Todays snippets from the press.
Scott Fulton signed from Manly - currently ‘recruitment guru’ according to buzz.

Nofa started singing the Storm victory song last night.

No mention whether Api and Paps started singing their previous clubs song as well?

I wonder if that means Tim's guy is gone (again)?

Sheens’ tale of the tape

Wests Tigers coach Tim Sheens walked into the team meeting room at their hotel in Bathurst on the day of the game with a simple instruction for his players.

It had been raining non-stop from the moment the Tigers arrived in Bathurst and the veteran coach didn’t want his team coughing up possession cheaply against the two-time defending champions.

He asked his players to wear strapping tape around their wrists to help provide extra grip to control the soap-like ball in the torrential rain. It’s why most of the Tigers players were wearing tape around their wrists.

David Klemmer took the advice on board, although it almost backfired in the dying minutes when the ball got attached to the adhesive on the tape.

Klemmer placed the ball on the ground for a play-the-ball but as he lifted his hand, the ball got stuck to the tape and forced an error.

It presented the Panthers with an opportunity to win the game with two minutes to go, although the Tigers held their nerve to hold out Nathan Cleary and co.

A completion rate of 90 per cent (38/42 sets) would delight coaches in the driest of conditions, but to do so in the driving rain against the best defensive team in the competition was a remarkable effort.

While the Tigers were winless coming into the game, you could see signs of improvement over the past few weeks. Their forwards have been exceptional.

The Tigers have run for a combined 1216 metres more than their past three opponents. Against Parramatta on Easter Monday they managed to amass 1963 metres compared to the Eels’ 1491 but lost the game after Maika Sivo crossed late to give his side a 28-22 win.
The Tigers celebrate a win which has been brewing for a while.

It was a similar situation in their next game against Manly at Campbelltown last Sunday. The Tigers ran for 498 more metres than the Sea Eagles, but conceded a late try to surrender the lead and lose their seventh-straight game.

Against the Panthers in Bathurst they completely outmuscled the reigning champions, running 246 metres more than their opponents. This time halfback Luke Brooks managed to play off the back of it, kicking his team to one of the more memorable wins of recent years.

Anzac jersey not behind Tigers staffer’s sacking

Still on the Tigers, and it was reported during the week that the club had parted ways with their head of merchandise following the ANZAC jersey debacle.
The Wests Tigers’ original Anzac jersey design featured a stock image of American soldiers.

However, the club did not terminate him because of the jersey bungle but rather because he had been discussing club matters on a Facebook account under a different name.

The club confirmed his sacking was unrelated to the fallout over the jersey design. Club bosses were tipped off about the Facebook account and decided he was in breach of the Tigers’ social media policy.

The former employee should not be held responsible for the jersey fiasco. That falls on the shoulders of CEO Justin Pascoe.

Credit where it's due, the tape idea, was a good one. May he have many more.

Just watching the Ch 9 Monday night show...good fkn lord Gallen has an absolute inability and unwillingness to acknowledge anything positive about WT...all he could say about the win was how easily Penrith could have won it if they had got the ball over the line those couple of times and how the recruitment of Scott Fulton won't guarantee any players wiil come as they can go wherever they want....he can be such a bitter deadshit

Eye of the Tiger: Wakeham opens up on Sloan gouge
By Christian Nicolussi
May 4, 2023 — 7.45pm

Brandon Wakeham has spoken for the first time about the four-week ban he received for eye-gouging Tyrell Sloan, the St George Illawarra Dragons fullback he will try to stop – legally – at Magic Round.

Wakeham sparked headlines last June when he was caught raking the eyes of Sloan during a NSW Cup game broadcast on live TV.

A NSW Rugby League official took photos of Sloan’s eye after full-time before Wakeham, then playing for the Bulldogs, was referred straight to the judiciary.

He pleaded guilty to contrary conduct, with commentators describing the incident as a “grub act” and “cheap shot”.

Sunday’s clash between the Wests Tigers and Dragons will be the first time Wakeham has played against Sloan since the incident, but told this masthead there was no lingering tension between the pair.

“There was a bit of emotion, it was the heat of the battle and things happen,” Wakeham said.

“I had forgotten about it, so thanks for bringing it up. It was nothing personal. I’m not one to carry grudges or let things [carry on].

“I got a bit carried away, to be honest. It was a game that was televised, so it got a lot of media coverage. I spoke with Tyrell after that game and we were sweet.”

Wakeham had the utmost respect for the young No.1, whose form has been a bright spot in an otherwise frustrating year for the Red V.

“Everyone sees he can create plays out of nothing with his speed,” Wakeham said about Sloan. “We need to keep the ball out of his hands as much as we can. Having said that, they have a strong back five, so we need to work as a team and hopefully we can nullify them.”

While the eye-gouging incident was largely forgotten by most fans, it was a different story when it came to Wakeham’s run-in with Manly’s Josh Aloiai in the sheds at Campbelltown Stadium, and the verbal battle with Sea Eagles debutant Samuela Fainu that preceded it just a couple of weeks ago.

There were suggestions Fainu had spat at Wakeham, but he refused to make an official complaint. When pushed on the matter on Thursday, Wakeham did not want to comment.

He did, however, make it clear there were no lingering issues with him and the Fainu family, including brother Sione who plays with Wakeham at the Tigers.

“There was a bit of emotion during the game, and I smiled at him [Samuela] after we scored a try, and there was a bit of friendly push and shove,” Wakeham said.

“I’m good with the family, and I’ve known them for a while. I’m sweet with him. The family and I are all good. I won’t comment [on the spitting]. There was nothing in it.”

Aloiai said at the start of the week he would have stood up for Fainu again if faced with the same situation.

Wakeham knows it was foolish to take on a front-rower and quipped: “He [Aloiai] is out of my weight division. I’ll stay away from him.”

Wests Tigers eye Johnson deal

The Tigers have reached out to Shaun Johnson’s management to gauge the halfback’s interest in joining the club next season.

The Tigers have held internal discussions about luring Johnson back across the ditch in 2024, identifying the Warriors No.7 as a potential replacement for the under-siege Luke Brooks.

Brooks is in the final year of his lucrative deal with the Tigers and the club has shown no appetite to extend his tenure at the club.

Johnson is also in the last year of his deal with the Warriors, enjoying his best season in recent memory over the first nine rounds of the competition.

Johnson has a long-standing relationship with Tigers assistant coach Benji Marshall, who will take over as head coach in 2025, from their time together in the New Zealand national team.

A source with knowledge of the situation talking under the condition of anonymity due to the confidential nature of discussions said the Tigers are willing to pay up to $700,000 for Johnson’s services.

They are currently paying Brooks just short of $1.1m for the final season of his back-ended deal at the club.

Stefano wants to be captain. He’d make a good captain ..watch this space

If he's serious about this then good on him. He needs to get his form up a bit, then become a serious talker on the field. When we see him starting to fire the boys up then we will know he's on his way

I think “firing up the boys” is overrated. I’ve seen a lot of players trying this including Luch when he was here …and many others but still no captaincy material..
I can’t see a lot wrong with stefano’s form. Sometimes just leading from the front and the players being afraid to mess up is enough. Some of the best captains talk when needed but have lieutenants to delegate to for the yelling and screaming.
I think I’d listen to what he says
Leaders are leaders

Oh shit!!!.. At least here’s some entertainment
Karmas a bitch. Let him grovel to Lee to give him legal advice. I hope the NRL stand him down as well?

Just an odd bit in the article, "choking a person without consent", who would give consent to something like that?

Interesting, just looked through the fox new and sport and nothing mentioned about it? Maybe they thought it wasn't news worthy?

Drop kick, if true.

Hope they put him on a corner in the city selling papers for a living.
Incredible
It’s in a way sad seeing careers cut short like this and Michael slater and Andrew Okeefe. And from such great heights.. I would think we don’t see Kent again, ever. It’s over now for him. Wow just like that. 20 years ago no, but today yes. Let’s say he’s even slightly guilty. That would be unforgivable in his trade.

He’s been a bully on the radio as well. One of his co hosts left his job as Kent refused to apologise after pushing too far personally..
These old school genuine nasty pricks are being weeded out coz they are just too big and successful to think they need to change. You wonder how they can be so dumb.

Someone said to me once “if things are looking pretty good” which I’d just told her overall for me, they kind of were, “don’t forget in one moment you can lose it all”. That could include a bad car accident while texting or anything stupid.
These guys forgot that and let their guard down, one time too many

Touch wood
