Mergers have been one big disaster in RL

Beagles & St Merge were takeovers with power plays, bickering and one de merger and we are possibly headed for another

Even the Wests-Tigers if Balmain had half a chance they would demerge. Even Wests are struggling to keep Ashfield & Campbelltown as a joint entity

And 25y later the fan base still doesnt accept mergers
Two de-mergers.

It wasn't as messy as the Northern Eagles, but the Steelers sold all their shares in the St. George Illawarra Dragons years ago.

Balmain only hold token shares in the Wests Tigers as well, and they only still hold onto those because of intervention from the NRL and business community when that merger was starting to look like it was going to go through a messy breakup about a decade.

Though some of the older Balmain boys will vehemently disagree, it's not unreasonable to suggest that the Wests Tigers administration doesn't actually function as a merger in any meaningful sense of the word anymore, even though they still are one on paper... I've said it before, but it's only a matter of time before some Magpies old boys within the club start to push for the club to revert completely to the Magpies. Whether or not they're successful is a different question, and it may have already happened in fact, but I digress.

I could see that happening but also highly unlikely that the NRL let that happen for all thier branding changes... plus it seems moreso that the club itself prefer the tiger mascot, even if "those old boys" want a change... you know with the recent BS of the St.george Illawarra Dragons and the marketing survey speculation about the name change, im suprised the Wests Tigers didn't try one too
Personally think it should be West Sydney Tigers, just like Souffs are

You assume that if the 9 was cut to say 4 that the same amount of fans in Sydney would exist.

The reality for me is that if my team was to merge then I’d tap out of rugby league altogether. I’d bet my life that many others are the same as me. So yeah sure let’s try your plan and see how it pans out for the game in general.
He would love nothing more than to see that happen... basically an A-league format that places pins on maps, and wait till the game nose dives, as each team like townsville, gold coast, and auckland all struggle like they did, then just cull them...
Dumb arse lives in Logan, but pretends to know how the Sydney landscape is...

I agree we have too many sydney teams, but properly dispersed outward from the centre of it can be justified eventually, as the population in NSW grows... just as dragons seem to be basing themselves in the illawarra region morso, that can be a lightning rod to other clubs that not only can it work, it can spread out the clubs moreso away from sydney, parra are training in kellyville now, when before they trained on my street in north parra/oatlands, dogs could base themselves possibly more south west towards liverpool, since it looks like the tigers aren't moving from concord, someone take on gosford like manly etc.. to simply just punt, merge or relocate away from Sydney is just being lazy

Clubs have just traded the teat of pokie dens for the teat of nrl club grants now. Necessity is the mother of invention and now they are getting a massive grant increase the necessity to become better sports businesses remains distant.

what makes you say that? Tigers are only behind 3 other Sydney clubs for members despite being dire on the field for years and shoddy venues They play at.
Tiger fans dont go to Campbe
They only work if they're a take over or both give up their identity to form a new club with an independent party taking control of the football department.

Illawarra and St George were a poor fit. So were Sydney Wests and Balmain.

The only other option is to remove the weaker club from an over saturated area and have the one that survives rebrand to fill the void.

There's no getting around the fact Sydney only has a set number of rugby league fans and there's not enough of them to support nine teams. The fanbase isn't growing and has been in decline for decades. Continuing to stick with the current model is insane because it's an example of doing the same thing repetively and hoping for a different outcome.

Southern Sydney should just have one team. Wollongong shouldn't have anything but a few games from a team based in Southern Sydney and plays most of its games at the SFS.

The Sydney CBD should just have one team that's based full time at the SFS.

Tigers and Bulldogs shouldn't exist at all. Rabbitohs are covering that region quite well.

Manly serves no purpose.
Greater Sydney population co tinues to grow

Its about to get a second major airport

With huge increases in road and rail infrastructure

Fans turn up when quality matches are scheduled correctly

I would prefer to see Macarthur region align with Canterbury and of course Dragons better aligned with the Illawarra. With a Bears return covering North Shore / Central Coast

It is better to have regional v Sydney pools long term. 18 team comp 25 rounds would be ideal.

Negative media is what needs to be addressed

How is the NRL grant even comparable to the pokies?

The NRL negotiates the TV rights on behalf of league. In what world shouldn't the majority of that money flow down to the clubs?

The alternative is for each club to negotiate TV deals for only their games ala Spanish soccer until a few years ago. Is that what you're advocating?

I hate that the game is funded by casinos masquerading as 'community facilities' and to compare the NRL grant to gambling windfalls is asinine and disingenuous

RL attendances in Sydney have remained stagnate over the last 20 years, despite the city's population growth. It's proof that rugby league has no room to grow in Sydney.

I'm told regularly by the knuckle draggers on here there's zero chance of the game developing a following in Singapore because its population is from east and south Asia. Sydney's population growth is primarily from east and south Asia.

The statistics I compiled on page one of this thread prove Sydney cannot support nine clubs.

Money talks. Bullshit walks.

If there was a market for nine RL clubs in Sydney then the commercial sector would be throwing big money at them. The Broncos and Cowboys are more commercially viable than the Sydney clubs.

Is there a way we can value the worth of a club to rugby league in Australia since 1908 whether it be QRL, NSWRL, SL or NRL?

He's pointing out that the clubs would rather rely on a handout instead of trying to generate more revenue from football operations.

No.

A club in the QRL and NSWRL is not going to generate the same revenue that they would if they were in the NRL. North Sydney Bears illustrate this perfectly.

All we can do is look at how many potential fans each club could generate if they were in the NRL, then decide who stays and who goes.

Please explain how it is a handout?
Broadcast revenue is not generated evenly by all NRL clubs. Some clubs draw better ratings than others and are thus more valuable to the game and its broadcasters.

Is it fair on the larger clubs that generate the best ratings to receive no more money from the broadcast deal than the least watched clubs?

We just had the lowest rating grand final in history. It was contested by two Sydney teams. One of which was the team you follow.

So you're suggesting the NRL goes to the model La Liga abandoned half a decade ago?

What if the NRL goes to one club. They should get all the TV revenue. Shame they'd have no one to play

You are aware the NFL splits TV and merch revenue equally between all franchises? They also play games in England and Germany. Why would they do such a thing and give hand outs to weaker franchises?

Yes, let's talk about the NFL and compare it to the NRL.

The weakest NFL club probably generates more revenue and better ratings than the strongest NRL club.

The NFL isn't dumb enough to have more than half of its teams confined to one market.

The NFL doesn't play its final in the same city every year.

When I suggest the NRL expand into southeast Asia by taking games to Singapore I get laughed at -- look at all the dumb baby boomer knuckle draggers mocking my idea in this thread -- yet I am merely following the lead of the NFL London Series that's been held for 15 or so years.

You dumb merkin.

In 2019 pre covid per note 4a of the financials

Gaming: $64m
Catering and beverages: $31m
Functions and banquets: $6m

Total just over $100m.

The PPE being the the buildings, kitchens, dining rooms and pokies used to create the value add sold to the end consumer.

Or are you saying Panthers could just rent these and generate the same revenue?

Which would still be a wrong assumption since PPE under an operating lease is required by the lessee to be shown on the balance sheet as an asset in the financial statements.

Nailed it.

When the Conference Centre is running these figures will double or triple, The football club itself won't see that money but it adds to the wealth should they need it
