That’s the problem, we need a genuine second tier comp/comps not the current half breed pseudo reserve grade no one cares about. There will only ever be so many nrl clubs and that will leave large population areas without a local club to watch at a decent level. A decent secon$ tier played in 7-10k grounds with decent facilities and tv coverage wou,d do a lot more to grow the game than another brisbane nrl club. Give fans in gosford, Newtown, cairns, Ipswich, Redcliffe, perth, Wellington, png, Fiji, Illawarra, Sunshine Coast, Adelaide, etc etc a club to follow in a meaningful comp.

Again with the other sports. Comparing apples and oranges. In NSW Cup especially the sides mirror the NRL. So people will bring their love or hate of a team down. A genuine 2nd tier comp is different

Say Panthers play Mounties on Sat night. Outside of the 2 fan bases who is going to care for it? A League FTA and now Super Rugby shows how well inferior comps work on FTA.

QLD Cup have more of a chance but many reasons despite playing night games it isn't on TV.

Biggest one being the suburban grounds used don't have the facilites for night broadcasts. Some barely are fit for day time coverage.

The main reason is the lack of genuine interest from casual viewers. Make the costs not worth it

The games televised on Fox this year. Include Wagga, Bathurst and Dubbo but the equipment is there for NRL anyway.

That is the better way to get exposure for the comp while keeping costs down

QLD Cup is on TV. One game a week. Channel 9. People watch it in QLD, even if it doesn't involve there teams. Can't see why it wouldn't happen in NSW. Just something to watch before the main game. Just about scheduling it at the right time.

As for NSWRL/QRL night games. Most grounds do have the right lighting. That said, if it's about costs. You just nominate 2-3 grounds that team if chosen to be on TV, have to play at that ground. Not really a big deal.

You will find the Presidents Cup is heading in that direction now

President's Cup isn't what it was last year - this year it's a small playoff series at the end of three different competitions in different parts of the state.

Well it was a Dragons home game so wouldn't of been at Henson
It’s still a stark example of the point that there’s little to no interest in the second grade from your average NRL fan.

The Jet’s fan base isn’t going to show up for openers before Sharks games played at Kogarah either, so it’s only a matter of time before the Sharks are forced to drop their affiliation with them and run their own team, at which point the independent clubs are f**ked and the game is worse for it.

We need an NRL premiership! It could be something that trumps AFL who will never be able to run a second division comp due to their strong state comps.

14 team comp of 5 NSW, 5 Qlnd and 4 national clubs funded by NRL, Games of the week on FTA TV and free streaming of other games via the NRL website. Give areas who cant get into NRL (inc regional), historic clubs who are no longer in NRL, clubs with ambition to be in NRL one day etc something meaningful to play. Will also require a NRL reserve grade but we've pretty much got that anyway. Also gives NRL retiring or discarded players somewhere to keep earning some coin and not have to leave the game. Aim for a crowd avg around 3k, min stadium standards, salary cap of $2mill etc and grow it from there. There's three clubs vying for one Brisbane NRL spot at moment, that will leave two that could be in a better national comp than the Qlnd cup. You've got places like Perth, Gosford, Bears, Newtown, Redcliffe, Sunshine Coast etc who have the facilities and fanbases to be vibrant entities in a genuine second division.

Ideally you will expand the comp. to have Fiji rather than the 3rd tier they play in
Victoria has a side in U/21's

So ideally add those 2. Maybe a few country sides

To do that you need exposure and cash. So moving a few choice games helps that then all good.

This season there is a Thurs night stand alone game on Fox, games in Wagga, Bathurst and Dubbo.

Mounties are on TV this week only because of the ground change but the sponsors would love it.

So for the moment it is needed.

Your right about one thing

It needs 2 answers

1 - NRL Reserve Grade
2 - 2nd Tier structure

Or you could base it around Queensland, a second around NSW and a third in NZ to save costs

Adding a travel budget to regional teams who have to travel more than 500km

You'd save on travel but would have a lot more clubs in it meaning a lot more in NRL grants. It'd probably be cheaper for the NRl to cover accommodation and travel for a 12-14 club national comp. than pay 20-26 clubs grants. I do agree though NZ needs it own decent second tier comp investment. You could then have the end of year challenge game between the Oz and NZ premiers.

For fun: (no affiliations with NRL clubs)

1. NS Bears
2. Newtown Jets
3. CC somethings
4. Mounties
5. Wentworth
6. Redcliffe Dolphins
7. Ipswich jets
8. Sunshine Coast Falcons
9. Souths Logan Magpies
10. PNG Hunters
11. Fiji cyclones (though may be better in NZ comp)
12. WC Pirates

You need sponsors on board.

That is why I can get on board with games as curtain raisers.

On attendance it would be nice if the League could get the numbers of how many people check in with QR code.

Have some hard data when comparing if this is a success or not.

I’m not sure if it’s a coincidence, but there was talk of a NZ/Fiji team called the Cyclones based in southern NZ

Probably too big and widespread to fund properly. I'm thinking a $5mill grant and covering of travel etc. For a 14 team comp you'd be looking at around $100mill a year. Not small bikkies by any stretch but if the NRL can close that $250mill revenue gap on AFL then it would be a good long term investment for the game to have a second professional tier.
