Your correct Frank Facer - no Simms , what the f@@k ? ? How could they not include him in the team ( or alleged team ) is beyond me as he has been the form 2nd rower of the competition to date .

I sincerely hope that this is not correct as the man has done everything right this season and it would be a monumental travesty if he is not wearing the sky - blue jersey of NSW .

KICKOFF: Dragons contemplate Origin drain
Dragons Den News
r0_0_2253_3500_w1200_h678_fmax.jpg

MAGNIFICENT SEVEN: Ben Hornby, Trent Barrett, Matt Cooper, Luke Bailey, Mark Gasnier, Ben Creagh and Jason Ryles were part of a club record contingent of Blues during the the 2005 Origin series. Picture: Ken Robertson

And so it begins. The State of Origin period set to derail the Dragons season.

At least that’s what the red v faithful fear, and rival fans hope. It’s founded on some evidence after witnessing the Dragons fade out of the top eight last season, with only a fraction of rep commitment they’ll no doubt encounter this season.

Heading into Saturday’s one versus two clash with Penrith, the Dragons have seven players in legitimate contention for selection.

Should they all earn Origin call-ups it would equal the club record seven players who took part in the 2005 series. The Dragons also contributed six players in 2004 and five in 2006.

They reached the prelim final in two of those three seasons but Mark Gasnier, who played in five series during his career, recalls his final campaign in 2011 being the toughest.

A year after claiming the 2010 crown, Wayne Bennett's side had six players involved, including debutants Jamie Soward and Trent Merrin, while Beau Scott was yet to play a full series.

The Dragons won 10 of 11 games to start that year before hitting the Origin period. The ultimately won three of their last 11 before being bundled out of the finals in straight sets.

A heavy representative toll played no small part in the limp to the finish line according to Gasnier.

“When you go back to 2004-2005 and even 06, a lot of our guys who played Origin had played eight or nine Origins at that stage,” Gasnier told Kickoff this week.

“You look at 2011, we didn’t handle it that well. We got a lot of players in, debutants to, and that’s the big difference.

“There’s a difference between getting a lot of players in Origin that have played it a lot, and a lot of players that are playing their first series. You’re first series drains you physically and mentally like you’ve never been drained before.

“That’s main thing Mary [Paul McGregor] will want to handle because the only guy you could classify as having a lot of experience is Tyson Frizell.

“For a lot of the other guys it’ll be relatively new to them, if they are to get as many picked as people think.”

What also plays in the club’s favour is a relatively friendly draw. They will be one of eight teams with a bye next week and will have five days to recover ahead of their round 14 clash with the Bulldogs.

Origin II will be played on a standalone weekend for the first time this season, though they’ll play the Eels four days later, presumably with Gareth Widdop and James Graham backing from Denver Test duty with England.

They’ll have to go without their Origin contingent for their round 17 clash with Melbourne ahead of game three – the only time rep stars will be flat-out unavailable for selection – before playing the Tigers in Wollongong in round 18.

It’s a tough stretch no doubt, but manageable. The proof will ultimately be in the pudding, but the Dragons have certainly put themselves in a strong position, particularly if they can knock of Penrith for a 10-2 start to the season.

It would give McGregor the option of resting players, something that wasn’t a common occurrence in Gasnier’s day.

“Back then there wasn’t too much compensation from coaches,” Gasnier said.

“You were more judged on how you backed up rather than getting a rest but I think we’ve come a long way in that regard.

“If you’re up the top of the table you’ve got the luxury of resting players during the Origin period which makes a big difference.

“If they win on Saturday night, they could potentially be four points clear at the top of the ladder so that’s a good buffer to have. They’ve got the standalone weekend and the bye so I think the draw’s been good to them.

“Knowing Mary the way I do, he’ll have a back up plan to a back up plan to a back up plan. It’s a situation he’ll need to handle, but it’ll be well thought out no doubt.”

Klemmer cordner shoudnt get picked on form
Keary Mitchell and Roberts cant tackle.
Graham shoudnt get picked either and ferguson is hot and cold.

Agree , although Graham has never let us down on the big stage plus he has that valuable experience , but surely not at the expense of Simms .

As far as Ferguson is concerned the man simply does not give one enough confidence , particularly under those high balls that I am sure the Maroons will be putting up for him . Simply too risky and does not deserve a spot .

Jeffdragon, l work on the fact that we have a new coach with the will to start all over and try to get a winning mentality with a new bunch of players.

I do not understand why we would consider out of form players from a losing era...... and as you say, players that can’t tackle.

Whether JBD plays for us or whoever, he has the mungrel to make it.
Sims too is should be in it, possibly on the bench as an impact player.

Cordner just doesn’t cut it as a player or captain.

They were talking about Freddie making wholesale changes...... hope he doesn’t go soft and renege.

That is what I believed also OKB1 - that Freddy would be getting rid of the dead wood and as you say take the blues into a new era , one of winning . What has the hairs on the back of my neck dancing is Alexander's comment about Arron Woods - what he needs to do to be selected for the Blues squad - what the f@@k ? ?

The bloke should not be allowed to look at a blue sky let alone a Blue's Jersey ! Has he, Alexander been watching season 2018 or is his mind back in another year ? Unbluudybelievable !

Origin selection race shifts into overdrive
Dragons Den News
r0_0_4428_2765_w1200_h678_fmax.jpg

IN THE PICTURE: Ben Hunt and Paul Vaughan will be among a host of players pushing their final case for Origin selection on Saturday. Picture: AAP

CALL it a NSW possibles v probables. At least that’s how most fans are looking at Saturday’s top of the table clash between the Dragons and Panthers at Penrith Park.

While many tipped both sides to push for a top four finish this season, the Dragons have largely exceeded expectations in being standalone competition leaders after 11 rounds.

With a bye to follow next week, Paul McGregor’s men could shoot four points clear at the top of the ladder with a win on Saturday heading into what will be a demanding rep season.

With no less than 12 Origin hopefuls in action right under the nose of Blues coach Brad Fittler, it’s easy to forget there are two competition points on the line.

While the Origin audition may be the major talking point among fans, former Dragons and NSW centre Mark Gasnier expects both sides’ primary focus to be on that crucial two competition points.

“There wouldn’t be a happier man than Brad Fittler,” Gasnier, who’ll be part of Fox League’s coverage of the match, said.

“I’m sure he’ll be watching very closely to see how certain players handle the pressure in a big game, in a pressure situation, knowing they could potentially be picked to play Origin.

“He’ll be watching with interest but, I know when I played, you can’t get too far ahead of yourself so I don’t think the players will have that in their mind.

“They’ll know it’s going to be a very, very hard game.”

Gasnier was part of winning series in 2004 and 2005 – the former alongside Fittler – where in-form Sydney clubs dominated the Blues squad.

With the Dragons and Panthers running one and two, Gasnier believes Fittler’s squad for game one could see a return to that winning formula.

“As long as it’s relevant to the team, club combinations, when those teams are winning, do help,” Gasnier said.

“There’s just that natural comfort, particularly in defence. If you’re defending on an edge, there’s a comfort in having your [club] teammate beside you.

“Even when you go into camp, there’s a comfort in having your teammates there.

“It all helps and Freddy will be ecstatic that the Dragons and Panthers are one and two will potentially provide a big chunk of players.”

The Dragons fell short in their last top-of-the table showdown against the Warriors in round seven, and Gasnier said they’ll need to go up a gear to knock off the Panthers at home.

“I think it’ll be very physical and I expect the Panthers to throw a lot of line-speed at them,” Gasnier said.

“If you look at the two games the Dragons have lost to Warriors, and then again against Souths, they weren’t far off the pace.

“They weren’t far off at all, but the other team was really up for it because of how they’ve been going all year.

“This will be something similar. If the Dragons aren’t up another level with their intent and purpose, the Panthers will fancy their chances, particularly out at Penrith in front of a packed house.”

There is a story on Foxsports right now about Cordner and Greg Alexander's perspective on him. There is also a poll asking the readers who NSW should pick out of Cordner and Sims. Right now the poll is 62% picking Sims and 38% picking Cordner.

5 weeks ago I said that I would pick Sims ahead of Cordner, now many others are agreeing with me. I still expect Cordner to be picked and captain too.
Freddy has stated Boyd will be picked & captain

With Cordner now confirmed as captain I believe that means no Sims.

Vaughan and Frizell I believe will definitely be there. JDB on the bench and possibly Mccinnes, that’s the big decision between Cook or Mccinnes.

Interesting to note that Freddie indeed intends to have Cordner in his side. It was the only thing he gave away last night on the Footy Show. He stated that Gould's comments were more likely a prod to get Cordner firing. We'll see come Monday I guess. I would hazard a guess that he will be the NSW captain for experience alone.

Jesus, Gaz must be after a job at the club with this sort of dribble. Since when has Mary shown diversity in his thinking apart from Debellin at half ?

So Corner is in as captain. Given this indication of Freddy's thinking, what will the team be now based on current form and experience:
1. Tedesco
2. Ado Car
3. Turbo
4. Mitchell
5. Roberts.
6. Maloney
7. Cleary
8. Vaughan
9. McInnes
10. Fifita
11. Cordner
12. Frizell
13. De Belin

14. Klemmer
15. RCG
16. J Trbojevic
17. Peachey

Graham gave a strip penalty in game 2 on the 4th tackle which directly led to a QLD try.

He made multiple stupid mistakes in that game as well. Don’t rate him at that level.

Only thing he has over Sims is utility value, which is nullified if Peachys on the bench.

mobels - I believe that Simms should be in the starting line-up , with Graham , as you said for his utility value coming off the bench . There's no doubting in my mind or for that matter any of us which of the two has been playing the better footy and is more deserving of a NSW Jersey .
