I think our biggest problem has been defence - Papali'i would not have helped us there.

Agree, up the middle. Vs Broncos Reg missed 5 as did Hodgo. Not only that, it’s the slow markers and whatever you call it when Reg, Jnr, Emu and Hodgo are slowly running back to the line with their backs to the attack. Our line speed is poor. Their play the ball speed is fast. We are in our heels instead of our toes.

Discussed extensively elsewhere. unsuccessful
Actually it was originally raised by Chipmunk for discussion in this very thread.

Have only seen one attempted but unsuccessful argument posted against anything contained in the analysis...

The loss of Papallii (along with a host of others) that went inadequately replaced - such that we still have empty roster spots and apparent cap money to spare - has clearly been a contributing factor to our shitdom this year.

We don't play BDB defense very well so we should be out there trying to make plays from marker for example. I'd pick specialist marker defenders whose job it is to go out there and make big plays. TFL or TF less than 3m or whatever.

Use the TFL on first few tackles. Switch to SRS on the final two. Only in red zone.
When further out I'd use a FSS defense tactics with advanced compression early but push the WDO on the 4th when you know they'll move the ball. It's very simple.

I’d use markers like linebackers. See ball, get ball. I’d have them in a 3 point stance where possible. Make them remember the day they played the titans.

Our defensive style has changed since 2016 & 2017. Where we were known to rush out of the line and try bash the opposition with our line speed.

BA has stated numerous times he wanted the discipline improved after being the most penalised side in 2018 so we have gone the other way.

I feel we are probably too passive at times. But I thinks it's just a by product of BA not wanting to give away penalties. So we have pushed the balance the other way.

We lost Oregan and Marata coming off the bench. You reckon that we’d be a different side in 2023 if they were still here OR we recruited equivalent middles ? Hopgood and to a lesser extent Murchie and Emu (ok the jury is out) have potential but let’s face it, they rank 3/10 vs last year’s solid 7 or 8/10 for Oregan and Marata off the bench. Even when we lost one of our bookends, one of those woukd come in and we’d hardly miss a beat.

Yep the rules of our game prefer conservative defense (bend don’t break) and conservative attack. It’s a stupid quirk of our game.
