8ball all the facts in those two quotes are 100% right. My mistake was believing that the selectors are not geniused enough to drop someone one test after making a world record partnership and while being the leading run scorer on the tour and averaging 62 on the tour.

They are only facts that are 100% right if Hughes gets selected tomorrow, otherwise its another fail prediction in your long and distinguished history.

The world record partnership was for the 11th wicket, not one that required a partnership of 300 runs, furthermore, he was outscored by the number 11 batsman.

Crawley is such a wanker

if the ground was booked then ANZ should not have accepted the Dogs game

it wasn't and they did so it is all ANZ's fault

Funny thing was Agar looked the top order bat and Hughes looked like the number 11.

Hughes is the one likely to make way according to the Cricinfo preview.

Yep, its down to Smith

If Smith is fit, Hughes is dropped.

Warner to come into the middle order

if you make 74 different predictions, one of them is bound to be right.

And in his mind, that makes him a genius and full of knowledge, because he predicted it.

However it just makes him a mindless gimp who doesn't know his own shit from the hubble space station

So if Smith is fit and Hughes gets dropped we may need to start another poll about whether he will ever play test cricket again. I say no. Aust batsmen rarely (if ever?) comeback after being dropped twice. I see a Bevan-like future as a one day specialist.

I can't see that happening, because who do we replace him with?

Bev scored a bajillion first class runs and couldn't get a look, sure. But that was in a world that contained Martyn, Katich, Hussey, Hodge, Love, etc.

Hughes will be back simply because noone else has put their hand up nor looks likely to. Maddinson and Doolan are the next best but can you say definitively they're better than Hughes?

If Hughes is dropped won't this be the third time he will have been axed fm the side after being dropped after the 2009 ashes then recalled during the 2010-11 ashes and playing through until the the Sri Lankan or South African tours of 2011 before being dropped again and then his current stint. It's hard to see any batsmen coming back from tht considering all those stint were at least 5-6 or more test matches, it's not like he was called in as injury cover and was always going to be replaced rather he was selected as a long term member of the side during those stints.

Whilst I agree with the premise of that argument, my point still stands - who do we replace him with?

It's easy to say Burns, Maddinson or Doolan. But if they start the shield season with sub-30 scores and Hughes whacks a ton or two for SA then I find it hard to believe they'll include one of them ahead of him.

We have to accept that we're in the same position as England were in 15 years ago. How many times did they recall Ramprakash, Hick, Knight, Crawley, etc. despite the fact they were proven failures at test level? When the cupboard is bare you don't have much choice.

Incidently this couples in nicely with my earlier rants about needing to play more FC cricket. We have no idea how good someone like Kurtis Patterson actually is because he played only one FC match then had to make way for a senior player. That was two full seasons ago. Any Pom who made 150 on debut like he did would have played 25+ FC matches by now and they'd know if he was the goods or not. We have no clue as to whether or not he is.
