Yeah lets bring him back. Lets get Tony Zappia back as well. Lets just open the door to every dickhead coz we're all upset at losing. Hell I want to win just as much as anyone here but I absolutely cannot see the point in bringing people back here who have so many problems. I want to move forward not backwards!
Mate, he had his problems no one is perfect.

This club better have a clean out at the end of the season.
We have no halfback. Mortimer is still another year or so away from finding his feet.
The talent and options tim can bring will be awesome for us. Him at 7 kk at 6 and feleti at 13, poore and moimoi getting us in good field position then timmys awesome short kicking game and sensational cut out balls will make inu look like the greatest winger ever.

Sure he has had his problems, but his talent is to good to ignore. Just my oppinion

thats cool mate, I respect your opinion. They say absence makes the heart grow fonder and I just wonder if people have forgotten all the bullsh*t that went on with TS. He really wasn't playing good footy for a while before he left us and the constant bad press and stupid incidents seemed to be an everyday occurence. I agree with you 100% that a massive cleanout is needed but I'm not sold on the idea of TS coming back.

Sorry but that's utter crap. Tim Smith had a very good season in 2007 and barely played in 2008.

If he was playing for us last night instead of Robson we win the game. It's that simple.

Agreed. We really lacked creativity last night and a halfback of Tim's skills would have converted those opportunities into points and pressure for the Tigers.

TS is very keen to come back to the NRL and he could come at just the right price for a team looking for an established and experienced halfback but not too much money left ;-)

Meanwhile, Tim Smith's Wigan went down to the last placed Celtic Crusaders on the weekend, in what was the Welsh club's first home Super League win...

Seems on current form (not 2005 rose-coloured glasses form) he's not doing much better than what we've already got - and he's playing five-eighth.

Match Report

Wigan Warriors were defeated 22-16 against Celtic Crusaders at the Brewery Field on Saturday night as the Crusaders recorded only their second win of the season and their first on home soil.

Tries either side of half time opened up a 16-6 Celtic advantage before touchdowns from Phelps and Roberts levelled it at 16 all before Peter Luptons second try of the game five minutes from the end sealed the win for the home side.

Celtic gave their all and deserved something from the game as Wigan battled in spells but never really showed the form they had shown in the last two weeks which had seen them beat Salford twice and move into the top 8.

Wigan Warriors were without Gareth Hock and Sam Tomkins who were away on International duty with England. George Carmont missed out with a shoulder injury while skipper Sean O’Loughlin was also sidelined with a knee injury which also forced him out of the England 19.

Shaun Ainscough was recalled on the left wing after missing the back to back home wins over Salford. Elsewhere, Phil Bailey returned, Joel Tomkins switched to loose forward with Hansen also starting. In the absence of O’Loughlin, Thomas Leuluai took over the Captain’s duties. On the bench for the first time in Super League was Mark Flanagan who has impressed in the Reserves.

The Warriors looked for an early breakthrough, Riddell finding room down the left through a gap, Tim Smith with a high lofted kick deep inside the Celtic half with just 5 minutes on the clock but the home defence held firm.

It was the home side that opened the scoring on 15 minutes, Lennon with the break, he had Withers and then Van Dijk in support and the scrum half crossed for the try. Lennon added the extras from underneath the posts, 6-0.

The cherry and whites hit back with a fortunate try on 21 minutes, Leuluai with a short kick which fell kindly for Harrison Hansen to touch down unopposed. Richards goal squared the game up at 6-6.

Wigan thought they had got their second try on 30 minutes, Leuluai and Phelps combining as they looked to send in Ainscough out wide but good cover defence from the home side put the winger in touch.

Celtic reacted and went straight down the other end for their second try of the night. Van Dijk with a cross field kick into acres of space, Peter Lupton picking up the loose ball to cross for the try. Lennon’s conversion made it 12-6 to the home side.

That remained the score until the half time interval.

Wigan almost capitalised in the opening couple of minutes after the break as Leuluai put a grubber kick in. Celtic allowed the ball to bounce thinking it had gone dead, Ainscough close to getting a touch before the danger was averted.

At the other end on 53 minutes, Celtic grabbed their third try, Mark Dalle Cort with the four points as the home side kept the ball alive. This time the extras were missed, 16-6 but Wigan with a task on their hands now.

The Warriors needed the next score and they got it, Cameron Phelps scoring from a quick pass from the scrum base out wide. Richards goal brought it back to 16-12.

The try brought the Warriors to life and on 68 minutes Wigan were in again. This time Roberts with the try after a clever dummy by Smith sent Gleeson into space and he found Roberts on his shoulder to level the game. Richards missed the goal, 16-16. All of a sudden it was game on.

But with just five minutes left a mistake by Paleaaesina as he lost the ball close to his own try line proved decisive. This allowed Celtic possession and it was Lupton who was able to elude the tackle of Gleeson to sneak in for the try, his second, on 75 minutes. Lennon’s goal made it 22-16.

There was no way back for Wigan and it was the home side that picked up the two Super League points.

I'm impressed that you can tell Tim Smith isn't doing much better than Robson based on current form from just reading an article. Also way to ignore the 2 man of the match performances he received this season.
Also why only mention 2005 form? What about 2007?

Thanks, it's a good skill.... the point being that Tim should be killing the ESL consistently, if he's to have the form that would fare better in the NRL than he did in his four games last year.

Why not mention 2007... because his form in 2005 was so much better?

It would want to be - Tim's probably on about four times as much salary once you do the conversion.

The impression I'm getting Bartman is that you are making your judgments based on your personal dislike for Tim Smith rather than his playing ability.

I've never met him... have no real opinion on him either way.

I (like others) just don't think he was the total package as a half back... and I'm judging his NRL-readiness on his most recent NRL games, which were very very poor before he himself sought a release from it all.

He had a great kicking and passing game and set up tries with regular monotony. I don't know what more you want from a halfback? So he didn't run the ball enough? Not every player can be perfect in every area. Look at Thurston and Lockyers defence.

Also I hardly think the handful of games he played in 2008 are reflective of his ability.

Fair enough.

I haven't been swept up in this Albert Kelly either, so I guess you could say I look for some defensive ability in my halfbacks, to balance the attacking flair? Sterling had it... and most of the great halves could tackle. I'm not convinced Tim really can, and he needed to be hidden and covered in the backline.

If you can't tackle as a half, then you better be a world beater with your attacking flair... and Tim while talented (and after a great debut year) simply didn't achieve that level and balance consistently enough, imo.

But this place would be boring if we all had the same opinions...
