Rd23: Parra v Bulldogs GAME DAY THREAD @ Commbank 20/8/22

While I’m really happy with the victory that was an incredibly frustrating game to watch. I think we left a lot of points on the table by turning over possession with dumb errors. How many times did we let the Bulldogs regather off the short kickoff? Also has Mahoney ever dived on a loose ball without knocking it on in his life? He’s so uncoordinated and it’s infuriating. We were lucky the Bulldogs were trash today because there’s no way the possession should have been 51/49 with our superiority. It was great to see Cartwright and Niukore make solid contributions. We’re going to need that come finals time. Also I will forgive letting go of Papali’i if we can retain Moses and Drown. Absolute superstars.

Maybe just enjoy a win and worry about the other stuff later, mate? Do you lot ever have a good enjoyable weekend. Have a f**ked Monday instead. You won't have to worry about Mahoney for much longer.

It's good to see the the spine getting quality touches all through the game. Too many times we have halfs of footy where the spine goes to sleep and it's just one out stuff offering nothing.

Huge game for us next week. If we did beat Brisbane and Roosters beat the Storm which is highly possible then we'd take on the Storm at home for a top 4 spot. If we lost to Brisbane we would be most likely have to beat the Storm to finish 6th and a home final. And if lost we'd be looking at 7th or 8th.
Some real crackers next week.

Souths vs Cowboys. Cowboys win means stay in 2nd spot and a home final. Souths loss means a possible game vs Rooster just to stay in the 8.

Roosters vs Storm - Same situation as above almost. Huge game.

Parra vs Brisbane - This is also a big game for both parties. Brisbane more so. A loss and they would need to beat Dragons away from home.

The following week also big games for Souths,Roosters,Eels,Storm,Brisbane.

Penrith get to cruise into the finals.

Sharks play easy teams

Cowboys will get the Panthers in the last rnd who will rest a bunch.

4th spot and a crack at Penrith is ideal. Even is lost it means a Sydney game the following week and if you did land the Storm playing them here rather then there is massive.

Exciting few rounds coming up

^^^^ from the Dogs presser, our wide shifting tired their pack out.

As much as Reed has been copping it on here of late, his ability to throw a 20m pass to the chest ^^^^ created the numbers for the Opacic try.
I think the biggest thing about Reed's game yesterday was that he actually moved with the ball in hand. Up until this game I was unsure whether or not he could manage the multi-tasking required of holding a ball and moving his legs at the same time. It was the most varied performance I've seen from him all season and one of the most effective. He engaged defenders before passing which meant our forwards weren't just getting lined up and smashed. It also gave our halve's more room.

It wasn't a perfect team performance but it was the most intent they've played with for ages and maybe the most free flowing football they've played all season. There was some poor execution early on but I'd rather see them move the ball with intent and fail instead of running one out and hoping for the best. Basically, playing to win rather than playing not to lose.

The $64 question is how we can turn up one week and not the next. It’s not like we are intimidated by the top teams. It’s not like we think that we just have to go through the motions to beat the lower teams.

I feel I should go back and watch the Souths game again. Did they have a game plan to nullify what we do good ? Or did we just freeze and shit our pants ?

I think it was a bit of both; Souths knew how to shut down our pet plays, but we also kept pushing plays that weren't working.

We’re allowed to have opinions mate. You might prefer to ignore the negatives in our game during an emphatic victory but I prefer to look at things we can improve upon as well. The finals are literally around the corner. If that doesn’t interest you then I would suggest you ignore those talking points.

When we play Souths it's all mental now.

The players spoke all week about how souths give us a bath everytime and wanted to rectify it.

The more we talked about it i believe the more we talked ourselves into another flogging. As they were as timid as I have seen all season from the opening whistle in that game.

I've never really believed that a team has the wood against another. But souths ....

There is a couple out there we aren't at the Melbourne v Brisbane level yet with souths.

Melbourne have a superior record against Brisbane it's almost ridiculous i think they said the other broncos have won just 2 from last 24 games against the storm.

And Brisbane hasn't beaten Storm at Suncorp since 2009 that's 13 years straight losing at Home to an opponent. And the average losing margin is 24 points.

Good win. Best for me was signs of improvement in defence. Yes I know the Dogs didn't throw much at us but we slid better. Waqa with one very poor miss and some really dumb mistakes meant that there is room for improvement next week.

As above, best game from Marata all year. Also hope we work on defending short drop outs. Dogs seemed to escort with no issues yet we let them get into position to catch the ball cleanly every time.
What we really suck on is defending against decoys on the right edge.

Its the decoys who suck in or hold up or defense away from the sideline

Tbh, I don't know why we can't copy south's left edge attack, we have the players

We just don't run the decoys enough. We do sometimes though. Is it coz we're knackered chasing the collision

Yeah, I thought it was good how he engaged the markers

But then maybe the gameplan from BA was to always fire the ball quickly out of the ruck in previous games
