Redcliffe put their hand up

An hour min to get to the game, so you think that’s ok in Brisbane but not ok for say Penrith playing out of western Sydney stadium or manly out of allianz?

Well an hour is the furthest station, which is right in Redcliffe.

Many ‘North Brisbane’ Dolphins fans would live 30-40 min by train.

Comparing it to moving a Sydney team to a different stadium isn’t the same thing. You’re talking about having to change peoples habits, much harder thing to do. But if Penrith can’t get future upgrades to panthers stadium the team may well have to move to parramatta.

No you couldn’t, the nrl wants to grow the game, not see precious expansion spots taken up with suburban mentality small time clubs like it is saddled with in Sydney.

I don’t see it as any different than taking a few games to a regional centre.

You’d still be looking at 85% of the games at a very high quality stadium.

Isn't Wynnum-Manly in Moreton Bay? If so, how do you use Moreton without them?
Sure are. Redcliffe at the northern part, Wynnum-Manly in the central-southern part.

Yep, for one or two games it's fine and a great way to keep in touch with the local community that they're supposed to be representing, similar to the Bulldogs with "Back to Belmore".
I can see this being the future for a few clubs, namely my team, the Tigers, playing one game at Leichhardt, one at Campbelltown and the rest at either Parramatta or Homebush.

But why would anyone want to see the Tigers,we were told they would struggle in 2018.Shedding players like a chook moulting .
Oh wait the rl media stuffed up once again.

My concern is if it’s a QLD cup side it’ll limit the support.

Is that how its be viewed in Brisbane?

Yes! Redcliffe are a great club - but you either do one of two things with them:

1. They play out of Suncorp and alientate the fans and their roots - basically they are not Redcliffe anymore they are a bastardised Brisbane 2 with the Dolphin logo.

or

2. They play out of an expanded (20k) Dolphin Oval and keep their roots but become a suburban team with a ceiling to their growth - we have too much of that in the NRL already.

I must admit though, Redcliffe or Ipswich would be a great story for RL but I just don't see the next SEQ team as anything but a city rival to the Broncos playing out of Suncorp.

Thanks PR. On those numbers it's doable! It appears to be a growing region with plenty of nearby area populations as well. So perhaps the Brisbane Dolphins or the Redcliffe-More ton Bay Dolphins does have wings!? (or flippers).

Redcliffe is not Brisbane. While we are at it, let's do away with the Illawarra name in the merger and just call them the St George-Sydney Dragons because..... you know.... it's the same thing.

Think you would have to agree that the Illawarra is a region that is linked to the Sydney based club of St George? Thought that would be clear. Apparently not for some! ? And on the regional side of things the Central Coast region seems to be inextricably linked to a number of Sydney based clubs? So not sure what your gripe is there? It's reality! Three regions must be counted as relevant when discussing club numbers in this area.

yes St George Illawarra are linked as a club but Illawarra is not Sydney, just like Redcliffe is not Brisbane.

Redcliffe the club and the town aren't big enough to Isolate themselves for an NRL club, and the NRL would be stupid to let them in as is.

Best case scenario is going with the one off games model and playing 10 or more games at Suncorp. If existing clubs aren't willing to comprise on their suburb identity then they belong in the 2nd tier with a Brisbane Bombers type bid with a different name in the NRL.

Best case scenario if these smaller grounds are or can get up to scratch. (If not play all games at Suncorp)

Moreton Bay Dolphins - Train in Redcliffe or Northern Brisbane. 10 Games at Suncorp, 1 game Dolphin Oval, 1 game Sunshine Coast stadium.

Or

South-West Brisbane Jets - Train in Ipswich or Logan. 10 games at Suncorp, 1 game in Ipswich, 1 game in Toowoomba.

Dogs are taking games to Belmore now. That's a good model, one that can be used for Brisbane 2 and 3.

Good points! I said in a previous post that Ipswich and / or Redcliffe in the NRL would be a great story for RL. They are iconic clubs and probably the biggeset brands in the QRL. I could see Redcliffe working with a 20k Dolphin Oval and their marquee matches (Broncos, Cowboys, Titans, Warriors, Storm, Dragons, Eels) played at Suncorp. This should mean that they average around 15k at Dolphin with their big four or five matches each year getting anywhere between 30 and 40k at Suncorp. This would a) give them an average attendance of between 22 - 25k for the season but also not put as much of a cap on their growth. The marquee games each year allow them to sell a marquee game membership in a 52k stadium.

I wonder if this is a compromise that the Redcliffe fans are happy to make to have their side in the NRL? Possibly because travelling 40 mins to Suncorp four or five times a year for an event is probably appealing and any NRL fans that live in the area already do it to watch the Broncs anyway.

I can't see Ipswich playing out of Suncorp though. Redcliffe is a shire to the north of Brisbane. Ipswich is a different city and I don't think they would take to kindly to us stealing their Jets and branding them SEQ and playing them out of a stadium in the middle of Brisbane. Ipswich is probably the one area of SEQ that has a genuine State of Origin style ''dislike'' of Brisbane and they are very proud of the Jets. It would be too bitter a pill for them to swallow.

The catch 22 with these bids is that if they go it alone I don't think the NRL should accept them. There needs to be compromise on their brand and involving other areas is essential. If these bids can't give a bit on their brands and where they'll play then the NRL should be taking it in to their own hands or going with a bid like Bombers (just demand a rename).

Ipswich Jets is a strong 2nd tier brand but ideally they'd work with Logan, Western Brisbane and Toowoomba if they wanted their brand in the NRL. Likewise Redcliffe Dolphins is a strong 2nd tier brand but ideally they'd cover Redcliffe, Sunshine Coast & Northern Brisbane.

In time 20k+ boutique stadiums would be great, but getting government funding would be tough going and you'd hope either team would be aiming for 30k+ for their bigger games which would mean Suncorp.

I like the Northern Brisbane etc option. Playing out of Suncorp stadium is doable.
