NRL's growth mindset points to 18th team. And it ain't Perth.

They manage to run a league across all capitals with far less resources than NRL, and arguably would get less from broadcast rights & sponsorship if they didn't have that footprint.. maybe even sending it into unviable territory.

AFL doesn't copy the NRL with midsize regional centres because

a) AFL-land doesn't really have many Townsvilles or Newcastles or Wollongongs to expand to, besides Tasmania (likely next).

b) They wanna put East Coast top tier teams in big metros (and have local derbies!).

c) They realise they're close to the limit for competition size right now - arguably they may have overstretched to 18 teams. However 20 teams will probably be it for some time - adding Tasmania (the closest they have to a small regional team to expand in AfL-land - and long teased) & likely either Perth 3 or NT or Canberra... Perth being "big metro", Canberra admittedly being a mid size market, but strategic as the national capital, and it's location near the Barassi line is strategic too.
So how big a market is tasmania lmao

instead of trying to turn the nrl into a watered down version of the afl why not just be happy with what the game has

you know last year our competition beat theirs by 23 million viewers and that’s ignoring rep games and nz

afl has no international presence. League has markets in nz and png which needs teams which will benefit the game hugely

The irony is despite Sydney being twice as large as Brisbane, the Broncos generate two to three times more revenue than the Sydney clubs. Even the Cowboys generate more revenue than the Sydney clubs and they're from a regional city that has just 180k people. It proves that the Sydney clubs don't belong in a national competition. They had their time when they were relevant and important in the NSWRL, but they're now in the NRL and have become outdated and are holding the game back.
That's a ridiculous statement beyond measure.
The Sydney clubs like Souths who are a global brand.
Those Sydney clubs that make up the majority of the league have us the most watched sport in Australia!
Generate the most talent.

I'm a Queenslander and I'll be cheering on the Dolphins this year but there's no doubting the importance of those Sydney clubs in history and today.

In an age of superficial start up corporate bs . People are increasingly aware of the importance of history and tradition. What you're proposing is the disbanding of RL greatest asset.
Peanut.

We could certainly take the burger king v McDonalds approach and be happy being second biggest for sure. Its not very ambitious but it is so RL.
We're not the second biggest.
We have 23 million more viewers than AFL...
Probably because we don't have a pointless Perth team that only Perth would bother to watch 😉
Adelaide and Perth make up 4 teams in the AFL and that's a lot of games the rest of the country couldn't give 2 f**ks about..😉

23 million excluding New Zealand

15 nrl sides beat 18 afl sides by 23 million viewers

nz would’ve added 7 million

rep games around 14 million

There games go for 30% longer and they have an extra game.
They are literally selling 40% more content.
But don't let facts get in the way of a good story.

Why don't you do some calculations based on a per hour metric..
Let me know how that works out 😉

And we have a bigger audience, as you have pointed out!, and origin.

That would the the best guide to use per hour, That also doesn't count the extra breaks in play

Good isn't it.
24 hour sports channels need content through. The longer time span of the content has ,the higher value it commands. More time filled not paying for other content, more opportunities for ads. Add in replays and it's multiplied.
We have the whopper with cheese.
They are selling 5 cheese burgers.

Rugby league will have another fixture soon though and internationals are on the up . Rugby league will overtake AFL in every metric in 10 years.

But it discounts any other variable such as subscriber rates, audience size, audience location, content such as origin and tests etc. If the 9th game is one of the key value variables why the frick has it take so long to get it in place?
