I think we put Sef at lock to play the 3rd play maker role, no doubting that but one of the main jobs of a decent back rower is to defend and if he cant do that he would better suit playing 5/8 like he did several times last year.

If he cant defend he shouldn't be in the pack and I dont think thats where his future will be which ever club he ends up with.

He can't play 5/8 though - he can't kick or make the right decisions on the set plays.
That's why he just plays the forwards through the middle, or is given licence to use his footwork if the opportunity is there.

I'm sure it's not a question of 'is he a good enough defender' - coach knows he isn't, however he picks him for experience (a young bloke will normally defend just as badly as a bad defensive veteran); and for the attack he brings.

Maybe in the next bye week we could start turning the position over to someone else? Let Gower take the role then? Pauli will have had enough experience by then not to be silent on the fringes.

I think the fact we have continually had 1 or 2 of our better forwards injured or suspended has helped that.

As we have seen a number of times this year he has started off the bench

Coming off the bench doesn't make him any less a part if the team. Who is more important, the starter who plays 40 minutes or the bloke who plays 60 off the bench?

I think Paulo keeps his spot apart from being a part of our attacking structure, he provides cover for hooker.

It's paulo's defence which let's him down.

I reckon the reason he hasn't re-signed yet is because Arthur is waiting on an answer from Jamie Buher before deciding on paulo's future

If he provides good cover at hooker, Fui should be named every week to cover for fullback

Unless your name is dean widders, the starters are obviously much more important. You need to get away to a good start, if your team is losing 18-0 after 20mins that bloke playing for 60 off the bench is useless.

Yep definitely aren't the ideal back up hooker, but it obviously Arthur doesn't want a specialist hooker on the bench. Thus Paulo is really the only other option we have who can play back row and hooker.

i hope sef doesn't get offered more than 150K, horrible game from him. i liked the news earlier in the year about buher, he would be a far superior version of sef.
melbourne didnt have line speed, they were off side alot. there were a couple of times that they had to slow up as they were getting to the first receiver before the ball did.
i was actually enjoying footy this year with less wrestle and slow down tactics and then of course we go to melbourne where they manipulate the ref. i swear the ref was having a cigarette after the game due to the amount of reach arounds he was getting off the storm

Do you really think any player is worth three tries in 20 minutes? And what makes the first twenty more important than any other quarter of the game?

As for starters being more important, give me a break. Some players are better suited to coming on once the game has opened up. Others offer no special attacking skill so it doesn't matter whether they start or not. Back when teams played with two dummy halves the better attacker would usually start on the bench.

In that case, i would rather Sandow or Norman go to Hooker and the other plays as the main half, with help from Hayne.

Probably for the best, Joely01.

That would completely change our shape. Plus who would defend in the middle?

Umm , after Sunday, defending in the middle is not one of Sef's fortes, at the moment he is getting found out in defence and after a pretty good start to the year, has started to crab across field again

yeh I tend to agree with that, he is neither the lock or 5/8 that will take any team to a top 4 spot which is where we should be aiming next season

And it's not pure fantasy Twizz.

If they keep improving on the consistency this year, and get a taste of finals footy, not unrealistic to think we could be top 4 next season.

Yep. It was blatant. Yet we only had one off side penalty all game. Their forwards were almost shaking hands with our back line before the ball had cleared the dummy half.

Obviously wasn't ideal, but it worked out better then Paulo being the hooker

Didn't Paulo play hooker when Kelly went off the field????
That was my impression.

And having Kelly on the bench on the off chance DeGois gets injured seems redundant to me?

I thought Hinchcliffe was great yesterday.

He'd be the sort of 13 Arthur would want I reckon.

I'm not sure about Buhrer but Paulo is just too rocks and diamonds.

Having said he had improved a lot this year but he isn't the long term 13 for us.

I'd keep him though because he does offer a pretty unique skill set and play him off the bench.
