I dunno … how much of the $300 Billion on 11 submarines is going to be spent ?

This is absolute chickenfeed in comparison and probably has more beneficial outcomes for Aust security

Hundreds of millions to help ukraine which is really helping to fund an American / nato proxy war vs Russia

250 million for a stadium with one tenant when Sydney clubs get refused

Turn it up …

I have said numerous times I would prefer them to expand elsewhere…and that any sport (let alone the NRL ) should not be involved in geopolitical matters ..

I just think some of the negative takes are over the top… particularly when it comes to the “ethical “ arguments, when it’s the PNG Govt asking for this …

Nailed my position exactly,

IF and a big IF PNG is the next in, There will be some flow on to the general public. That point some on here are missing.

I still think a Pacific side based out of Sydney or Brisbane is a better option but that is not to say this PNG setup can't work

That's a shit show, yes. But at least it has bipartisan support and can be sold as having some tangible benefit. The Tas Stadium (which has been a political disaster and may not even happen) can at least be sold as jobs etc.

This has no tangible benefit to everyday Australians, and is of spurious benefit in repelling the "red scare" anyway.

What "flow on" to the general public does a sports team in another country have?

Helping keep Chinese bases out of PNG for less than 1 percent of the cost, will have way more benefits to Aust security than 11 nuclear submarines that Aust won’t really be able to maintain themselves …

I wouldnt be surprised if this issue does have bipartisan support … it won’t even happen otherwise as the Greens and other minorities won’t pass it

You and I, and everyone else, knows this won't keep the Chinese from doing anything.

What "flow on" to the general public does a sports team in another country have?

The juniors won't be based in Cairns you gimp

They came to tour Penrith's setup.

We have Dubbo, Bathurst, Forbes run out of a school.

Bring that same setup to PNG, You get a new building or 2 in the school.

Sydney clubs house interstate players, something similar applies here

They also get Upwards of $10k Australian, That exceeds what they get from leaving school early.

That then flows in more kids being educated, More at Uni means more business for cafes and restuarants.

As does hosting 6 games then they normally would, As a result employs more locals.

So why you won't fix the country as whole you can lift some standards and hopefully down the track you have 40% graduating year 10 instead of 20% and so

Say it was to happen, at best it's a token effort that would have little to no impact on China's influence, power and financial might.
According to you…

This is seemingly an important diplomatic issue for our nearest neighbours PNG to the extent that they have requested Aust Govt assistance with making this happen…

I can’t see the future, but this might strengthen ties between our countries and help them stay on our side of the fence in the inevitable regional dispute to come between the US and China…

if the Aust Gov didnt think this was worthwhile … then why are they bothering with this?

It’s a shitshow of an issue …. I doubt the NRL or the Aust Govt really wants this to happen..

Why is this the NRLs issue?

your question was actually the dumbest thing I have read here this week …and that’s saying a lot
You know what’s funny is I don’t think you were even strongly behind this bid originally

you were asking some (valid) questions about the bid

you just seem to have accepted the reality of the situation

your question was actually the dumbest thing I have read here this week …and that’s saying s lot.,.

You wrote that the PNG govt wants an NRL team and that's why we should give it money for that.

The question is, do we give them money for something just because they ask for it? Or do we actually consider whether the money is spent on something it should be.

I took it to the extreme to make the point that your "we should give it to them because they asked for it" is a dumb argument.

Do you honestly think your question was a reasonable interpretation of my original point?

Out of all the things I have typed this morning … that’s the one extreme take you want to make ?

im not behind it !

I reckon it will be trouble …

But I also don’t like some of the negative takes about it…especially the ones arguing from an “ethical” position …

Well you've said it multiple times now, including this one where you say how they want to utilise the money we give them has no impact on us, so yes I do think it is reasonable to interpret your post as "if they ask for it, we should just give it to them"

Well take it up with the PNG govt then who are the ones driving this …we don’t live there so how they want the money to be utilised is not going to impact on us …

Whether we think it to be realistic goal or not … this is the price that they have asked for to keep the Chinese away …

So again, if they ask for money for drugs and hookers, and in return say that they will reject China, should we give it to them?

Why is this the NRLs issue?

It isn't.

The 9th game is the same value no matter where it is.

The fact those points I raised are valid is why both governments want to be involved.

NRL does want to be the top sport in the Pacific, so that part helps the NRL
