What was also pleasing to see was our shape in attack - we had decoy runners, we weren't getting into our own way, second phase play was played up tempo...we were very slick.

I am very, very impressed.

That, and our defence was brutal - we were hitting hard all game.
Yeah, we did things at speed even the shifts.

Maybe we need to be drug tested

Sivo as well

That improved us with sivo being out.

Unless he is 10m out from the tryline he is worthless.

Dunster must have been told to bend his back more and not stay upright when taking the ball back as his carries were a lot better last night and digged into the defensive line better.

I remember the penrith game where he just got rag dolled wasnt the case last night.

It's a pretty common tactic nowadays to bomb the more dangerous winger, with the plan being to smash them on taking the ball. Then they aren't available for the next play, and the line gets a better opportunity to set.

It's worth noting he didn't make it through the game, so that's a win for that tactic. He didn't pose much of a threat sitting on the bench iced up.
Agree. If you can kick to the most damaging attacking player and then surround him in defense and bottle him up, it takes him out of the game to a large extent. It's a good tactic.

Just thinking about those crappy assistant coaches that we re-signed. How come we defend so badly so often when the boys have this in them?
We have a team of very talented players whose natural abilities are confined by the coaches' tactics and game-plans. It took a few floggings and some merciless criticism in the media to get them to allow a bit of creativity. Arthur even went to the mind-boggling extreme of actually giving Cartwright some reasonable game-time last night. Wow. After watching what these players can actually do when the training wheels are removed, I want this muppet coaching staff gone mere than ever. Can you imagine what Shane Flannagan could do with a side as talented as ours?

By the same token, though - we were missing Mahoney, Campbell-Gillard, and Matterson.

We were arguably more under-strength than they were.
FFS. I was responding to a post that claimed Melbourne were ‘full strength’. They clearly weren’t. They had 3 out.

Ffs.

I know that.

I was just adding that we were under-strength, as well.

It wasn't an attack on you. Calm the f**k down.

one of the biggest things that jumped out at me in last nights game was how we were killing them in the ruck in much of that second half

melbourne rarely struggle to get to marker - their holding down is second to none .... we were regularly leaving them sprawled on the ground unable to get to marker ..... I don't know if it was us (good) or them (shit) - maybe a bit of both

Yeah, I thought from the get go we were winning the ruck in both attack and D, and because of that they ended up laying down in the back half of the second half to buy time.

It just showed more in the second half because losing the ruck all game f**king tires a team out and it becomes more obvious the longer the game goes on.

That's why we found space around them, they had to compress to try and contain us through the middle. That and Moses long kicking game turning them around time and again.

If we can repeat that effort on effort in the finals, we are a genuine chance, our ball players just looked so much better when our forwards won them space and time.

Round 24 charges: Bromwich, Paulo among eight facing bans https://www.nrl.com/news/2021/08/27/round-24-judiciary-charges/

Storm forward Jesse Bromwich and Eels prop Junior Paulo are among four players facing suspension following a review of Saturday's matches.

Both players will miss just one week with early guilty pleas and be free to play in the first week of the finals.

Bromwich was charged with a grade on crusher tackle while Paulo attracted the same grading for a shoulder charge.

The review of Saturday's matches also resulted in four players facing fines.

Storm pair Harry Grant (dangerous contact) and Brandon Smith (high tackle - careless), Sharks centre Jesse Ramien (dangerous contact) and Eels lock Nathan Brown (high tackle) fall into that category.
