If players want to be mad it should be at the clubs who want 5 million over the cap to cover for the inability to grow memberships are crowds

that’s where most of the revenue is going

I would love to see a comparison with other codes to compare

That $5 mil covers football operations

Eg coaches, trainers and support staff

To be fair they do player development unlike other codes

Other questions I have are

does the 32/34% base request include
- player support schemes
- insurance payments
- retirement fund
- rep payments
- NSWRL, QRL tier 2/3 player payments
- Junior player payments
- travel costs
- award payments & events
- grassroots payments
- developing the game costs

Nope, Alot of that is covered in the club grant though

Clubs used to cover it themselves

heck under gallop the tv grant didn’t even cover the salary cap and clubs had to cover the shortfall themselves

the goal was always for the grant to cover the cap

then it became 30 percent over the cap under grant

now it’s more like 40 percent over the cap

meanwhile crowds and membership revenue have stagnated

players should be arguing with clubs not the arlc

Anyone that decided to knock back Jen Hawkins really shouldn't be in a position to make any meaningful decisions ever again.

I wouldn't trust Newtown to have to decide between coffee or tea with his breakfast.
Yes thats blasphemy, clint shouldn't be head of anything

If thats the case then they actually want more than 34%
They want to be paid 34%. Then they want the nrl to be putting aside money aside for those other things.
I’d suggest a lot of it is coming from seeing the afl agree to boost funding to the aflpa to $60mill.
In comparison the nrl slashed the player welfare fund from $17mill to $7mill last year.

Clubs should be able to generate enough revenue to cover that. Certainly shouldn’t be needing an extra $2mill a year when that soft football cap hasn’t changed.

We are close to the point where the nrl is giving as much money to clubs as the afl does, despite us having one club less and heading towards $200million revenue a year less!
how are they supposed to build an asset base and invest in the game and grassroots if the clubs are sucking up more and more of the revenue?

at the signing of the last tv deal clubs and players got 42% of revenue. This year it is predicted to be 48.5%, and could well end up even higher. AFL in ‘21 was 41% to clubs.

$60m / 36 teams isn't a better deal than RLPA have been offered

Will the Players strike over this though and are all Players Members of the RLPA?

The majority of Public Support won't be with the players if they did.

Looking overseas when MLB and NFL players went on strike over their labour disputes with franchise owners and their salaries were made public - support dropped to just about zero

Interesting perspective from a past player about this -

Holy f**k if this isn’t an ‘old man yells at cloud scenario’.

The funny thing is he talks about leaving a legacy for the game, and how much better the players today have it - yet the players are negotiating for better futures for future players FFS.

Noel Cleal is your typical ‘back in my day’ boomer who thinks because the current players don’t have it as tough that they’re being spoilt. It’s called progress you neanderthal.

Also had to laugh at his comments about players showing no loyalty to their clubs - a bit rich for a guy who played with 4 different clubs and then was in coaching and management for another 4.

All this talk across multiple threads of clubs not being able to grow membership, I’ve not bought mine yet because to be honest with other life pressures it’s hard to fork out the $400+ on something like footy tickets. I’m not the only one who has made that decision I’m sure.

Newton has always been trouble. He would always have disputes with coaches and left a team over one. The Union is going to bleed the NRL dry. If the players strike it will be the damage of super league all over again.
Why do the Broncos always cause the most trouble? They're the ones that whores themselves off to the super league first and now this crap
