If you've got more than 17 first graders plus fringe first graders (as we do) then some of them won't play unless there's some unavailable. That doesn't make them backups. Backups are blokes who only play when there's injuries.

Basically, fringe first graders are somewhere between a backup and a legit first grader. Players who should expect at least a dozen games in a season. Proper backups will be lucky to get ten.

Further on this, and my claim that Kaufusi is a genuine first grader while Makatoa, Stone and Opacic are fringe first graders (as is Simonsson, imo), I also see Cartwright as a genuine first grader. He played 19 games last year including both finals matches, and has considerable talent and NRL experience. For this reason it's alarming that he hasn't played NRL this year. It means that not only has Jake Arthur been picked ahead of him but so have inferior forwards Makatoa and Stone. This all needs to be considered in light of him being picked in the 17 and then dropped at the last minute. Fixation on the coach and his son will make you miss this question. What's going on with Bryce Cartwright?

I'd lean towards form and fitness, and it's a new season so maybe some new ideas and approaches. Then there's the whole Mrs BA giving the stink eye thing. But yeah, Cartwright has form so something other than that is a real possibility. But I doubt he gets named in the team if it was some serious ongoing thing. Small sample size.

Yes I thought some of that was puzzling too. But at this stage I wouldn't want to call it.

Cartwright isn't in side could be for many reasons. I'd lean towards a drop Moffitt at training in comparison to the previous season.

Not really fussed with the loss.

Defence will probably take a month to sort itself out. I have not seen anything too concerning...

Can clearly see the team is being asked to play it safe and get through their sets (reflected in our completion rate). We took minimal risk in attack which was reflected in the score.

Losses are always disappointing no matter what part of the season they are.

Sharks were extremely motivated for this game from kick off till final whistle - how they celebrated at the end confirmed that. Good on them. I feel our ceiling is far greater then theres...

Broke his jaw at training last year missed the first 3 weeks due to it.

Nothing to do with mental health or covid.

Having a crack? Suggesting someone with a history of mental health issues has had a recurrence isn't insulting them. It's no different to speculating on a physical injury or a disease. These are things that happen to people. They aren't value judgements anywhere except in the minds of f**kwits.

Without reading back through 40 pages, has anyone raised how bloody long the grass was? I noticed it instantly on the coverage that it was a heavy track, and I couldn’t help but think it was intentional after they would have seen our expansive play and speed in the first half vs Titans.

Then in the post game it was confirmed when Hynes said the groundskeeper kept the grass long to upset the opposition team, but he thought it was too long himself
