lol@MITS and his Climate Change crap.

1) Our emissions will rise in the future so whatever spin the alarmists put on it, the Carbon Tax is a failure and a scam.

2) Even forgetting point 1), we're aiming to reduce our emissions by 5% (of the 1.4% of anthropogenic carbon in the atmosphere). MASSIVE and TOTALLY worth taxing billions of dollars for!!!

3) It's a socialist redistribution of wealth and nothing more.

Of the approximate 50ppm rise that can be attributed to anthropegenic causes since 1750, our "goal" would look to slice off ~0.05ppm - and we're being taxed for this? When we're not actually achieving it because our emissions will rise?

What a load of absolute crap!

A Majority voted in Kevin, and wanted him to ratify the Kyoto Protocol. Kyoto includes the ability to reduce our GHG by "Flexible Mechanism" which is where International Carbon Trading comes from and this price readies Australia for it and should see us reach our Kyoto goals.

Except that while you can force companies to pay tax, you can't force them to conduct business in your country, and when you try and screw them because the voters told you that 'big business' are the ones who should foot the bill, big business takes most of their investment offshore to places where it's cheaper to operate.

This is how Wayne Swan was ambushed and flogged by lower than expected tax revenue.

You just can't force people to invest in your country. If you don't offer favourable conditions they will take their money elsewhere.

I don't even read nospam46 so I have NFI what is going on. I think the carbon price stinks for the increasingly struggling manufacturing industry but I really want to know who that Etu merkin is.

The last 7 words of your first sentence sums it up enough for me .( I'm classing NFI as a word just for the demonstration )

Except you can't generate Power for Australians off Australian shores. Nor can you mine Australian Minerals off Australian shores.

No the Surplus was eaten by the states and the investment in infrastructure (in this country) clause.

You can buy power for Australians from overseas. Plenty of countries find it cheaper than producing their own.

And you don't have to mine Australian minerals at all. There's plenty of minerals in the ground all over the world. If ours are too expensive to get out of the ground they will be too expensive to sell on the world market. That would defeat the purpose of mining them in the first place.

Swanny didn't even see that coming hey?

My figures are solid, MITS.

50ppm = 0.005% of the atmosphere.

Of that, Australia has contributed 1.4% = <1ppm = 0.0007%.

We're seeking a reduction of 5% of our 1.4% = 35ppt = 0.000035% of the atmosphere.

There will be absolutely ZERO effect from our actions (and that's assuming anthropogenic carbon emissions even have any significant effect at all).

Yep, let's tax us billions for it!

It's wealth redistribution, watermelon style!
