I said it somewhere in this forum a few weeks ago. It was odd V'landys was still hanging onto his racing gig.

He won't stick around.

$2.3 bil over 7 years? Which is probably 6.5 years

When it used to be $2 bil over 5 years

We have $1 bil left over 2.5 years

So that's a deal of $1.3 over 4 year extension

RL will go back by 50% in TV revenue

Looks like a poor deal

As someone said on another page, how good/bad it is should be determined relative to AFL. The sports media landscape has changed too much for us to compare too much to previous years (which will be considered a golden era).

Speaking of AFL, is there no threat from CH7 or Fox to renegotiate the AFL's rights?

It is rumoured they are also looking for an extension at a marginally lower rate.
Our drop is around the $32mill a year mark if rumours are to be believed.

at the moment, the AFL schedule 6 matches a season on thursday night, and no matches at 6pm on friday.

they don't have 9 stand alone time slots either. friday night (and thursday night when its scheduled) are generally the only stand alone time slots they have. every other time slot overlaps or they have 2 games on concurrently in the same slot.

they have 6 extra premiership games over the year. but they have no SOO.

so, going by the above, the AFL haven't compromised their schedule so much for the broadcasters than the NRL have, yet bring in more for it. if they had more exclusivity, they'd get even more than the current overs they get on the NRL. they've got more room to move to up their rights. the NRL can do it through expansion, but that means starting or giving a license to 2 new teams. and given the basket case GC are, and the cry-poor of some sydney clubs, can rugby league sustain two more teams?

TDLR - money doesn't compare apples with apples. the control the NRL give up to get its money is far greater than the AFL

An AFL game also goes for longer and has more quick stoppages for ad breaks than League.

The worst thing about the NRL compromising it's schedule for TV is that its a only short term hit for ratings. If they had more crowd friendly timeslots then I reckon over time ratings and interest would increase across all games. This is beyond the NRL and dumb organisations like Foxtel and 9 though...

Vlandy's is now the only leader of the game who I have heard admit that "the wrestle is the biggest blight on the game". Most of them wont even use the word wrestle and leave it to the coaches to ruin the game. (can anyone remember a leader mentioning wrestling?)

His motives to get rid of kicking for touch on ruck penalties is to speed things up, this gets rid of wrestling. He actually said that last night and explained the logic for a rule change. That is another thing I have not really ever heard a CEO or board member do.

I don't necessarily agree this is the best way to get rid of the big W but I am looking forward to seeing how it goes. I am starting to really like this guy.

of course you do, because he talks like a fan. Got to support suburban clubs, tribalism, stop wasting the games money, wasting our time in afl states, get rid of the wrestle etc etc
If it’s good for a chairman of the nrl to be publicly sharing his thoughts and controlling all decisions remains to be seen. It’s the classic Trump approach that has become the new norm for popular leadership, just say what people want to hear regardless of consequence.

Something you still don't understand, tribalism. The GC doesn't have it.You lose a club, you lose their fans period. The nonsense that they will follow another club, has been shown up,by Bears' fans and when Souths were flicked their fans.
Suburban clubs are part of the game. The code has already lost some, either by the flick or mergers, and are our attendances any better for it ?

Vlad at least has some idea of what the fans feel, unlike some CEOs that never played the game.

If Vlad is trying to be popular ,his rip it in style is hardly the way to go.Unless of course you like the passive Gallop style, where getting ridden over roughshod by others is the norm.

Trump is a d*ckhead no doubt, but he has in fact before the COVID-19 got far more black Americans back into work than any prior president.

He could be Santa Claus and you'd complain he's too fat for the job or the presents were wrapped in brown paper..

neither does storm but they are one of the best attended clubs in the league. How’s tribalism working when 9 clubs within a stones throw of each other can’t crack 15k crowds? Where’s the tribalism there then?

his rip it in style as you put it is exactly what populist tactics are, like building a wall to keep out them dirty Mexicans. So far his rip it in style has cost us circa $75 million In tv money (allegedly), and the support of the WA govt.

just knew you’d be a Trump apologist lol.

Sit back and grab the popcorn!
He’s going to slash and burn but won’t hit the clubs up. First call has been to get rid of cfo and hand the financial running of the org over to a staff member who already had a full time job over seeing the salary cap compliance of clubs. Wonder how that will turn out?
Next get rid of a ref, that’ll save $2.5mill. Already clubs are blowing up saying they don’t like it. The poor ref on his own better be up to it or he is going to to get canned by the commentators.

That's clearly how they are going to spin selling off the digital arm, "reducing operating costs".

The Storm won grand finals , and in their second year for a start .If they had been an also run club like the Titans, you honestly believe they'd have the crowds they do ,despite a new stadium. And we were told they would average 20,000.This in a city of nearly 5million.

Tribalism happens over many years ,and the Sydney clubs within a stones throw have a choice between going to a Parra stadium or suburban stadiums or watching on FTA .Storm fans don't have FTA as a choice.Give them better local stadiums and their crowds will be better than their current ones.

Well you have a choice where someone gets stuck in on negotiations, and getting the game started on 28th May ,or you have someone who sits back and expects things to happen.
Your AFL boot licking code, is still stuffing around with no firm date set. They are losing money hand over foot also.

And who under present health and economic issues would do better
negotiating the deal. It's also not just Vlad, it's Abdo also which you were unaware ,which figures. You'll probably come up with Smith LOL.
Any one with half a brain knows TV deals were going to be less, unless of course you live in a cave in WA..As long as he's fighting for the code, and not just one club aka Perth, then he's ahead of the pack.
Perth probably is going to be a costly exercise anyway, with sponsors tightening their belts, airfares going up almost certainly.

He's protecting the code from getting into a Union type financial situation.Your attitude and you care not about the other NRL clubs except the Storm and your personal Perth push, is what would stuff the code .

Your last line comment, is as stupid and dumb ,as me suggesting you support Chinese expansionism in the Sth China sea, because you keep pushing the Perth expansion barrrow.

What I stated about Trump is factually correct about black employment nothing more, everything else he's involved in has been an embarrassing disaster. You are carrying on like Rothfield clueless.

I'm an apologist for the code surviving in this country, you're an apologist for your own personal agenda, and pile on the negative crap thinking that will solve the issues LOL.

manly and roosters have had as much success a Storm and a lot longer to build a fanbase. With tribalism such an important thing they must be well ahead of the storm right? Oh yeh that’s right they’re not. tribalism is nice fuzzy warm thing that gives you an excuse to justify an over saturated situation the game has.

rubbish, storm fans can watch the Ch9 game live on fta just as any fan in any part of te country can these days.

Well looks like we will never know now doesn’t it. Would ch10 have gone hard for rights pushing nine up, would Vlandys trip to USA delivered anything? As it is we are rumoured to have accepted a guaranteed $64million plus less money over next three years and we wont know if the 23-26 deal is better or worse than it might have been.

Let’s seen when the deal is finalised if Vlandys is the man, or yet another dud that’s sold the game short.
