The 2024 Digicel ExxonMobil Cup Football Conference today saw the Head Coaches of the 12 clubs come together and work closely with Joe Grima, Manager of High-Performance Coaching.
Following a major financial investment by Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) and PNG National Rugby League Competition (PNG NRLC) to improve coaching, the coaches spent time learning to use the game analysis program, Fairplay, which will allow them to improve their players through footage of the matches and training.
Tomorrow the coaches will work on standard setting and live coaching as they take in the Hunters interclub match as part of Day 4.

Day 4 of the 2024 Digicel ExxonMobil Cup Football Conference was the busiest with our head coaches and our sport medical trainers participating in education and development courses, culminating observing the Hunter in-club trial at the National Football Stasdium in Port Moresby.
Tomorrow will see the sport medical trainers undertake their second day of training, where they will receive education from NRL instructor, Matthew Harrison, of AFS Group.

5 February 2024
For immediate release
SUCCESSFUL 2024 DIGICEL EXXONMOBIL CUP FOOTBALL CONFERENCE
The 2024 Digicel ExxonMobil Cup Football Conference successfully ended yesterday in Port Moresby with an intense two days of NRL education and assessment delivered by Matt Harrison of AFS Group, which resulted in the candidates receiving the first ever Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNG RFL) Sports Medical Trainer accreditation.
This demonstrates the importance of game administration and our clubs’ commitment to players’ safety and their wellbeing.
The conference opened with Franchise Managers participating in a two-day workshop focusing on commercial opportunities, financial reporting, shared standards setting, compliance, governance, player safety and player welfare and policy improvements.
The Head Coaches Conference from February 2nd - 3rd was facilitated by Joe Grima, Manager of High-Performance Coaching, to educate coaches on how to utilize technical and tactical coaching, the game analysis system, standard setting, pathway development and live coaching which included observing the Hunters’ interclub trial match on Saturday.
“I am really pleased that the recent two-day Digicel ExxonMobil Cup coaching workshop was highly successful, with enthusiastic engagement from our coaching staff. The provided materials, coupled with follow-up opportunities, promise a lasting impact on the PNG coaching program. Our coaches' commitment reflects a dedication to continuous improvement within our game in PNG, especially pleasing if we become the NRL 18th Team,” Grima said.
The purposefully designed conference provided the clubs with the greatest opportunities to prepare for the 2024 season and encourage club professionalism.
Mr Tony Archer, Competition Governance Manager, indicated, “This conference is a demonstration of the importance and investment that the game is making in driving club professionalism in our competition to improve the standards. This is the first step in ensuring that we work closely with our clubs, develop the skills and opportunities for all within the game. We place players’ safety, coach development, and strong franchises at the forefront of our ambition to achieve club professionalism in our Digicel ExxonMobil Cup competition in 2024. Our clubs have been provided with education and tools that are equivalent to the NRL.”
Mr Stanley Hondina, CEO of PNGRFL, said, “PNGRFL is constantly striving to improve the standards of the game across the country. This conference is a part of how we provide opportunities for those in rugby league to improve as coaches and managers, but also as people. We are focused on family and the community, that we will provide our players a safe environment through training. The large infrastructure investment in game analysis, medical infrastructure and improving the sustainability and strength of our clubs links directly with our strategic objectives.”

The 2024 Digicel ExxonMobil Cup Referees preseason continued for the Port Moresby based officials which saw them participate for the first time in the QRL Statewide Community Referees Back to Basics education session on the weekend.
Entering their fourth week of preseason training, this was a unique opportunity to continue their upskilling and development learning from the best NRL and QRL referees.
This is part of the most intense preseason training program ever undertaken by the Digicel ExxonMobil Cup referees.

Queensland Cup has its own streaming service.

It went broke 6 months ago because it was totally unprofitable and now the QRL have lost money

I thought you guys were fans of League? You seem to have no idea about current events.

Im suggesting that if digicell cup was brought up to a decent FT standard in decent facilities in front of decent crowds then Fox would show it. Production etc could be done by PNG tv or NRL itself. Again this is where money would be better spent to improve Rl in PNG and, PNG generally.

I remember we used to get French RL way back in the early 90's on uk tv. It was pretty small stuff but great late night viewing with Alex Murphy commentating. no reason a decent PNG comp couldnt be shown on Kayo in years to come. I mean theyve got hot dog eating on there right now!
You can't compare France, one of the world's biggest economies to PNG.

This pipedream of yours is Decades away, not years away.

Even if it was produced locally, do you really think there is a market for foriegn Amatuer RL shown on a one camera setup on Foxtel?

Look at Melbourne, we put a team there trying to build it from the top down and the work is starting 30 years later.. we shouldn't do that in PNG , we should build up the pathways first! Get them producing first graders first!
Don't you think PERTH red?
Melbourne = afl heartland
Png = rugby league heartland

png would be more like putting the broncos in the nrl

pathways are already there it’s about improving them
