Why does it have to be a utility back? Arthur isn't a utility anything.
It doesn't, but it does need to be a back. The utilities here are Drown, the halfback who plays more like a centre, and Blake, the centre who plays more like a winger. Injuries suck but if we get one (like yesterday) those merkins are capable of shifting if there is no utility on the bench.

Who am I throwing under the bus? I already said Dylan Brown is a better player than Arthur. If I was picking the side next week it would be:

2. Blake
4. Opacic
6. Drown
17. Arthur

Jake Arthur is there for injury cover, just like he was yesterday. His dad didn't injure Sean Russell ffs
Lol you picking apart his game last night and telling us what Jakey Arthur does better. Hope you have let the coaching staff about his faults so he has something to work on.

So Jakey is not just the perfect back up half he’s now the perfect utility??? And as if Bea would injure a Rouse Hills Rhino FFS!!

I never got the Blake to wing argument either. The guy is a decent centre (bar some tackling/defence issues) but he’s probably only 75% of a winger. Good for emergency like yesterday but if it’s where he’s being selected, we’ve got problems (like 3 injured wingers)
What don't you like about him as a winger? Weak hit ups? Slow? Not good enough in the air?

Rein was great in the 2s and exactly why he should be 14. Something different at Fake could really spark our A. They could be an outstanding combination. Reins D is pretty damn good as well.
Jrthur might wear 7 in reserves but he isnt and never was. He always played second fiddle to JR. JR was again the main guy yesterday and Williams played 2nd fiddle. JA needs learn how to be a 7 b4 hes handed the keys to the castle. I really hope his potential is realised but I have concerns how hes being handled currently.
If he never ran the team in reserves then he's ideal to come into first grade and not run the team.

At the ground it was quite obvious that the Tits fancied themselves going wide with their speed. We were lucky to have Dylan and Penisini out wide to shut down their raids. Did you notice that and do you think that Matterson could have handled it ? Campbell was slippery AF and merkins like Kelly and the two wingers were hard to handle.

last year we were concerned about Marata in the centres. Yet he done quite well there

You seem to be tad fixated about Arthur. Who would have been a better 17th man ?

BTW Marata was on the sideline yesterday with crutches, so unsure if he will be back next week.

do you understand he’s not ready? Whether he’s a half or utility, he’s not first grade standard. Regardless of who his dad is or how hard he trained in the offseason. Surely it’s not that hard.

Yeah and they only got 20 mins each. Here we go again. Its a 17 man game ffs particulary when your game plan is to smash it up the middle.
Use your best players as much as you can, especially in a close game. Bellamy played two of his middles for 60+ minutes.

Junior Paulo only made 11 runs. Matterson made 10 and Kaufusi 12. The only one who made more than 12 was RCG, who made 16 runs, and he was hardly overworked. He only made 16 tackles ffs. Their workload was fine. Top tackler was Lane with 31.

How am I fixated? You asked a question and I answered it. He’s not a utility. Can only cover in the halves I believe.

@TheRam I'd love to hear your review of the game.

Bar Lane and RCG we had no great performers. What worries me Ram is we are building a sinking ship. I feel like come end of 2023 it may need a full rebuild and we might be bottom 4 again. Unsure why I am getting this feeling and hope I am wrong but its the feeling I get.

I think sides may work out our style and our troops will get old faster then we want upfront. Gee I hope I am wrong but rarely am Ram.
But I feel like Saints and Dogs are closer to a premiership then we are.

Well most of our players were very good in attack in the first half. But once Russell came off in my opinion JA helped our team lose its way. I don't want to be to critical on a young kid but he is not ready for the NRL just yet and he showed me that again yesterday.

Why do I say this? Well it is his speed. No not how fast he can run but the speed that he does his play making at. It is way to slow and allows the defenders plenty of time to adjust or react. Watch the time he takes to do his thing vs Mosses or even Gutho who are deciding, moving, passing or kicking at speed. This is what gets the defensive structures to react and sometimes makes them react poorly or you sometimes don't even give them time to react due to the speed you are attacking them with. JA telegraphs it home.

So once he came on we were using him as a main organiser distributer and everything slowed down which meant that all those little opportunities and small openings that were available to our attacking weapons like Mahoney, Moses, Brown, Penisini, Lane and Gutho dried up. We started to play without the purpose of the first half. You could literally feel the loss of confidence in the structures that we were playing with just a few minutes earlier. We weren't hunting in numbers and throwing multiple players with footwork at them.

We started to shift sideways to much without the same direct venom and forward momentum that we were doing and the link passing was not being done with players that are hitting the line at speed together, but before the line therefore the defense could make the right decision. All little things but major when looked at as a whole.

Now what happened to D. Brown? This is a major reason as to why we couldn't score another try all second half. He in my opinion was on fire in the first half. I was particularly watching him for the obvious reasons. And he was delivering. he was doing what I have been calling for all along and running onto the ball at pace and then digging deep into the line before passing. In fact all our players were of the same mindset and that is why we had the success we did with the ball in the first half. We as a team did everything with speed and many bodies in motion all pushing up.

But like I said, once we added AJ to the mix, we lost that and started to play disjointed and indecisive or making the wrong decision. Brown in the centres was Brown unsighted. He was literally missing in action. We lost a player that was creating opportunities for the players around him and substituted in a player that told the opposition his game plan before he executed it. Sure I know other players made mistakes and he didn't, but that isn't the point. AJ threw our attack out of sync. Again I hate singling out a young kid that is still learning his craft, but that is the point. He has at least 2 or 3 more years of learning and picking up his tempo before he is really ready for the NRL. I think he should only be used in our NRL team if we are desperate.

Anyway, as for our defense, well it was pretty ordinary as most would also agree. But I am not all that surprised. Whenever we have previously focused and worked on our offensive structures we have lost our way defensively. and yes I know that we apparently have also focussed on our defense all off season to, but Defense as we all know is a mental thing and if the players came out focussed on attack then defense will suffer. Now eventually we one day might be able to play the dynamic and expansive game and defend like demons too. But sadly that has eluded us so far under BA.

As for Simonson, he is a worry. Decent finisher in space, but the more I see of him the less I like him.

For mine the positives and standouts to come out of the game were RCG, Lane, Brown, Penisini and Blake, when we were on.

Special mention for RCG. What a player and right up there as one of the best already establish players Parra have brought to the club. As we all know, we have a tendency to buy lemons when bringing in established star players. But like I said in an earlier post and also why you are worried for our medium to long term future he and Paulo will be old on a couple of years and it will not be easy to replace those sorts of players for like.

This why I have been meaning to post something on this for a couple of weeks now. So in my next post I will make a suggestion of what we need to be aspiring and attempting to do.

Matterson to centre, Blake to wing. Stone / Maka / Kaufusi play extra minutes in the middle. No disruption to our halves.
Instead there's a massive disruption to our edge defence because we have a lumbering forward defending at centre.

I can't. He does things so slowly like when corey Pearson thought he was our halfback

He really needs to work on sprinting as i can't see him taking the line on and do it well

Eventually, the opposition will work him out

He scored a great try last year from a chip and chase; I don't think pace is his issue.

He needs to get used to playing against men - but I don't believe he's ready for First Grade yet.

Well you are acting fixated because you are yet to propose an alternative to JA on 17th jumper. I thought that Dyaln to centres stopped a heap of points after Russell went off. You think that a forward would have been equal or better than Dylan ?

Yeah it was nowhere near as bad as Dylan’s, but it was at least at worth a look by the Bunker.

It definitely was an accident, but some kind of punishment should of been handed down. Just like a tackle where contact with the head is made but it wasn’t high, because the attacking player was falling. Penalty all day.

either 10 in the bin or 8 point try.
