NRL rebellion: Rugby league clubs want CEO Dave Smith gone or threaten to leave comp

love how it starts off with concern for 'league communities' then quotes paranoid dinosaurs complaining it's about eroding their influence :lol

The NRL obviously want a draft, which means decoupling development from NRL clubs and making them franchises, good in theory, but too messy to ever become a reality in NSW. I don't think it's worth it, better off just tinkering with the NSW cup as best they can to make it a state wide competition.

I also think if a player is old enough to vote they're old enough to sign a contract, 19th birthday seems like a strange cut-off imo.

Aim low and youll never be disappointed.

In NSW NRL clubs are NSW junior districts

Has been that way for 110 years

While there is a need for adjustment the only need is to establish a state wide structure

But to dismantle 110 years is just plain dumb

The entire history of RL is defined by innovative ideas and challenges to the status quo...

Had they followed your logic in 1908 and not reinvigorated the rules/challenged for player wages, we'd all be stuck watching park-level union now.
1970, they said that cleaning up the grubby shit would kill the game, instead it great massively.
In 1980, Origin was born because they challenge the accepted norm.
9s is brand new, do you want to kill that because "thats not how we've done it for 110 years"??

The fact is that in any business/organisation/government, they dissolve and restructure constantly, for greater efficiency and better results. These junior pathways should not be immmunte to this because of some poorly defined notion of "this is just how we've always done it".

Ofcourse history is valuable, but it is only one factor of many. It does not out way all of the drawbacks of our current ad hoc system...

Where do we find a list of players that actually played and stayed at NRL level for the district they 'juniored' in . . . fmd, according to the 'junior worshippers' Parra and Penrith should have no need to ever sign anyone born outside their postcode

NSWRL compares proposed changed to SL War

Dec 14, 2015 SMH

NSWRL boss Dave Trodden has compared the NRL's proposed pathways changes to that of the infamous Super League competition.

A new second-tier competition to be introduced in 2018 would include the merger of several Sydney clubs and the inclusion of numerous regional entities, according to News Corp Australia.

The competition would also see rival clubs juniors amalgamated into the zones, a move that is said to have angered a number of powerbrokers.

"We should have learned the lessons of Super League about what happens when rugby league communities get disenfranchised," Trodden said.

"It would be a terrible thing. By trying to reconfigure the game, we ultimately cause communities that have been involved in the game for over 100 years to no longer be part of it."

The proposed Platinum League would involve a southern (NSW) and northern (QLD) conference, with the two winners to meet on NRL grand final day.

The likes of Canterbury, St George and Sutherland would be forced to merge together in the second-tier competition, while Canberra would amalgamate with Illawarra, and Manly the Central Coast.

There would also be a New Zealand side along with a Pacific Nation team in the southern conference, while at least one match a week would be broadcast live on the Nine Network.

It would also see the abolition of the current under-20s competition, while young players could also be banned from signing a contract until they turn 19.

You can aim as low as you want, rugby league will still find a way to disappoint.

I don't mind the concept, but to do it properly means blowing up what we already have and I doubt the NRL's ability to sell it.

This is the definition of aiming low. Shuffling around 2nd division instead of actually expanding the top level.

Junior development in heartlands is probably the strongest part of the Australian Rugby League system - the clubs do it well.

The only reason to blow this all up is as part of some greater plan - one in which the clubs no longer exist in their current form. Of course they're going to fight it, and so they should.

firstly and idea is not great because its an idea or change.
RL has always been about tradition and while the game has evolved you can't strip the tradition.

More importantly any funding that gets to some of the junior clubs comes from their NRL parent club (or similar eg Souths Juniors). The NRL propose basically to dismantle this at the kids level. Effectively this removes funding for junior league as the NRL despite what its press releases say gives nothing to the junior clubs.
Geez thats really innovative.

Bullshit...

The system has massive overlap in some places and is non-existent in others, which i exactly what you should expect in an ad hoc system

and who's fault is that? The clubs'? No it is the ARLC and it's predecessors. Instead of addressing the problem they are merely creating more under cover of "fixing the problem" which it is doubtful the proposal does. Further if the aim is for a draft, they have a 0% chance of it coming about as it is illegal at law and I can't see some young prospect not challenging it in court. The ARLC keep showing when it comes to change their idea is to impose change and consult no one except itself.

Junior development is the way forward for Rugby League, and the more the merrier as regards junior development.
We are still not doing enough junior development in my opinion.
We need to up our game.

If they aren't bringing in a national reserve grade comp then leave the NSW cup alone(besides maybe adding a Fiji team) and change the NYC to U/23.

Has there been any word on who helped Richardson put this plan together? As in who did he consult with?

I'd like to know where Newtown and North Sydney stand in this. Progress is one thing but culling 2 foundation clubs each who have 107 years of history is criminal, though nothing surprises me with the administrators in this game. Surely they would be part of the plan forward. Obviously some of these decision making clowns have never spent a day at Henson Park.

You say that an idea isnt great just because its an idea (fair enough), but you need to acknowledge that tradition isnt great simply because it is tradition...

Just because it has been one way for 110 years doesnt mean its a good system, just that we have never bothered to or been able to change a bad one.

A kid doesnt grow up longing to play reserve grade, and any adults that watches RL will be focused on the top level.

The lower levels are not about the spectators (so that branding doesnt matter in that slightest), they are about the player development; and on that count they are less effective than they should be.

More importantly any funding that gets to some of the junior clubs comes from their NRL parent club (or similar eg Souths Juniors). The NRL propose basically to dismantle this at the kids level. Yes, without the incentives of the current system, the clubs will have no reason to invest in juniors. But if the ARLC is offering to fund the majority and 14 of the 16 clubs are running deficits, the clubs should be happy that their burden is reduced.

The only reason they are saying "this will lead to relocations" is because they know their club is poorly run and doesnt offer much. The claim that "we develop juniors" is just an anchor to justify their continued existence as poorly run clubs.

This is "fixing the problem". The ARLC is trying to disolve the current system and establish a more effective model.

And of course its the clubs fault. Their pure self-interest means they will never organise with the other clubs in defining who should represent the prime location and they will never invest money into the "low yield" areas.

The ARLCs goal, on the other hand, is junior development itself; not extracting future NRL players. They have the capacity to create an objective model that covers all areas and doesnt leave gaps.

Further if the aim is for a draft, they have a 0% chance of it coming about as it is illegal at law and I can't see some young prospect not challenging it in court. The ARLC keep showing when it comes to change their idea is to impose change and consult no one except itself.

Im persoanlly not a fan of the draft, but that is a separate issue.
