He'll need a wooden spoon to take his meds for the rest of the year after admitting to being caught using non-approved therapeutics. Once a cheat always a cheat.

A lot of well deserved vitriol has been directed at Coach Sane Flanagan for allowing this to occur under his direction. Gallen as Captain should have taken more of a mentorship role for his fellow players and advocated more scrutiny as to whether everything was above board.

Let's see what WADA do. They are looking into the matter now. The saga and penalties might be more than Captain Bonehead anticipated when he plead guilty.

Sharks skipper Gallen could be in line for captain of the year, lock of the year and representative player of the year at the Dally M Awards, which will be held (September 29) in grand final week. He is also in contention for the Brad Fittler Medal at the NSWRL awards night on September 10.

WTF?

Has a captain of a spoon winning side ever won captain of the year?
Has a player who has played only 9 games in a season ever been considered for a Player of the year Award? That's even disregarding the fact the Sam Burgess will win lock of the year quite easily IMO.

I notice that the article failed to mention that this drug ban also probably means that Gallen probably won't be the Australian of the Year.
Gallen won't win any Dally M medals. He wasn't even the best player in the Origin Series (Hayne & Farah were better imo).

As for Australian of the year, he has to be racially teased by a teenage girl to get that.

ASADA have really opened up a can of worms accepting that intention plays a role in the length of suspensions.

How difficult would it be to prove whether a player knew what they were taking or not? Surely this is now just a get out of jail free card for any player who can claim their innocence...

That deduction for unintentional use has been there for always. It can be even more if other sanctions are severe and there is clearly no blame. I don't mind it, it's the backdated suspension which is BS and not something I've heard of before, and the non stripping of rep caps and medals. That would never happen in athletics or swimming.

Amen to that, very weird decision. Next athlete caught will be raising this decision as a defence -opening a can of worms,

dumb comparison as usual

you can win Gold at one Olympics and still get to defend your title at the next Olympics if you fail a drug test in between

eg http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-05-13/efimova-given-16-month-doping-ban/5450850

comparing swimming and team sports like the NRL is just stupid

and you really need to listen to McDevitt explain why the bans were backdated

it wasn't the players fault

no shit sherlock

but that swimmer won Bronze at the 2012 Olympics and two Gold at 2013 world championships yet will still be able to compete in Rio

they get to keep all those medals too

they had a world record stripped but would they really care as they still have not missed one Olympic games?

And if any of the Sharks players had been banned for 12 or 24 months, they too would be able to compete at the end of their ban. As it is, they can now compete again after serving as little as 3 weeks. I fail to see how you are making any sort of point by suggesting that the Swimmer is able to compete again after sitting out for 18 months. As it is, the timing of the swimmers ban is such that it falls between Olympics. She simply got "lucky" with when she got caught.

As for keeping her medals, do you really think they should strip someone of their medals for periods where they have competed "clean"? I tend to agree with Perth Red in terms of stripping individual accolades during the period of their backdated "suspension". Despite your protestations, if historical samples are retested (with newer techniques) from prior Olympics and the athletes are found to have used PED, they will lose their medals and place in the record books.

as are the current and former Sharks players seeing most will only miss three weeks

and gong off articles that have come out it is highly likely they would have fought possible suspensions if it hadn't been an offer too good to refuse

I hardly think that the "timing" of the suspensions are in any way comparable given that one commenced when a drug test was failed (with 90% of the ban still to be served post suspension), whilst the Sharkies players only had to "serve" less than 10% of their total ban after the rest was artificially back dated.

And going off articles? I thought your automatic reaction is that all reporters are lying scum bags. Or is that only when it doesn't suit your agenda?

I would have been happy to see the Sharkies fight the ban. Whether they got off totally, or got suspended for longer, at least we would have been more likely to have come to a result based on fact, rather than one that has been artificially contrived to end a drawn out drama.

here is another athlete that was recently banned but had their suspension backdated for the exact same reason as the Sharks players

http://www.smh.com.au/sport/athleti...es-champion-daniela-roman-20140718-zulur.html

Despite the seriousness of the breaches, however, the bans of both athlete and coach have been significantly backdated – to June 13, 2013 – due to ASADA’s considerable delay in resolving proceedings.

Contentiously, Daniela Roman has continued competing and, as recently as March this year, posted a world junior qualifying standard time in the 100 metres hurdles. The result granted her automatic selection for Australia’s team at the IAAF junior world championships starting next week.

When ASADA and Athletics Australia finalised her sanction in May, however, the 18-year-old was deemed ineligible to compete until October this year.

In a written statement to Fairfax Media, ASADA attributed the backdating of Daniela Roman’s ban to “delays in the progression of the matter which were not attributable to the athlete”.
