I have said numerous times I would prefer them to expand elsewhere…and that any sport (let alone the NRL ) should not be involved in geopolitical matters ..

I just think some of the negative takes are over the top… particularly when it comes to the “ethical “ arguments, when it’s the PNG Govt asking for this …

Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister James Marape has confirmed reports his eldest son is one of five men arrested in relation to a suitcase found with $US440,000 at a domestic airport in the Hela province.

I’ve lived in Asia and travelled to about 80 countries … ( not PNG admittedly )…so I’m not exactly a shrinking violet about the realties you mention .

Although I note we have given PNG billions already .. the NRL thing is a drop in the ocean comparatively …yet this will be what the haters want to focus on …

There is no facilities in Cairns capable of holding anything more then a one off NRL game.

NQ is essentially two cities, Cairns and Townsville. The population outside that is very small.

Townsville is centrally located in NQ and has the best stadium in regional Australia.

How many times do I have to repeat this? Are Southerns just wilfully ignorant?

Mackay is 4 hours south and staunch Cowboys territory.
North Queensland is North Queensland... anywhere North of Rockhampton is considered North Queensland

Instead of foreign aid which can be quite opaque in how it is delivered but has the stressed or outlined positive goal of funding hospitals, education we now have clearly stated money just for a football side. That will clearly meet opposition from some sections of the public - that is just common sense.

I’m just making a point that allegations made by others over PNG corruption should not just apply to the NRL money … you say there should be tougher regulations for aid money … but with respect we don’t really know how this money is spent do we .. just as we don’t know what the outcome of the NRL money will be

I don’t see too many Aussies worrying about corruption in respect of that money … I wonder why?? .it solves an “inconvenience” for us….so no need to look too closely as to where the money is going

Afl got money for the stadium in Tasmania

soccer has had hundreds of millions spent on it

league is the one sport that has had hardly any govt handouts

If png doesn’t get funded due to politics then so does the 19th afl team
