Not easy to get an accurate read on PVL and I think I know why. He comes across as a weird mix of :
  • Corporate but uncouth
  • Forthright yet bookmaker-esque dodgy
  • Assertively bold and yet unconvincing at times

Haha, good observations. I think you are right about these.
But to me the real suspicion is still "why do the media run by Fox and Nine love him so much"? They installed him then straight away renegotiate contracts. That's a worry.
I am starting to lean towards liking him a lot. I love his willingness to make rule changes. The only thing that could turn me against him now is if we find out that Fox honours their contract with AFL and thus screws NRL again.

In some ways he reminds me of Trump, who also has a large following of the utmost faithful fans.

His success seems to come from displaying relatively simple messages (and repeating them often), a direct and aggressive style, and giving the impression that he will carry through with his actions (unlike the others before him). At the same time, he is unpolished on his responses.

They say to never waste a crisis to force change and he's definitely not wasting this one.

We wait for a more suitable media giant to come along and give the NRL the billions everyone thinks all media companies are craving to pay for the right to broadcast little 'ol Rugba League.

Essentially played in 2 states in a country down under where the grass roots of the game have been slowly dying and over run by AFL.

Yes it isn't the biggest sport in the world, but it definitely has alot going for it with the right partners who will help it grow. Look at history Rugby League was top dog by the mid 90's it had great marketing, the game was in good shape on the field and it had a partner (Channel 10) who nurtured it and pushed it forward. In the mid 80's RL was televised on a Monday morning at 2am in Melbourne by 1990 it was live on a Sunday afternoon and proved very popular.

Don't forget it also had Origin and International football which was huge also.

It is no coincidence that Murdoch came hunting for it to push his Pay TV network.

We know what has happened in the last 20-25 years which stunted the game and it's growth and pushed it back 20 years, which allowed AFL to grow and become number one.

However the AFL has nowhere to grow and has reached high up on it's ladder of potential growth, whereas RL is just starting to climb again, there is a heap of potential. We can dominate the Pacific, PNG, NZ, half of Australia and have a reasonable presence in the other half.

What was telling in the SMH article above was Murdoch and his NFL dealings in the US, remember they use sport to drive their networks. Not only that they recently purchased HBO. There is a definite strategy here to link the two.

From history whatever happens in the US generally happens in Australia.

V'landys was recently in the US, he gets advice from Lachlan Murdoch, the NRL have extended their partnership with Fox. No doubt the NRL digital arm will fall under Fox and they will use it to drive subscriptions along with HBO.

If this helps league to become top dog then all good, if not, well..........

Would be handy for all stakeholders (including us) to know what is going to be in future contracts.

The refs have a rep. The players have a rep. What about us fans having a representative who is judiciously kept informed about the contractual status and its terms and who signs a confidentiality agreement to only divulge to the rest of us pleb fans once contracts exchange.

Pipe dream I know.

Here's an article about Murdoch and the NFL

https://hbr.org/2019/04/rupert-murdoch-the-nfl-and-the-negotiation-that-remade-tv

This part was telling:

Two Simple Truths About Negotiating
While I’ve offered these lessons in the context of Rupert Murdoch, Fox, CBS, and the NFL, two abiding truths resonate with the experiences of other formidable negotiators with whom I’ve worked, studied, and/or written about.

First, this story reinforces the potentially fatal costs of failing to deeply probe the interests of the other parties — and of not seriously taking these interests into account in your approach. Further, without identifying the true barriers to a deal and customizing your approach to overcome them, your odds of success are low. This warning especially applies when one side overconfidently dismisses the competition and emphasizes tactics and the short term while the other side is a strategic negotiator, carefully reading his or her counterparts, focusing on new players and changed circumstances, and playing the long game.
(this could apply to the NRL strategy under Greenberg, Grant, and Smith)

And finally, an abiding second truth: While Murdoch’s success depended on his impressive negotiating strategy and tactics, his approach succeeded only given his deep, almost unique understanding and conviction about the long-term value of professional football in building up Fox as a network. Virtuoso tactics in service of a flawed understanding of the value at stake cannot succeed

Some negotiators “zoom out” to the strategic and the long term as a guide to their approach — but may be less adept at face-to-face dealings. Others may “zoom in” to the people on the other side with remarkable interpersonal skills — but may lack a big-picture focus.(V'landys) The story of Murdoch’s pivotal NFL deal highlights how top-flight negotiators iterate between both perspectives, zooming out to the strategy and zooming into their counterparts. In my teaching and advisory work, I’ve seen this approach consistently make major differences in negotiations.

Many years ago I suggested on here we should form a Rugby Leagues Fans Association to give us a louder voice.

But they’ll never have internationals. Once the season is over, it’s over. Fox know they can get more mileage out of Rugby League. And Origin didn’t work out for AFL.

And trying to get AFL up and running in NZ ended up a disaster. But little is mentioned of the fact.
They have had 120 years plus to grow the game outside this country, yet they are still girt by sea.And may it continue for the sake of humanity.

I don't particularly care what a Chairman or CEO looks like or whether he lacks charisma. He could look like Ben Ikin and talk like Paul Kent, just get the job done and dusted.Whether he is fawned on by media or not,I care not, just be a doer.

As long as what they say will happen, happens and more so when the organisation is in deep financial crap in a time of national emergency, when the code looks like dying the death of a thousand penalties.

A starting date is in place, when a swag of critics including the fumbling brigade bagged the proposal, the game has at least income security(yes obbviously reduced) for the next few years and clubs that were at death's door have been given mouth to mouth, players have agreed to wage cuts and the refs are now onside. Hopefully fingers crossed wrestling will be reduced ,we'll see.
Oh and if Peter FitzSimons thinks the decisions are a sign of arrogance, coming from one of the most arrogant nimrods placed in our midst, then it sure as hell made my day.

The AFL has struck further problems with Sth Australia which could delay their start(already after ours), they are expecting a big lashes on their Tv deals,Union is still trying to figure out a program for the year and sweating on getting a broadcaster who will offer peanuts off the floor. The A League players have been told to take an 80% cut and are going ballistic, they are also struggling re TV.

I ask myself as of end of May 2020 A.D. what position would I prefer to be in, selecting from the above.
Answer ................. fill in the blankety blanks.

Exactly, they have their premiership and finals that's it.

This is why they make such a big deal of all the stupid medals they have, because unlike alot of other sports that have representative teams they have nothing. So they pump up all these pseudo honours like club best and fairest etc.

lol, afl will start 2-3 weeks after nrl but won’t have:
Sacked the ceo at the behest of tv companies
Won’t have a despot chairman pushing through his ideas at a whim and Changing the game in the process (jury out for better or worse)
Won’t have had a major stoush with the refs and publicly slagged them off
Won’t have been dragged through the shtter in public by their fta media partner

but hey we will have kicked of a couple of weeks earlier, all hail Vlandys.

The 2 weeks later may well be delayed, they are having trouble with Sth Australia. Anycase they have been indecisive along the way. All over the shop.
From what I understand also NRL clubs ,where they had questions posed and the CEO never got back to them.Accounts and even you(lol) complained about them, were either vague or put under generalised headings, such that scrutinising was made harder.
Their AFL chairman has been well noticed by his absence ,and criticised for it at times.
When times like this(and you still find it difficult to understand the effect of this sh*t) are around you obviously prefer a soft chairman ,so we'd get well and truly rogered, and you'd still complain.
Major stoush was with the 2nd tier refs, and it was resolved quickly by V'Landys and he still got the one ref for the end of the year ,and admitted if it works good ,if not he'll take the expected arrows.
Last line, what a load of tosh, the code has been dragged through the crap by both electronic and print media ,for decades during SL ,immediately after, and even before PVL landed on the scene.Try ABC, ch10,7 and 9,Current Affair.
The irony and again you shoot yourself in the foot, you even whined about ch9 for years undermining its contracted code.

AFL kicking off ? No.
AFL settled yet on a reduced TV deal yet? no
AFL resolved where all teams are being located ? Not exactly.
AFL solved situation with no umpires available in SA ? No
AFL CEO or Chairman solved anything yet? No
Now talk of a big reduction in playing numbers for each AFL club, not settled.Suns in particular .
AFL have any overseas teams to include in organising the new arrangements? No
AFL have the balls to set up a committee to look into end May start or bumble along? No
The longer the AFL is off the screen, the more money they lose and they go further into summer. But,but the AFL are the white knights.

Colour me surprised you are still singing the AFL anthem, even some AFL people are giving the NRL a thumbs up for their efforts.
If the NRL had been a fortnight behind ,you'd whinge they were amateurs, that's what you are programmed to do.

Have to agree besides the start date and a media licking his boots, he's handled everything else poorly

Vlandys giggling at the AFL about their suggested solutions lol.

A few weeks on our own without any competition AFL would dream of.
