What the whiners fail to grasp is
We didn't have much other choice than to go for a new deal .
If we went to court to fight it out with 9 & maybe fox to see who was in the right contract wise .then the NRl would have died ...the costs would be crippling with no income coming in .
Can Those who bitch please tell me how The NRl would have survived .
There would be no playing this year.
All funds in reserve would be eaten up
Then after you explain that .
Please explain where the mythical media $$ are going to come from if not Fox & 9.
7 no chance
10 no chance
So where?

VLad did what he had to & yes he might have had to make some concessions ..as happens in negotiations .
But this was an unprecented event .

Re read my posts, I've said it numerous times, 3 years yes, why longer,

That can actually used as a positive to locking in a longer contract period as it guarantees funding moving into what is a transitional period for the media landscape and allows time to plan how to best handle the new horizon that is fast approaching.

No because this deal is has taken out competition, you know what competition does don't you?

I repeat ad nauseam,I have little time for the Murdochs ,but one thing they do ,is pay their Tv contracts .
That gives some degree of income certainty for a set number of years.
I remember ch10 not that long ago, who couldn't pay the bills and ch9 got rugby league.
The FTA TV mob are living on borrowed time, and they know it, with their axing of staff.

That's right mate, the media landscape is changing and EVERYONE knows it. So if you own a pay TV network what do you do, lock in your top sports for a long period. If you have a sport that is in high demand and drives subscriptions what would you do.......lock it away for 7 years or fulfil your current deal and see what the market has to offer in 3 years ie competition.

Farkin lol.

I can't wait till Big Pete takes a f**kin chainsaw to the NRL Head office Nev Power style, starting with the 70 staff in the 'digital arm'.

What a joke that is.

Would RL really be starting if we had that bearded Twat Grant or Barcelona Beattie still running the show???

I seriously doubt it, lol @ Perth Dreadshit whinging about Greenburg being turfed, he whinged about him for years. Hilarious.

yes and has you said the traditional model is in decline, who says there is competition there in 3 years, who says there is a market in 3 years?

And who said there isn't.

I'll take a punt and say there will be a desire within people to watch top line sport which creates a demand equals a market etc etc etc

What's the bet Rupert did the same and locked the NRL in for 7 years for millions of dollars. Great deal for Fox.

But you don't actually know anything, hey ch9 already wanted out of this deal. With the reduction in FTA viability in this country over the past few years, the money we are being offered now might not be there in 3 years.

I may not know alot, however I know one thing, never believe what the media say particularly when they have agendas to eliminate competition from something they need or want. If we did, we'd think Peter V'landys was the messiah .

As I have said a few times before, read up on what is happening in US sports rights and that is what will happen here.

You said yourself the current media landscape is changing, I'd have thought having a guaranteed income during this time would be of benefit?

News ltd has spent the last 7 years, and more, taking every opportunity to put sht on the game and it’s leaders at every opportunity. The fact that during this period there has been numerous opportunities to do so and they haven’t should Have everyone feeling a healthy scepticism as to why. Couple that with the love fest over Vlandys and you can’t help but feel Suspect.
They’ve got a very long extension on a deal that still had two seasons of significant payments for less, possibly a lot less, and may have sabotaged the only serious investment the nrl has made over this period in its digital capacity. They may have not but we won’t know until the deal comes out. As they say the prof of the pudding and all that.

You do know that those 70 staff make the NRL $12mill a year in profit don’t you? So you’d sack them all and lose money? Business genius lol.

Must be nice to live in such ignorance that my opinion is the key driver to your understanding what’s going on lol
And for the fcking umpteenth time I had no love for Greenberg but fcked if I’m going to celebrate the nrl leadership once again being determined-by tv partners and to suggest he should be sacked for financial mismanagement when he’s delivered two years of very good financial performance is BS and I’ll call it such.

im not, that’s your perception. I’m speculating with a caveat that we don’t yet know the details. Same as people who are saying it’s good we have an extension are speculating without knowing what the deal actually is. It might be a great deal, it might not. I have my concerns due to Vlandys and the way news ltd are being very abnormal in their behaviour to him and the game at the moment.

Mate I agree that the Digital is crucial but you don't need to complain about it 10 times a day when we know nothing about what as happened.

But in the USA the FTA networks are desperate for live sport. Its the only thing they know will rate. The only nfl game that is exclusively pay tv is Monday night On ESPN . And that will change ASAP because that game if it stays with Disney will be on ABC.

They are looking at their options of course including streaming services but the FTA networks there are prepared to pay. https://www.latimes.com/entertainme...hts-deal-for-the-nfl-will-be-bigger-than-ever

Its a little different here with the tv market split in half NRL/AFL. But both still attract decent audiences for good games in whatever time slot. So one of the FTA networks will pay for that.

Pay tv is changing shape. If you have Netflix, Stan, KAYO, Amazon and Disney+ is it any less cost than Foxtel. So it’s just a change of platform rather than a complete rework of the model. The Foxtel box has become you’re phone/tablet/computer. Which if you are at home you cast to your tv/chromecast/apple tv/roku/whatever and watch it on a big screen and instead of recording shows you can stream them at any time (as long as they haven’t been removed).

foxsports May just become KAYO. Pay your $25/ month. Sport for you.

who knows.

but FTA will fight to keep sport. Only live events are rating consistently.
