NRL's growth mindset points to 18th team. And it ain't Perth.

The fact that the only way the golden child of this forum (Perth) gets a team is via a club many of them have derided for 20 years (bears) is delicious

I’m a bit gutted nz2 will miss out but will take pleasure Perth only got their team via a foundation nswrl club
As im sure you're pleased with yourself giving crap to the guys who hate on NSWrl, its still being disingenuous to the areas they speak of..
Perth should have never have been disbanded as well as Adelaide for some stupid notion that the game could only afford a certian amount of teams back in 2000, yes there were a few deadshit clubs around, but nothing that couldn't have been fixed within a half decade or so.. superleague was the future, and with it came pay packets worthy of the athletes who played the game..
My gripe isn't bring back the nswrl or brl or Whatever fued most of you dribble about here, its about making the game competitive anywhere we expand to

What happened to Perth was karma for betraying the arl

they put their faith in Murdoch who the killed them off for Melbourne.

if they had survived the cull they wouldn’t have spent two seconds worrying they helped cause the death of the bears

And this is why people dislike the preciousness and self entitlement of Sydney rugby league so much!

Yeah and how is anybody going to be interested in it? Is TV going to show matches from a third grade competition? Where is the money to now fund their competition going to come from?

You’re essentially making that competition an amateur competition in reality and it would die very quickly in its current format.

Also, for what particular purpose? The NSW model hasn’t been better in any way than the QLD model. They haven’t produced better talent tor example. The point is essentially you are making a competition totally redundant just so a few hundred people can watch reggies. It makes no sense.

You don't think the NSW sides positions on the ladder doesn't go with all of them running 2nd tier sides? They are able to run systems so as a result when they hit FG the players don't look garbage.

The Dolphins will have a huge advantage here, It will be a good gauge.

As for the drop off. Lets use Cowboys of their 36 players. The top upto 20 wouldn't play a game in the feeder situation.

Of the remaining 16 they are split between 3 clubs, We are talking 5 guys a side

A couple of clubs don't have Fringe NRL players as it is now

Step 1. Blow up the existing NSWRL and QRL.

Step 2. ?????????????????

Step 3. Profit.

Sounds like a solid business plan guys...
Those guys are probably wasting 20 million pa on bs

the nswrl has approx ten million cash at bank wtf do they have cash reserves for

the nrl should be running everything

the biggest problem the commission had that the old arlc didn’t have was the clubs and state bodies have too much control so money gets wasted on vested interests

the qrl literally opposed the addition of another brisbane nrl side because it will hurt their domain

these fossils need to be punted into the sun

The Cowboys seemed to have gone alright last year under the Qld Cup model. How have the Storm gone using the QLD Cup model and picking up QLD Cup players for the last 20 years? Broncos have fielded their reserve players in the Qld Cup for pretty much their whole existence - has it negatively effected them. See how ridiculous that argument is.

That aside, even if you did see a problem why would you blow up the QLD Cup and pretty much make all these clubs financially unviable just to fix the problem that you have identified. What are you Liz Truss?

You look at our side of the fence as well where are Newtown, Norths, Blacktown, Mounties etc playing now?

That is what V’Landys wants to do supposedly by running a NRL reserve grade competition.
Yeah, it's a bad idea.

I don't have a problem with the NRL taking over NSW and QLD governing bodies. It's the dismantling of those competition structures and historic clubs to replace it with some fantasy reserve competition that I am concerned about.

Read it again before you blow up. I said do you need a) a Townsville side and b) two Central Queensland sides
Yes, you do, because these places are not one suburb over from a team, they are 100s of kilometres away from each other.

These areas aren't like Sydney and Brisbane, where the game is at best a passing interest to the majority. They are also in the heart of Rugby League country, and are the only game in town.

The NRL has exactly zero track record in community engagement and junior development, I'd be highly wary of them being able to do this job, particularly given there track record running the top competition is pretty patchy.

For mine, it's best they concentrate on getting there own house in order first.

They had a decent run with injuries.

If Drinkwater gets injured next year, Which one of the 3 feeder team fullbacks replaces him?

You haven't got a direct relationship with NRL clubs would be the only change, You aren't blowing up the comp though cause the teams stay in place. The Leagues club will still fund them

Do you think Sponsors were involved in the off chance that David Fifita or someone played a game? So why would that change. Just self interest

As for NSW side of it, Maitland Pickers won a 3rd tier hybrid comp.

Ron Massey Cup sides could join them as the premier tier in the state, without the NRL clubs then sides like Fiji would then get top billing. Possibly even then is viable for Country teams to enter

Someone like Dubbo playing on GF day v a QLD side would be huge for the bush. These chances don't exist with the current structure

It’s the clubs jobs to do community engagement and junior development and they do an excellent job at it

the nrls house is sure built on better foundations than the nswrl or qrl

On the latter point this forum specialises in concocting the most far fetched conspiracy theories every time the arlc tries something

I trust them to run the game better in a proper manner

Here is another pointed question:

What FTA coverage did the NSW Cup get?
None bar GF day

NRLW has taken over

There was no Foxtel Qld Cup coverage until a few finals games but there was a NSW Cup game until NRLW season started

So already all of this talk of broadcasters for the fantastic Qld & NSW Cup is a mute point. Even if though we have a dedicated RL channel on paytv. We dont get games broadcast and only get highlight style replays

@Get Rid of The Donkeys knows f**k all about NQ and it's local comps if he is happy to write off regional teams.

@Colk Rockhampton is 750km away from Townsville, its like saying let's scrap Penrith because the Raiders are in the same region

We're talking about restructuring the Queensland Cup into a second division to cater for areas that will never have their own NRL team. Try to keep up with the discussion.

Laughable bullshit, ruining all that history for some weird geographic autism.

What is your obsession with LGAs? Nobody follows a team based on there rates notice.

The BRL clubs have changed their identity in numerous occasions. Souths were known as South Brisbane in 1908 and rebranded as Carltons towards the end of WWI. They rebranded to Southern Suburbs in 1933 and were known as the "The Lions" before becoming "The Magpies" in 1959.

I've been to Davies Park in West End and Brandon Park in Acacia Ridge to see Souths play. Their crowds make up about 50 people, with just 10 or 20 making the effort to watch from the sidelines. The adjacent volleyball and soccer fields draw more interest. Davies Park is dilapidated mess. At the northern end there's a rundown turn style sitting idle that hasn't been used in decades. Along the western terrace there's a decades old wooden bench. The change rooms still have the 1990s Southern Suburbs Magpies logo.

Devils played under the name "Pastoral Grammars" from their inception in 1923 until 1933, when they became "Northern Suburbs" because the competition became district-based. Players had to live within a team's district to play for them. The exception was Pastoral Brothers Leprechauns, who only selected players who went to a Catholic school.

The other day you wrote off the BRL as a competition that no one gave two f**ks about towards the end of the 80s. You've said there's no interest in a second division. Now you're pretending to care about the history of BRL clubs you know nothing about and saying Townsville should have the Cowboys and Blackhawks. Make up your mind on what you want instead of arguing for the sake of it.

Eastern Suburbs played as Coorparoo between 1917 and 1933. Last year they rebranded as Brisbane Tigers.

You wouldn't know shit about SEQ. There's very distinct geographic rivalries between, Brisbane, Logan and Ipswich. I've spent half of my life in Brisbane and the other half in Logan. The two cities are different and I've seen the bitterness that residents from the two cities have for one another.
