It's pretty obvious when refs are aware of this bias and try to combat it, too.

The new-cas-tle chant should be left to occur organically and naturally. It loses meaning and intensity when it's trotted out too often. It's a big-game, big-moment chant for mine.

I agree with this.

However, it cant be understated that the other chants dont "work" because the "real fans" arent interested in participating.

I'm shocked that people don't want to have a trumpet being blown in their faces

Hows the view from up there on your pedestal?

When I was an active member all care was taken to ensure Stu was located within the bulk of the standing crew at the back. We went out of our way to make sure that he didnt 'blow in their faces'. In fact, he angled the trumpet towards the roof of the Western stand to ensure that was the case.

What pedestal am I on? The one that conceded defeat to the fans that tried to have us ejected from every game because we were loud, had big banners and a trumpet?

If that is the case, there are plenty of us up here.

What the current Crusade get up to I have no idea, but I can tell you I dont miss the days of constant abuse I received just because I wanted to enjoy an interactive game day experience with other like-minded people.

I am assuming you read this whole thread, not just the last 2 posts I made on the subject.

Nice straw man.

our game day experience and involvement is pathetic. Our club apparently are happy with this.

Unfortunately most of the fans are content with it also. At least that is the realisation I came to after many years of involvement before, during and after my time with the Crusade.

Times have changed. The demographic of rugby league has changed too. Gone are the days of the footy yobbos getting shitfaced on the hill. Clubs and the NRL are very family focused now. What may seem pathetic to you I'm sure would be a very enjoyable experience for others.

The crusade would have been better had they stayed on the hill, where they're surrounded by different people every game. Moving to the stands means you're surrounded by season ticket holders who are subjected to the trumpet and drum every single game...can you blame them for complaining? They paid their money to see the game, not listen to you. I remember at least one game where a big red and blue banner was run down the whole bay...I'm sure that probably wasnt the most popular thing the crusade ever did

Joking right? It was very popular. The year we had the band we were getting somewhere. Everyone knew who we were and what we did. Those around us chose to be there and loved it. It needed a push from the club to be something special. Instead we were treated with first mistrust, then contempt, then simply ignored. Now we will be back to nothing at the games.

And you are right, demographics are changing. They are getting older. And one day soon a lot of them will be too old to go out and golf clap in the cold of the night. And they aren't being replaced, because the fun isn't there.

Sounds like a sound strategy.

And another thing, the crusade was never drunken yobs. Maybe that was the problem, the groups that seem to thrive are indeed that.

Well I find the football and atmosphere boring at present...I'm an old man but and whilst I'm not getting cold I'm being bored to death. I returned to live in Newcastle in 1997 and have held season ticket/s since then but I think this years my last.

I don't know what the answer is but for me I don't feel like the crowd is into the game in recent years.

I go to every home game and have done so for the last few years. I've got awesome seats around halfway and not many rows back so I'm right in the action. I really wear my heart on my sleeve and I truly live and die with the Knights. When we lose, my whole week is sh#t and more than one of my family members are still wearing their Knights jumper and they are no longer with us.

Every home game I try to get the crowd pumped, I try to get the chant going, I try it all but the crowd just doesn't get pumped like they did when I was a kid. I can hardly talk at the end of each game and I remember when most of the crowd was the same years ago. I believe there are a couple of main reasons why we have gone so quiet.

The first is alcohol. Now, before I go any further, I do not drink at all so this doesn't apply to everyone but most people get more vocal after a few brews BUT now they serve low strength beer etc and couple that with the ridiculous prices of the crap and that equals quieter people.

Second. Fear of prosecution for offending someone or being kicked out of the ground. Years ago when you went to the footy, you expected to hear plenty of the obscene, almost violent language that naturally comes with the high emotion of a dedicated supporter. It was expected and accepted. Now with how sensitive and overeactive the world is becoming, it's frowned upon. You should see the looks you get from mum of the century when you scream "get em onside ya fu#kin pink shirted grubs!". It doesn't worry little johnny you do gooder b#tch, he's lovin it! Even worse is when security threatens you like your a trouble maker and tries to throw you out of the ground!

Conclusion?. Just like the game itself, society has gone a little bit soft but I'll keep trying to fire us up. I can't help myself!

The new admin have made it abundantly clear they want a golf crowd. It isnt that they dont help, it is that they deliberately obstruct what we have been trying to do for the past 8 years. We were finally getting somewhere and when Tinkler took over everything evaporated overnight. I would be surprised if there even is a crusade next year.

Really? i never heard any of this. what happened with Tinks?

Seems like there are some people who pay their money to watch the football, and others who pay their money to watch the crowd, and then complain about the crowd

You dont think the crowd atmosphere has any effect on the football?

So if Origin was played in ANZ with no fans allowed in the stands, it would still be as exciting.

I wonder if we'll be wearing our Close the Gap jerseys. We always play well in them for some reason.
Will be the home strip mate.

Without turning this into a Jets vs Knights discussion, Jets crowds are noticeably younger than Knights crowds and the atmosphere at their games (where they only avge about 12-13k mind you) is better than Knights games on more than the odd occasion.

Bingo. Players feed off crowds.
