That's a lot of $!

Free registration & insurance would be a good start.

Older players need to be compensated if injured playing the game & have to miss work.

I guess this rules out relocation for the time being. The clubs cannot whinge now after this funding, but if we are honest who can see the same issues come up again in 7 years with the same clubs whining about money. Even though its mostly their own mismanagement causing the issue.

So does a perpetual license mean its a contract with no end date?

Money for grassroots is a massive boon.

Is it money for grass roots? It says to grow the game at all levels from grass roots to elite. Half of it could be marketing spend based on that.

Good news for the clubs. That's clubs happy, media happy, Grant gets to keep his job. Anyone wondering why the tv deal seemed rushed here's your answer, commission needed clubs signed up and happy to keep their positions, to do this they needed the to $'s in the bank to give them to make them happy.

Terrible news, will there ever be a long-term plan for expansion for rugby league ever. The moment the ARLC was formed, there should of been plans for the long-term. Instead, it's the same old keeping the clubs happy, while they hold the game down with there mismanagement.

Others codes had the courage and confident to expand there game, yet rugby league doesn't. Always self-interest and insular thinking holding the game down once more.

there were plans until they got sick and tired of PR's posts, emails, tweets and phone calls

Thats bloody depressing. With the funds that are avilable from 2018 and the additional revemue that would be unlocked by a ninth game i find this attitude puzzling and sad. Surely the nrl's footprint would be high up im any strategic whole of game review so far grant to say this raises questions of what richo is actually doing.

The bears, pirates etc may as well pack up shop for the next 5 years because i do t think anything is going to happen before 2022

So this was the year they were going to get off their arse and talk expansion. That's what they said.

So they were f**king lying. They've clearly done nothing.

That fat slug richo costanza must be napping under his desk and occasionally emerging to do a few minutes work on the penski file for his massive pay cheque.

This has to be the weakest, most inept bunch of merkins to ever run a professional sporting body.

They have no interest in growing the sport and no ability to run it.

And the fact their spin doctors are actually celebrating this as if its a great thing only highlights it further.

Pirates bid packed up 2 years ago, they were clearly told that there is no plans for expansion I the next decade.

Haha of course they will!

However, the expectation is clubs will be back in the black or at least at break-even point by 2018 after the NRL gave them the funds to turn around their businesses.
The Kiwi entrepreneur's case to the ARL was based on having a true grasp of the game's finances and pitching a case based on how other global sporting organisations funded their constituents. Now that League Central has acceded to their demands – and not put any stipulation on how the cash is spent – Campbell said the clubs have no excuses for not become self-sustainable.
"The long-stop date for all clubs to be in a position to at least break even is 2018," Campbell said. "We've now been given the tools to be self-sustainable.
"As boards, if we can't take that opportunity and run with it, we need to be accountable for that. The two good things that have come out of this is we have started to trust each other, the clubs and the commission. The clubs have worked together, the position presented to the NRL in terms of a future funding model was endorsed by all 16 clubs.
Grant said that "expansion was not on our agenda at the moment" but was confident the deal would result in clubs currently propped up or owned by the NRL – such as the Gold Coast and Newcastle – soon returning to traditional ownership models

It's not hard.
All along Grant and Smith stated, the first imperative was to get the existing NRL clubs financially underpinned,so as not having to run cap in hand all the time for additional handouts
and rely in many cases on poker machine money.
The new deal will ensure the NRL clubs will at least break even and not have to rely on pokies, thank the sunshine for that.
Or do we flick a club or relocate just for expansion's sake, and give a free leg up to other codes,al la North Sydney.

Secondly and we all have been bitching about it(including me) the lack of grassroots support in regionals and the cities. The new deal provides an extra $100m pa for that from 2018.

Grant has stated the obvious that ATM,these are the priorities, and he has not dismissed expansion ,just by saying not on the agenda ATM.

For a start the much vaunted Richardson report hasn't been yet announced with its recommendation, just a couple of leaks. This may well recommend expansion at a certain time.

I want expansion to Perth as much as PR does, but our admin and clubs have stuffed up so much join the past,it's time for consolidation to get the clubs and grassroots back to where they should be.Then the NRL can look at Perth and Banana 2 at the earliest possible and financially sensible time.

By all means flick a club or relocate one and watch in 3D and vivid colour the damage that would do to the game, and the joy on the faces of the fumble, rah rah and soccer administrations.

It's an easy get out clause to say all current clubs must be financially stable before they will even start thinking about expansion.

They're washing their hands of it because they're too weak to do it.

Were all clubs financially stable when the cowboys and warriors entered? Were they stable when the storm entered?

It's pissweak administration by a mob that has no interest in actually growing the sport at any level.

They just want a homogenised domestic TV product and nothing more.

It's not a get out clause,it has been stated from day one they took over the reins..

Blame Gallop for making promises and building up hopes for bidders .Grant has his faults but he never stated expansion would be definite at such and such a time.If he did i must be missing something. And I'm all for expansion.

I remember when the Cowboys and Warriors entered, the Warriors got into financial difficulty a few years later, the Crushers went out the backdoor, and the poor old Reds got shafted because they were lumbered with travel & accommodation. We have four Sydney clubs sailing close to the wind ATM.

Even Arko admitted ,his " Why not go to another four teams ATT " was a bit rushed.

I suggest the NRL has learnt a lesson, that you expand when your clubs are in order. Why create further debacles along the line. That does not mean that there will be no expansion.

Yeah that's why they are providing an extra $100m pa,pissweak indeed.

OK let's expand now,and flick the monies allocated to grassroots. You are always first cab off the rank, whining about lack of support in the bush.

I understand where PR is coming from, but he has zero interest in what the fans of established NRL clubs care about.
