I think we've got no option but to go back to Papps at the top and maybe it's time to just throw youth at the side and while it may mean 2-3 ugly years we may emerge with some hardened pros who can take us forward for the next generation of NZ cricket.

Take Hay, Flynn Todd and Ryder and throw them in at the deep end, we can't do any worse than the other underachievers we have at the moment.

Taylor just took a screamer to remove KP

Just been trying to think around the sides at the moment and who is opening for each side, Otago Redmond and ????, neither, Astle and Papps, only Papps at this stage, Bell and Woodcock, neither, Ingram and How, How only, Watling and ???, In a few years maybe, Jones and McIntosh, neither

do you guys reckon it would be worth opening with McCullum in the 2nd innings?? were gonna be chasing 500+ and Bell seems to be rubbish against the new ball and McCullum seems to have abit of momentum against englands newball bowlers.

imo were on a hiding to nothing... we will more than likely lose so why not... if he fails then no big deal... if he has one of his innings he could turn the game in our favour.

After McCullum's dismissal in the first innings? No.

He's going to have to find a way to play test cricket as I don't think he's going to be able to maintain what has been a pretty decent test batting record to this point playing the same style he has adopted in ODI's.

McCullum getting out playing an attacking shot was miles better than seeing Bell get out leaving a ball that pitches on middle....

I think they were just as bad as each other and put Sinclair in there as well. All were ridiculous shots (or non-shot in Bells instance). He tried to cut a ball that took out off stump, crazy stuff.

Well done to Andrew Strauss who has had a terrible 18 months,it's good to see him get his highest score hopefully he can continue and return to his pre Ashes 06 form.

to be blunt, Fleming's dismissal was a disgraceful shot too, but given the retirement etc and the fact that he was in the 60's rather than 6 little has been said.

We shouldn't worry about the 500+, we should try and bat the two days

I wouldn't go near Papps again, and Bell is out of form horribly now. I'd seriously take McIntosh, he's 28 and has made many big scores. Flynn and Hay should go to England too, and maybe one more. Bell, Sinclair and Elliott all look horribly out of their depth. Sinclair is the only one talented enough, but I think mentally he's just crumbled...

poms batting on this morning. kiwi commentators seem baffled by it.

obviously its to get strauss the double hundred and to keep the openers on edge for abit longer.

Strauss is gone for 177.... slogged one off patel into the air and straight into the hands of Bell.

no declaration from the poms yet...
