It's parish. The wests blokes are putting their old boys club together. They had a lash for their stalwart Steve ghosn with Laurie friar as assistant but they're waiting for the weatherman to provide guidance and the masters apprentices bassist to come down off an LSD trip

It would be ironic as Matt Parish played for the Tigers in the 80's and Don Parish was a Magpies great. I would be shocked if the new board, NRL with the balance of power went for anything but the obvious choice. We cant have another NRL rookie coach after this mess.

Well then Taylor will get the job,he played for Wests,Parish played for Balmain and is a coach with a really crap record,we need to stay the hell away from him and his problems.

The club was a shambles when he arrived. Terrible on the field and even worse off it. He was also dealt a cruel hand when it comes to injuries since his arrival (which i daresay can be related to issues off the field considering how common this is).

At the start of this year when you guys were playing with most of your squad (there were still injuries) you looked pretty damn good. If anything if you weren't so unlucky with injuries i think a top 8 spot was looking pretty likely.

It has been great really seeing so much young talent being unearthed in the last year or 2 as well.

It's damn near impossible to judge his coaching skills without knowing what happens behind the scenes. I can't say if he's a good coach or not but i can say pretty confidently that he has been harshly done by.

Even if the next coach is much better if the same injuries happen next year and the off field BS is the same NO ONE could turn this ship around.

Mullet man Parish is a shoe in, the drama of the past two months was all part of the plan to oust Potter and it has worked a treat.

The big question, who has our CEO told the board to give the other job to???maybe another Manly connection

Another day, another story. At least Roy Masters has more integrity than P Kent.

"While there are clear day-to-day line-manager roles in our new structure, everything stops at me": Tigers chief executive Grant Mayer.

If governance is the special skill set of Wests Tigers' recently appointed trio of independent directors, they have already failed with the process to appoint their coach.

The board will choose the coach, yet the chief executive, Grant Mayer, will decide who fills the newly created role of general manager – football, a powerful position with a $13 million budget.

The coach will answer to the general manager, who will be responsible for all matters rugby league, from the junior representatives, under 20s, State Cup teams, recruitment, retention to the salary cap.

The coach's sole responsibility is the NRL team.

In other words, the CEO chooses the Mr Football, who oversees the coach, who is selected by the board, which appoints the CEO.

It is very circular and open to the blurring of lines of authority and resultant miscommunication which plagued the club when Mick Potter was coach and Wests and Balmain each had five directors on the board.

Asked whether it is unusual to establish a hierarchical structure where the coach is answerable to the general manager who, in turn, reports to the CEO, yet the board reserves the right to appoint the man on the bottom, Mayer said, "Yes, it is unusual. But if you look at our constitution, it's the way it was set up. The coach is a very high-profile position. It is a very visible role."

But Wests Tigers board, which lacks hands-on rugby league experience, has got it right creating a tiered structure and separating the football and non-football operations, while Mayer runs the front office.

The two NRL clubs who have made the most impact this year are Penrith, which has Ivan Cleary report to Phil Gould, and the Cowboys, where Paul Green answers to Peter Parr.

Both clubs have chief executives who devote themselves to non-football matters.

Mayer says, "It is the AFL model. I spent three years with the Giants where the coach reports to the 'GM Football'. As CEO of Wests Tigers, I am responsible for commercial activities, communication, stakeholder relationships plus overseeing the entire operation."

The Storm point out it was the model adopted by the subsequently disgraced Brian Waldron, who had formerly been CEO of AFL club, St Kilda.

As Storm CEO, Waldon appointed Frank Ponissi as general manager of football with the expectation Craig Bellamy would report to him but, as Ponissi says, Bellamy had already taken the club to two grand finals.

It quickly became apparent that a partnership of equals was the preferred working relationship and it continues in Melbourne where CEO Mark Evans runs the front office.

But at most NRL clubs, either the coach or the CEO is dominant, and the football manager takes a subservient, operational role.

Any club with Des Hasler as coach would impinge on the roles of CEO and general manager, while long-term CEOs, such as the Dragons Peter Doust and the Rabbitohs Shane Richardson, are perceived to be the power figures.

Parramatta has adopted the Panthers/Cowboys model, for the pragmatic reason that if the coach walks, as Ricky Stuart did last year, the structure is still there for an immediate replacement.

However, if coach Brad Arthur becomes a control freak, it could set him in collision with football chief Daniel Anderson.

Wests Tigers have therefore made another smart decision by deciding the general manager of football will be installed before the board selects the coach.

Mayer says the former appointment will be announced at the grand-final lunch and the coach chosen in late October.

The Wests Tigers board would presumably identify a coach who would be willing to report to the football boss, suggesting the club's next clipboard carrier will be a rookie.

Some see Mayer's front-office responsibilities as a back-to-the-future role for him, considering he was once CEO of Manly where Hasler took control of all contracts, salary cap and recruiting, while Mayer ran the non-football operations.

Mayer said, "It's a bigger business here. Manly was a $9 million operation. Wests Tigers turn over $18 million. While there are clear day-to-day line-manager roles in our new structure, everything stops at me."

Wests, which supplies two directors to the board, will also appoint a general manager – football operations responsible for the Magpies' junior and senior teams, and the appointee will work with the Wests Tigers general manager.

Assuming Wests Tigers chair Marina Go and her board make the right choice on NRL coach, it is all systems go, a green light for the club as it begins its inevitable journeys to Campbelltown.

I think the club sounds like it is heading in the right direction. I think Potter should have been retained but Mayer sounds like he knows what he is doing.

I
wasn't talking about fans, I was talking about certain players who may want their mate to coach them. Ex team mates as coach may be fun but we know what that leads to.
Don't forget that he also coached the young guys coming up to grand final success.
Yes that's a plus in some isntances but leads to good old boys club culture all over again.

Todd should be booted entirely and not considered an option at all.
I'm just afraid player power might win.
Interesting that you say 'certain players who may want their mate to coach.
Didn't player power push for Brad Arthur over Taylor at Parra?
Didn't player power see Henry punted from the Cowboys?

Is it any different to a coach lobbying players? As reported in the DT today
MATT Parish has been lobbying behind-the-scenes with several influential NRL players at Wests Tigers with a view to landing the top job at Concord. Parish enjoys support in high places, with ex-Tigers coach and broadcast radio icon Alan Jones a close ally.

As for the comment regarding a coach coaching the young guys coming through but what it leads to, What about a coach who has had success for a number of years at a clubs e.g. Bennett and Bellemy maybe Payten won't fall into the trap of the old boys club, who knows? I'd say a very larger percentage of journalists wouldn't be able to comment on him in regards to that just like the people commenting on the forum.

Parish would be a disgraceful choice. I don't think any of the options are good ones, but he would be by far the worst.

Not only is Parish a shit option, he's close mates with the most despised man in Balmain's last few decades, Alan Jones.

Keep the f**k away from him.

Any little shitstorm will blow up even bigger that f**king Parrott spreading it over his program and eventually linking it to how Balmain ran when he was there, which will just cause more shit.

You'd also have Hadley hating on him and the club.

It makes sense not to hire the hopeless git.

SO I dare say we've locked him already.

I started out as a fan of Mayer, now I just despise the prick.

Interesting that we turnover twice the $$$ that Manly do.

Also thought it was nice for Masters to get through a whole article without any sly digs re: Wests, but he managed to sneak one in at the death.

Nothing personal against Roy, and with all due respect, but that article to me sounded like he had absolutely nothing to write about at all, so that what he decided to write.

The article provides next to no insight into anything, or any news, or any staunch opinion one way or another.

It's just a waste of time.

So Parish has support from some players and been lobbying them.
Now that's funny because he would only come into contact with Farah or Woods through the Origin squad.

I hope this is just a rumor and he isn't our prospective coach.

I also wonder how long it will take for the new independent board to work out that Mayer was part of the problem in the first place and give him his due reward, the boot!

That pretty much sums up everything Masters has written over the past 20 years.

But remember Farah wants nothing to do with coaching appointments.......

And being a man of honour and integrity......he wouldnt surely lobby for Parish.

Mayer sounds like he has it together. I read an article at work from the other paper which comes up with lies and he sounded good in that article as well. I'm pretty sure he said in that article that he had been friends with Potter for 10 or so years.

I just hope whoever gets the coaching role gets a couple of years to see how they go.
