So with Hughes back in the test side, I ask the original question

When do we drop him now?

If he fails during the SL series? Do we give him the SL series and the Indian series?

We have seen that great form in our Shield competition does not necessarily translate in test cricket eg Punter
No excuses for Hughes though against a popgun attack of SL, and no bouncing decks in India, am expecting him to take this by the throat and reall kill it. We need some stability at no3, and hopefuly he can bring it for years to come. He needs to be at the top of his game for the ashes series

If any of these blokes struggle against Sri Lanka than they need to go. In Australain conditions, against this Sri Lankan attack if any of the Aussie batsmen don't fill their boots than they need to go.

If you can't score runs in this series, you won't score runs in India and England.

He's a certainty for the Tests against Sri Lanka and India. Then you compare what he (and the rest of the team) has done in those Tests to the 1st class results of players challenging for the Test team.

From all that you pick a squad to go to the Ashes. I think he'll be in the Ashes squad for sure, whether he is a lock for the first XI or not depends on what he does in the next 2 series.

If anyone fails against trundlers like Kulasakera and Welagedara then they need to go.

The Sri Lankan pace attack would be like if ours was James Hopes, Andrew McDonald and Ian Harvey. There's not alot to it but stump-to-stump mediums.

He'll get at least one big score. He already has a century against Sri Lanka and that was in Sri Lanka where they'd be more effective.

Like Khawaja and Hussey who also failed?

We got 400 odd in 1 test but in the other we got just 136 and 233. Everyone but Warner failed in that Test. To call them trundlers is disrespectful after what they did to our entire batting lineup last year.

Well Hughes was a big success today.

He is a fighter, he now has the ability to be patient and get through tough stretches and then cash in when the bowlers start wavering.

There's a lot to like and if he does well between now and into the Ashes I could see them start grooming him for the captaincy.

If 5 years from now Pup retires and Hughes has played 70 tests with 6000 runs at 50 or so I could see him being the next captain. By then he'll be our most experienced batsman. I think he is Clarkes heir.

And before the haters laugh at that, when Clarke was 24 some would have laughed at the idea of him being captain. But they also would have laughed at the idea of him scoring 1400 and 4 double centuries in a year.

Mark my words, Clarke to retire in about 2017, the then 70 test successful veteran Phil Hughes to take over.

I think Warner will be captain before Hughes. Wasn't that long ago he was being considered for the T20 captaincy.

I said IF he does well between now and the ashes.

So after SL it's 4 in India. 5 in England and then 5 here against England. If at the end of that he's scored runs in that period, is firmly established at #3, has played 34 tests at the age of 25, has about 2000 Test runs and looks set to be around a long time I think he becomes the guy they begin grooming for the job.

Warner isn't a captain. He just doesn't have the right style about him. He's like Hayden. Hayden was a great batsman and around for a long time but he was never in the conversation for captain because he just didn't have the right style.

In terms of style and being that sort of gritty street fighter type, he's a lot more in the Ponting and Waugh mold than Warner.

Warner is flashy, he's bright lights, he's Hollywood. He's not a fighter.

Martin. 200+ test wickets at around 30 are hardly the numbers of a trundler.

Should I add Martin to the list with Graeme Swann of really good bowlers that you inexplicably think are rubbish?

Neither Warner or Hughes are captaincy material. Warner is as dumb as a chimp and has far too abrasive a personality to be a leader. A great team man and possibly a VC but not a captain.

Hughes doesn't have the right personality either. The fact that he has to work so hard on getting his game right every innings rules him out for mine, as well as the fact he seems the quiet type.

There is a definite leadership vacuum below Clarke. The fact that a pretty boy with a record like The Struggler is next in line is evidence enough of that. The best candidate out of anyone who has represented Australia recently is Khawaja who is intelligent, by all accounts very popular with his fellow players and has a good cricket brain.
