That might hold true for the winner of a given competition, but over time these teams compete in numerous competitions and their achievements stack up.

Some competitions are just more competitive than others. Surely nobody would argue with that.

Firstly it’d be, just like you are doing now, the hierarchy of competitions is what would be argued.
Secondly it’s the need to rank them at all that I disagree with you. It’s never going to be apples and apples thus anyone who does just wants it to be argued.

I agree they’re good, but the competition is Mickey Mouse. The same reason I give a shit about the Socceroos but not the Kangaroos. The strength of the competition is definitely a factor. Maybe it isn’t for you, and that’s cool. Plenty of merkins get excited about Origin, with only two teams every year.

Why wouldn't you expect it from me? The fact is women's sport isn't elite because the best players (all men) aren't competing. But this is a separate issue, around the lack of opposition. That affects some men's sports as well. Probably every men's sport to a degree, outside of the (men's) football World Cup.

Except I already said I celebrate Matildas wins. I'd be stoked if they won the World Cup. But I'd be unable to not keep it in perspective. Likewise if the Eels won the NRL Telstra Premiership. I'd personally love it, but it's not as big as the UEFA Champions League, or even the EPL.

After the start of the game, about 20 members of the RBB left the active area to remove the club and A-League sanctioned TIFO's that they had erected around the stadium. Previously all approved and they were allowed to block stadium advertising, hence the need to remove them soon after. All was agreed to with stadium management, the club, security and the RBB before the game. No issues.


When these 20 members returned to the active safe-standing area after removing the TIFO's, they were refused entry by the fine members of the NSW constabulary, even though they had valid tickets and had been in the same area
beforehand.
The club had arranged this with security previously, yet our fine establishment decided it wasn't going to happen.
For obvious reasons, some of the RBB members took exception to this, and that is when some trouble started.
Several members were arrested or removed. Word got back to the remainder of the RBB, and they walked out in protest support of their comrades.

The Wanderers who sanctioned all this previously have released a thinly veiled statement this afternoon. Clearly, club management have copped some heat today.

I have spoken to several ESFC fans today and they all agreed that the amount of policing last night was ridiculous. They also agreed that it only makes things worse with their intimidatory approach.
The Public Order and Riot Squad are the major problem.
There would have been no issues last night if these 20 fans had just been allowed to return to their ticketed area, as had already been arranged through the proper channels.

"Trouble started" - so this is where imo the combined brain power of the RBB seems to start to fail them (and the team they "actively" support). Why start trouble, instead of negotiate calmly, enlisting the calm support of the security approvers and/or representatives of the club if they had endorsed it all?

And I'd suggest the arrests and removals were totally unnecessary... but pretty much totally on those RBB members and the reactions they had that pit themselves in a situation to be arrested or removed?

Almost as bad as RTBU members holding fast for safety upgrades to cheap foreign-built trains purchased without effective consultation.... but I digress.

The above is all the more reason you'll never see me patronise a Wanderers/A-League game.

According to media reports, a NSW Police statement was issued....

NSW Police released a statement saying spectators had earlier gathered at Prince Alfred Park and marched to the stadium, during which several flares were ignited and two people were refused entry.

Police had then assisted security at approximately 8pm after a fight broke out on the concourse area of the stadium. There were no reported injuries.

A 37-year-old man was ejected and issued with a ban notice and the RBB had walked out in support of him.

"As a result of the police operation, 14 people were ejected, six of which were issued banning notices," said the police statement.

"Two people were issued an infringement notice, one for offensive behaviour and a second for igniting a flare just before full-time.

"Inquiries continue with further action expected in relation to the possession and igniting of flares before and during the match."

However, I disagree with them. Our premierships are not meaningless, they are just not as meaningful as we'd like to think. Rugby league was at a low point in the early eighties. The fact the Panthers have won three straight indicates that the league is currently at something of a weak point as well. The NRL has a handful of super clubs (Penrith, Easts, Melbourne, Brisbane) and three of those have been in a hole for the past three years (longer for Brisbane), meaning Penrith haven't had much competition. I'd say our only real competition from '81 to '86 was the Bulldogs. We had the entire backline (apart from fullback) in one of the Origin games ffs. How were we able to keep that team together? I'd say the answer to that is pokies. By the late eighties the game was professionalising and our poker machine advantage was being eroded by more professional outfits getting the big end of town on board.
