be honest. The house needs to be put into some kind of order before expansion is done, and then let's do it right, with genuine development of fan bases (I know a lot of clubs are already doing this, but it'll have extra clout with a licence).

Do it once, do it right.

That's ridiculous. WA Reds need to come in 2013, 2014 at the latest. Along with Ipswich Jets.
I noticed he mentioned the ninth broadcast slot. Well you can't have that without 2 new teams.

Isn't any statement by Dave a bit meaningless because of:

A) The IC being the "body" that will determine this (whenever the hell they are formed, but even the most pessimistic would think well before 2015.

B) The fact that the NRL has publicily announced no expansion plans before (with the Gold Coast) and backflipped within months of that statement.

Gallop remains adamant there will be no expansion in the near future. Wonder if it is to appease the existing clubs who would rather see no expansion? Surely the value of an extra game a round becomes more valuable the sooner it is available to TV?

Yes - one would assume the extra game brings extra value.

So the cynic might suggest this is Gallop helping out his old mates...
