Media Release

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have extended the contract of New Zealand international Bryson Goodwin for the 2016 and 2017 seasons today, as well as confirming the signing of outside back Michael Oldfield for the 2016 season, who will return home from the Super League at the end of this season.

Goodwin, 29, has extended his tenure at the Rabbitohs having joined the Club in 2013, going on to play 63 games in the red and green over three seasons.

Goodwin has played a total of 140 NRL games to date, as well as playing ten Test matches for New Zealand. Goodwin has recently been selected in the Kiwis train-on squad for their end-of-season tour to England.

Oldfield, 24, will join the Rabbitohs following a two-year stint with the Catalans Dragons, which was preceded by 25 NRL matches with the Sea Eagles and Roosters. Oldfield will add further pressure for spots on the end of the South Sydney backline in 2016. Oldfield was recently named in the Tonga squad for their Test match against the Cook Islands.

Head Coach Michael Maguire is pleased to see Goodwin commit to the Club for an extended period, and to have Oldfield joining the squad.

“Bryson has been one of our most consistent players over the past twelve months and he has given his all to any job we have put in front on him,” Coach Maguire said.

“We have a young backline so his experience at NRL and international level is very valuable to us.

“Michael will also add experience to our backline and will create more competition for spots which is always a good thing at a football club.

“I’m looking forward to working them both in 2016.”

Goodwin said he is happy to have his future sorted out.

“I love playing for this Club and alongside my team mates, so I’m really happy to have extended my time at Souths,” Goodwin said.

“We have enjoyed some success in recent seasons but we need to keep putting in and improving our game, and all of that starts again when we get back together for pre-season training.

“I feel that my game has improved working with ‘Madge’ and the coaching staff here at Souths, and I’m looking forward to getting as much out of the next pre-season as I can.”

Where would they fit him in?
When maguire comes back to prop next year it'll push thaiday back to second row.
That means they'll have to fit in Parker, glenn, thaiday, gilette, teo and possibly Oates into 3 positions

The Broncos bench possibly could be improved--

Dodds is leaving & the other 3 could spend more time in the Qld Cup as they are all very young;ie Nikorima,Ofahengaue & Wallace.

I got the official members e-mail. You would have got it too.

I'm now waiting on an official members e-mail confirming Cook and hopefully Auva'a too.

The word is that there were two players, one is a done deal (I think Cook) and the other was not yet a done deal.

We must keep Auva'a. I won't be happy if we lose him.

If Auva'a stays, for the other wing spot I reckon Madge will go with Goodwin to begin with.

Once again it would be great if Southsport or Shadow can find out anything from people in the know!

Cook mustn't be officially signed yet either.

Expect the announcement of Auva'a and Turner's signings this week.

I was just about to say that port haha good old pride forum dishing out the rumours.

I think if we re-sign Somi and Turner and get Sam back we're set for a dominant year. Let's hope Madge lets us offload this time round!

Zero tackle says Turner has re-signed until end of 2017. They're not always right though so I'm awaiting official confirmation in a members email.

If we can't get Sam then let's go after Taupau or Te'o.

R95 Grevo must start in the back row and be given good game time and given a license to offload. Grevo has great potential. If Madge starts Grevo off the bench a lot I will pull my hair out!!!!!!!!!!!

Some word around that S. Burgess could be going back to Super League. I hope the talk is wrong!!!

BOOKMAKERS Sky Bet have closed the book on England rugby union?s Sam Burgess making a shock return to Super League with Leeds Rhinos.

They had seen some significant interest in the market about the former Bradford Bulls player leaving Bath for Headingley.

Burgess, 27, has polarised opinion in union circles since being parachuted into Stuart Lancaster?s ill-fated World Cup campaign less than 12 months after switching codes from South Sydney.

There had been strong speculation he would return to Australia with Souths after the World Cup which ended for the hosts in embarrassing style as they were dumped out in the pool stages following Saturday?s loss to the Wallabies.

However, there has been a surge of bets on the Dewsbury-born superstar returning to Yorkshire with treble-chasing Leeds.

Sky Bet spokesman Jordan Fiddes said: ?We received a number of requests on our Twitter account for Sam Burgess to sign for Leeds Rhinos shortly before and after England lost to Australia.

?We went up originally at 8/1, then went down to 6/1 after a series of bets came in.

?We?ve since taken the market down in case some people know something we don?t!?

Salford owner Dr Marwan Koukash has also repeatedly stated that he wants to use the new Super League marquee player rule to bring Sam back to rugby league in 2017.
