Greg Inglis injured: Rabbitohs superstar racing clock to be fit for NRL finals
GREG Inglis will be racing the clock to be fit for South Sydney’s likely elimination final after one of the country’s leading sports doctors said the superstar fullback could require at least three weeks to recover from knee surgery.
Inglis had a fragment of loose cartilage removed from his right knee on Monday, with the club’s high-performance manager Troy Thomson hopeful their skipper and No. 1 will be fit to return for Friday week’s clash against the Sydney Roosters.
“It’s a fairly simple procedure,” Thomson said.
“They go in, get the loose piece of cartilage out, and then we’ve got 10 days to get him up for the Roosters.
“Generally speaking, Greg is a good healer, and we’ll have him firing for that round-26 clash.’’
But leading Melbourne-based medico Peter Larkins cast doubt over that prognosis, telling The Daily Telegraph that the average recovery time for such a knee surgery was longer.

He also warned an early return could lead to further problems for Inglis, who has been flat chat the past 18 months.
The 28-year-old has played 57 games since the start of 2014, including 43 NRL matches, six Origins, six Tests, a World Club Challenge decider against St Helens and the Indigenous All Stars clash.
His heavy workload might explain why his running metres have dipped from 154m last year to 125m this year, and his tackle busts dropped from 112 to 74.
The Bunnies desperately need Inglis, especially if they lose to the Broncos on Thursday night and are forced to try and win back-to-back titles from outside the top four.
The Daily Telegraph can also reveal Dylan Walker — not Alex Johnston — could be the preferred fullback option after he finished last Friday’s Canterbury game at the back, then spent time training in the position on a wet and miserable afternoon at Redfern Oval on Monday.
Larkins, one of the finest sports doctors in Australia, said a good result for Inglis was “two to three matches out’’.
“If it’s only a small piece of (cartilage), it would still be quick for Friday week, and that would be ahead of average,’’ Larkins said.
“It is possible if it’s been a relatively straightforward operation.
“You take out the floating piece, but the bit that is left behind has to seal over because it’s got a fresh edge on it. It’s a bit like a slice of bread, when you slice it open, you’ll have that fresh edge where you cut it.
“It seals over in a couple of weeks. But if you jump on it or jam it, you can split it open again, and you need another arthroscope later on. That’s always a risk if you go back on it too soon.’’
Scans cleared Inglis of any injury on Saturday morning, but he felt discomfort in the knee during a weights session on Sunday.
He went for a second scan on Monday, and was booked in for the surgery hours later.
Souths will feature in the finals, but it will be towards the bottom of the draw should they lose to Brisbane and then the Roosters.
Johnston said he’d prepare ‘’wherever ‘Madge’ (coach Michael Maguire) wants to put me’’.
Halfback Adam Reynolds said the team would experiment with a few fullback options, including Johnston and Walker.
